Current conclusion
PRONI `D300/1/5/49` contains a grant of probate and copy will for William Glasgow of Larne, with the will dated 6 December 1815. This is the highest-value surviving record for testing William's wife, children, occupation and relationship to the older Larne household. The catalogue description alone does not expose its clauses. A 28 November 1804 lease to William Glasgow of Larne, farmer, is a strong identity candidate but contains no exposed family statement. Parentage under James-1509 and Janet Shutter remains unproved until the register, monument or will wording is read. A published 1899 transcription of the Larne Parish Churchyard monument directly proves William's wife Elizabeth and daughters Jane Shutter, Eliza and Mary. The distinctive name **Jane Shutter Glasgow** makes the proposed descent from James Glasgow and Janet Shutter substantially stronger than a naming-pattern guess; the parentage is **probable**, while the monument relationships within William's own household are direct evidence. An 1824 renewal of a Larne lease first made to William and Hugh Glasgow in 1736 names the new tenant as Elizabeth Glasgow, widow of Larne. She is a strong candidate for this William's reported wife, but the catalogue does not name her late husband. Read together with William's surviving 1815 will, the renewal is a specific route to proving or rejecting the proposed descent from Hugh-1503.
Archive access status
PRONI's current comprehensive digitised-records inventory does not list `D300/1/5/49`, `D300/2/1/100/69` or the related Larne lease files. Their catalogue descriptions are public, but the will clauses and renewal recitals have not been inspected online. A copy order or archive visit is required; see PRONI's [digitised-records inventory](https://www.proni.gov.uk/publications/digitised-and-born-digital-records-available-ecatalogue). New evidence reviewed 4 October 2026: Inspected April–December 1792 Northern Star advertisements name Wm. Glasgow as master of the brig William on Belfast voyages to Rotterdam, Oporto and Bordeaux. They substantiate a real named captain corresponding to the inherited occupational suggestion, but do not prove that he was this Larne household’s William. The profile’s dated family monument and 1815 will remain the appropriate identity tests.

Identity assessment — 4 October 2026 early newspaper review
The earliest newly inspected notice is [Northern Star, 21 April 1792, p.1](https://www.newspapers.com/image/72014483/), dated Belfast 18 April: William Glasgow is master of the brig William for Rotterdam and back to Belfast, with freight enquiries to Narcissus Batt. Four inspected copies run through 5 May. Two December copies corroborate the Bordeaux service; three January 1796 notices name Captain Glasgow on an arrival from Petersburg, without a forename. These give an occupation and voyages, not a Larne household or kinship. The [complete source account and HOLD draft](/research/subjects/william-glasgow-irish-newspapers/#captain-william) retains all original links. No family attachment changes.
Current conclusion — Larne passenger newspaper report, 5 October 2026
Uncertain 1763 Larne birth and 1816 death permit 1788. Prior research compares this profile with the independently named 1792 William master; neither the Ann notices nor that later role identifies the 1788 captain. One or more surname-only shipmasters, with the two passenger reports clearly one reprinted notice. The January inward and February clearance entries are compatible but unproved continuity. Glasgow-3324, Glasgow-2474 and Glasgow-4124 remain possible comparisons; no forename or family identity is established. No family or life-date change follows.
Source findings
The brig Ann is listed inward with Glasgow as master and Larne as origin. Original checked under MARINE LIST / INWARD ENTRIES. Row reads “Brig Ann, Glasgow, Larne”; adjacent rows follow vessel, master, origin order. Retain Glasgow as the unnamed brig master, not the city. No forename, kin or personal residence stated. The two February prose notices reprint one report; continuity with the January inward and February clearance entries is possible, not proved. Tuesday is relative report wording, not an exact arrival day inferred from the issue date. Larne is voyage origin, not the captain’s birthplace. [The Columbian Herald, or, The Independent Courier of North-America, 1788-01-28, p.2](https://www.newspapers.com/image/604128637/) The brig Ann, Captain Glasgow, is reported arriving from Larne after a tedious passage with near 200 passengers in good health; the report praises the captain’s humane and generous behaviour. Original checked. “Tuesday arrived, after a tedious passage, the brig Ann, Capt. Glasgow, from Larne, with near 200 passengers, all in good health …” Passage continues with praise of the captain’s humane behaviour. Personal surname/title, but no forename. Original checked under MARINE LIST / CLEARED OUT. Row reads “Brig Ann, Glasgow, Georgetown”; surrounding table rows confirm vessel, master, destination order. Glasgow is the unnamed master, not a city. William Glasgow, Falmouth master, 1787: Name and adult maritime chronology fit; Larne and the Belfast brig William are not stated in this Falmouth record. The named master is a documented subject. Glasgow-3324, the Larne maritime candidate, is possible by name, age and occupation only. No record here links him to Larne, the Belfast brig William, the Ann or a family. Do not combine those masters solely by name. No family or life-date change follows.
Source findings
William Glasgow is named as master of the Falmouth, from Baltimore, in an Amsterdam-arrivals entry dated 10 June 1787, printed in a newspaper issue of 6 May 1788. Provider labels the collection Poulson’s American Daily Advertiser; the contemporary masthead title has not been independently checked. The heading explicitly covers Amsterdam arrivals in 1787. June 10 is the listed 1787 arrival date; 6 May 1788 is the later newspaper issue date. Falmouth is the vessel, Baltimore its listed origin, and William Glasgow its named master. Another entry names a vessel Glasgow with Thomas Johnson as master; that is not a Glasgow surname person. Printed long-s is normalized to s. The named master is a documented subject. Glasgow-3324, the Larne maritime candidate, is possible by name, age and occupation only. No record here links him to Larne, the Belfast brig William, the Ann or a family. Do not combine those masters solely by name. [Poulson’s American Daily Advertiser, 1788-05-06, p.3](https://www.newspapers.com/image/1034014372/)

These notices name the vessel William and Captain Glasgow; no captain forename is stated in them. Independently inspected 1792 sailing advertisements explicitly name Wm./William Glasgow as master of the same brig, supporting probable continuity. Vessel names and voyage ports do not establish personal residence or kinship. Long-s typography is normalized to s. The Falmouth master William Glasgow in a 1787 Amsterdam entry is another compatible name/occupation record, without a voyage or identity bridge. Current conclusion — additional 1792–1793 newspaper originals, 5 October 2026
Hugh and John Henderson advertise prunes, French plums, almonds and other goods arrived per the William, Captain Glasgow, from Bordeaux; notice dated 5 December 1792. Repeated Henderson advertisement dated 5 December 1792. The William is the vessel; this notice supplies only Captain Glasgow’s surname. Continuity with the separately named 1792 master is probable, not proved. The later issue date does not date another arrival. [Northern Star, 1792-12-19, p.1](https://www.newspapers.com/image/72018049/), [Northern Star, 1792-12-22, p.1](https://www.newspapers.com/image/72018143/), [Northern Star, 1792-12-26, p.4](https://www.newspapers.com/image/72018327/), [Northern Star, 1793-01-02, p.1](https://www.newspapers.com/image/72018438/), [Northern Star, 1793-01-05, p.1](https://www.newspapers.com/image/72018546/), [Northern Star, 1793-01-09, p.1](https://www.newspapers.com/image/72018636/) Shipping intelligence says the William, Captain Glasgow, belonging to Belfast, sailed from Bordeaux on the 3rd instant; an embargo order from Paris arrived there the following day, detaining four British and thirty-three Dutch vessels. The original reports an embargo, not capture of the William. The account does not explicitly say whether this vessel was among those detained after departure. The 3rd instant is relative to the report; no new exact voyage day is assigned. Captain forename unstated; continuity with the named 1792 master remains probable. [Northern Star, 1793-02-20, p.3](https://www.newspapers.com/image/72019727/) Shipping intelligence names William Glasgow as master of the Jean, from Belfast, arrived safe at Oporto on the 5th instant and expected ready to sail in twenty-one days. Jean is a different vessel from the brig William. Same named master, Belfast and Oporto support compatible continuity, not a proved identity or vessel renaming. Expected departure is not a completed voyage. [Northern Star, 1793-09-21, p.3](https://www.newspapers.com/image/72022133/) A shipping list names Jean, William Glasgow, ditto, where the preceding entry establishes ditto as master. Explicit personal name and master role; Jean remains a different vessel. No family, personal residence, age or completed voyage is supplied. Current conclusion — 1794–1797 shipping and checked issue ranges, 5 October 2026
The possible identity with William Glasgow of Larne (Glasgow-3324) remains on HOLD. The inspected advertisements fit the occupational suggestion already attached to that profile, but do not state family or personal residence. Additional cargo and arrival notices name only Captain Glasgow; continuity with the separately named 1792 master is probable, not proved. Original Northern Star mastheads now explain four apparent advertisement-date conflicts as printed issue ranges; no new personal or family identification follows. The Jean, William Glasgow, master, from London, is reported arrived safe at Derry on the 6th instant. Explicit personal forename and master role. Jean is a different vessel from the brig William; continuity between named masters is compatible but unproved. The relative arrival day is preserved; no family or personal residence is supplied. - [Northern Star, 1792-01-18, p.4](https://www.newspapers.com/image/72012833/): Captain Glasgow (forename not printed) (master of the vessel William (Rotterdam cargo)) — **possible** match. Captain surname only; William is the vessel. Continuity with the separately named master Wm. Glasgow of the Belfast brig William is probable (same brig, Belfast base, same trades). Profile assignment: Glasgow-3324 is possible only, as argued in group 72014483. - [The Northern Star, 1792-04-21, p.1](https://www.newspapers.com/image/72014483/): William Glasgow (master of the brig William) — **possible** match. The master is explicitly named William/Wm. Glasgow of the Belfast brig William (and in 1793–94 of the Jean, from Belfast). That gives a documentary person, but he cannot yet be placed on WikiTree. Glasgow-3324 (William of Larne, c.1763–1816, wife Elizabeth Stewart, daughters Jane Shutter, Eliza and Mary) is the only profile with any suggestion of seafaring. That suggestion comes from an inherited Kilwaughter family chronology ('could be the William Glasgow, captain of the "William"'), not from a record. In 1804 a Larne deed calls him a farmer. That is not a conflict (masters often held land) but it is not support either. Age about 29 in 1792 is compatible. - [Poulson’s American Daily Advertiser, 1788-05-06, p.3](https://www.newspapers.com/image/1034014372/): William Glasgow (master of the Falmouth, from Baltimore, arrived Amsterdam 1787) — **possible** match. The entry gives the forename, the vessel (Falmouth), its origin (Baltimore) and the destination (Amsterdam), with no residence or kin. Glasgow-3324 (William, Larne, c.1763–1816) would have been about 24. A Wm. Glasgow commanded the Belfast brig William on European voyages (Rotterdam, Oporto, Bordeaux) in 1792–1799, according to his local findings, but that captain is not proved to be him, and nothing links either to a Baltimore vessel. The other William profiles of suitable age are Scottish or Irish baptisms with no seafaring record (Glasgow-1430, 1231, 1223, 1124, 1320, 1385, 2915, 3326, 4139). Glasgow-357 (William, 1757–1805, Currituck, North Carolina) is an American namesake, with no maritime or Baltimore link. Possible only.
