This agreement with three independently traced son-lines makes the motif useful evidence for the Glasgow-12 family. It is still not a named SNP branch: DYS712 mutates rapidly, and STRs can recur or revert.

Why “Alexander–William” can appear as 5 or 7: two distinctions are involved. B580327–B696189 (the reported William c.1655 root) is raw GDist 5 in both the GroupingApp export and SAPP's original-distance table, but SAPP raises that same pair to an adjusted GD 7 after inferring separate changes from ancestral DYS576=16 to 17 in B696189 and to 18 in B580327. Independently, B580327–959947 (the documented Robert-1749 → son William branch) has raw GD 7 in this matrix. SAPP's adjusted 7 is a topology-dependent convergence estimate; 959947's 7 concerns a different kit.

Method: the matrix reports a transparent allele-step sum from the public Glasgow Project Y-STR table and two administrator-supplied Y-111 rows; multi-copy values are paired in sorted order. It should not be assumed to reproduce every company's GD algorithm, because FTDNA applies special rules to some multi-copy markers. The new B580327 relational export independently reproduces every available B580327 value shown here as its GDist. Its RDist is a separate panel-normalized grouping score, not genetic distance or generations. For ancestral-state inference, the four closely related Glasgow-12 kits were collapsed to one reconstructed family branch so they could not outvote the three independent basal lines. Confirmed SNPs and audited descendancy override an STR-only grouping.

Block Tree reconciliation and private-variant notes

Block Tree reconciliation: the displayed averages fit the pairwise lists after recurrent, multiallelic and off-tree calls are excluded. The five basal FT20271 tips appear to contribute roughly 5, 1, 5, 1 and 4 countable private variants (mean 3.2, displayed as 3); the two FTE32242 tips contribute roughly 1 and 2 (displayed average 1). This independently supports the variant-direction analysis.

Private-variant result: none of the listed Big Y matches shares B580327's five exported private variants. The raw VCF adds a sixth lineage-specific call at 26534797 C→G (PASS, depth 25), but the Block Tree does not count it in the private average. The non-matching screen labels that position FT124483, whose named mutation is C→A; it is a multi-allelic site, not evidence that all other kits share a new FT124483 branch.

How to read this: FT25406 → FT20271 → FTE32242 is confirmed SNP order. FT6135 strengthens one pairing but remains off-tree. Shared STR states appear only in the separate evidence table because they do not create branches; parallel changes and back-mutations remain possible. TMRCA values are working estimates reproduced from the project timeline and may change as FTDNA adds samples.

STR-only phylogeny

What does the SAPP reconstruction add?

SAPP independently recovers two useful marker signatures and proposes a third testable cluster. Its dates and internal ordering remain hypotheses because this run supplied neither SNP nor genealogy constraints.

Evidence boundary. SAPP V4.27 constructed this tree from 11 STR haplotypes using genetic distance, shared off-modal signatures and inferred mutation paths. The input contained no /SNPDATA or /GENDATA. Confirmed Big Y order—FT25406 → FT20271 → FTE32242—and audited paternal pedigrees therefore override any conflicting STR-only branch or date.

What causes SAPP's adjusted GD 7 for B580327–B696189? The observed endpoints differ by one repeat at DYS576, but SAPP selects ancestral 16 and models two separate paths: 16→17 for B696189 and 16→18 for B580327. That marker therefore contributes three inferred path mutations instead of one observed endpoint step, raising total GD from 5 to 7. The same inferred parallelism raises comparisons involving 333002. This is a useful convergence model, not a directly observed mutation history.

TMRCA calibration warning: the group estimate around 1500 broadly overlaps the present FT25406 and FT20271 age ranges, but the known Glasgow-12 control shows that an uncalibrated STR date can be materially too recent. The c.1750 and c.1600 nodes are search windows, not birth dates or relationship proof. A stronger rerun would add the confirmed SNP states and a genealogy group for the independently documented Glasgow-12 descendants.

Each marker-only result was scored against four reconstructed anchors on the shared panel. This ranks research targets; it does not place any kit on an SNP branch.

GroupingApp and SAPP cross-check. All principal Glasgow kits fall in broad Group 3 / Related Subgroup 1. The GroupingApp recovers the known Robert-1749 cluster as Tight Subgroup 2 and pairs B835762 with 325862 in Tight Subgroup 1. SAPP separately proposes a broader Node 16 containing 254947, 325862 and B835762 through DYS607=16 · CDYa=36, while failing to recover N18544 inside a specific subcluster. B593262 remains the warning: broad STR Group 3 despite a confirmed, different terminal branch, R-FTA30932. Grouping ranks leads; SNP placement decides branches.

Pedigree audit changes the interpretation: 959947 is a documented descendant of Robert Glasgow-12 through William Glasgow-563, while 200475 probably descends through John M. Glasgow-1965. Their shared FT6135 state could be ancestral to Robert, but the available FTE32242 descendants through James M. Glasgow-193 do not display it. FT6135 is therefore an unresolved family-level clue, not a named branch marker.
Important counter-example: 200475 and 999763 are identical across the displayed Y-111 panel (GD 0), yet the Block Tree places 999763 on confirmed child R-FTE32242 while 200475 remains basal R-FT20271. Even a perfect 111-marker match can therefore conceal a real SNP split.
Two different “closest” results: 1002232 is Alexander's closest FT20271 match on the standard Y-111 panel at GD 3, while B696189 has the fewest mismatches on the larger Big Y STR comparison at 3 of 650. Neither receives a shared downstream SNP with Alexander on the Block Tree, so the data do not justify choosing either as the nearer paper-tree cousin.
Two questions must stay separate for 1002232: the documented tester line reaches James J Glasgow-2738. Wilson Crossier Glasgow and Mary McCracken are excluded as his parents by their seven-child estate group; Robert Glasgow-2769 remains only an uncertain working father. B580327 and 1002232 share DYS714=27, GD 3 at Y-111 and 4 differences across 662 comparable Big Y STRs, but no exposed SNP below FT20271. The genetic pairing does not choose James's father.

DYS export: B580327's file contains values for all 829 exported STR/FTY fields. It is a complete reference profile, but it cannot create another pairwise distance by itself. The existing Big Y comparison already uses the 622–666 markers callable in common with each Big Y match; a second tester's DYS export would be needed to inspect exactly which extended markers differ.

The B580327 raw file is dated 27 October 2022, while the match and named/private exports were downloaded 11 August 2026. All 15 numeric match-side positions were checked against the older raw file and remain covered ancestral calls; named sites are interpreted from the current export and pairwise screen. No living tester identity or raw sequence is published here.

Key interpretation: the three Farrier/Ferrier lines are too close at Y-111 to ignore, but their broad R-M269 labels do not establish that they carry FT20271. They could represent a surname change, a much older shared paternal ancestor, or ordinary STR convergence. A Big Y upgrade from one of those lines would discriminate between those possibilities.

Allele-step distance

This page's transparent sum of allele differences on the smaller shared panel. It reproduces the new B580327 export's available GDist values, but is labelled separately because provider rules for multi-copy markers can differ.

GroupingApp GDist / RDist

GDist is the app's pairwise genetic distance. RDist is its panel-normalized grouping score. Neither is a generation count, TMRCA, SNP branch or proof of relationship.

SAPP original / adjusted GD

Original GD is calculated from the observed STR endpoints. Adjusted GD is recalculated along SAPP's chosen tree to model convergence and back-mutation. It can change when SNPs, genealogies or the input kit set change.

Named SNP branches

A downstream SNP such as FTE32242 gives a reliable branch order. A block may contain several equivalent named SNPs, so one displayed branch step is not necessarily one mutation.

Private Big Y variants

These usually provide the most useful recent separation. They require kit-owner or administrator downloads and coverage checks; public tables do not provide the exact pairwise count.
