Current conclusion and tree action

[Compare the Larne, Inishrush and American family reconstruction](/people/glasgow-951.html#larne-reconstruction), including the alternative immediate-parent routes and their source tests.

### Larne hypothesis context — 13 September 2026

If Adam `Glasgow-3902` and John were brothers, the proposed James
`Glasgow-1509` → Adam route is compatible with John's 1767 birth: a reported
1737 father would have been about 30. That conditional extension is not evidence
that John was James's son. The Bible's nine children and its Adam–James–John,
Rose–Maria pattern continue to support an older Adam and Maria as a naming-model
alternative, while no record names either of John's parents. The Bible weakens
Alexander `Glasgow-951` as a proposed child of John and Mary; it does not decide
wider Lisnagaver kinship.

### Master reassessment, 5 September 2026

The Bible's nine-child sequence contains no Alexander. This substantially
weakens any proposal that John and Mary Arthur were Alexander `Glasgow-951`'s
parents, although a family register cannot prove absolute completeness. Do not
attach Alexander as their child.

The 1831 Inishrush John is probably this Bible John, based on locality and the
close household reconstruction, but the return names only its head. The
separate Adam household proves neither brotherhood nor shared parents. Maria's
identity with Maria Glasgow, wife of Alexander Wallace, remains possible rather
than proved.

John Glasgow (`Glasgow-822`), born 10 April 1767, is the strongest identity
candidate for the John Glasco who headed Inishrush house 2 in 1831.
`Glasgow-3927` now already represents that record-defined householder. Submit or
maintain a merge proposal between the two identities, but leave it pending until
both profiles are reviewed.

Adam Glasgow (`Glasgow-3902`), born about 1758, cannot have been John's father:
he was only about nine when John was born. Brother and cousin are both viable,
but no record states either relationship. John and the record-defined duplicate
`Glasgow-3927` should not be attached beneath Adam's unidentified-father
placeholder `Glasgow-3905`.

Source findings

5 October 2026: this profile remains a possible County Londonderry contemporary of the John Glasco listed 24 September 1799. The [original roster and 1798 Dublin comparison](/research/subjects/newspapers-early-glasgow/#john-glasco-irish-rosters) do not identify him or establish a family relationship. The 1799 list category is unresolved; do not call him a juror or freeholder.

| Source | Finding | Evidence effect |
| --- | --- | --- |
| John and Mary Glasgow family Bible, images saved as [page 1](sources/john_glasgow_bible_1.jpeg) and [page 2](sources/john_glasgow_bible_2.jpeg) | Records John's birth on 10 April 1767, Mary's birth on 25 March 1774, their marriage on 21 May 1798, nine children, and son James's death on 20 April 1823. The death entry gives **no place**. | Primary family evidence. It disproves the derivative claim that the Bible places the family in Ohio in 1823. |
| Same Bible child order, compared with [Scotland's People guidance on traditional forenames](https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/help-and-support/guides/forenames) | The Bible explicitly calls Rose the first daughter. The sons occur as Adam (first), James (second), John (third), and Arthur (fourth); the first three positions correspond to the traditional Scottish sequence paternal grandfather, maternal grandfather, then father. The daughters begin Rose, Maria, Jane; under the same convention Maria in second position would represent the paternal grandmother. | Strong onomastic evidence that John's father may have been an older Adam and his mother Maria. The exact third-son match to father John shows the sequence is not merely a list of overlapping common names. Naming custom is not proof and the third daughter Jane does not match mother Mary. |
| [John Glasgow family page and register](https://hiltner.com/mckeown/getperson.php?personID=I368&tree=tree1) | Places eldest daughter Rose's 1799 birth at Inishrush and transcribes the nuclear family. | Derivative but specific evidence that this family was established at Inishrush by 1799. |
| [John Glasgow McKeown family-Bible transcription](https://www.hiltner.com/mckeown/getperson.php?personID=I1&tree=tree1) and [Drimbolg church history](https://www.oneirishrover.com/drimbolg-reformed-presbyterian-church/) | A second family Bible records that John's grandson John Glasgow McKeown was born at `Innicruch`/Inishrush on 17 April 1821 and baptised by Rev. Joseph Orr. Orr served the Drimbolg Reformed Presbyterian congregation, whose history records a John Glasgow in 1809 and as an elder in 1827. | Independent descendant evidence joining this family to Inishrush and the same ministerial network. This substantially strengthens `Glasgow-822 = Glasgow-3927`, but does not name Adam or state kinship. |
| Physical/source-date audit of the John and Mary Bible | The volume was printed in 1797, but the family entries include deaths extending to 1859 and 1886 and contain later hands. The marriage entry supplies a date but no place, witnesses or parents. | Treat it as a family register containing strong dates, not as a contemporaneous 1798 marriage certificate or proof of parentage. |
| [1796 County Londonderry flax-premium list](https://www.billmacafee.com/1796flaxgrowerslist/1796flaxgrowersderry.pdf) | The county's only Glasgow entry is John Glasgow of Desertoghill, awarded two spinning wheels. John-822 was 29, unmarried, and still in Ireland. | A plausible earlier record of John, but the parish differs from Inishrush and the list gives no age, family or later residence. Identity is unproved. |
| [1799 County Londonderry pro-Union declaration](https://www.kinsleuth.com/belnews/1790-1800.htm), checked against the original newspaper image | `Glasco, Adam` appears in the flattened abstract, but the original prints no address or ditto mark after his name. The apparent Cloughole assignment results from flattened newspaper columns. | County-level occurrence only. It cannot be assigned to Cloughole or identified with Adam-3902 and supplies no relationship to John. |
| [QUB thesis, Appendix 10](https://pureadmin.qub.ac.uk/ws/portalfiles/portal/364690144/The_rundale_system_in_Ireland.pdf) | A remembered 1801 joint lease of part of Inishrush names Hills, Hastings, Neills and Brattans, not Glasgow. | Negative only for the named head lessees of that part-townland lease. Either Glasgow could still have been an undertenant or occupied another portion. |
| [Virtual Record Treasury exact-search audit](../Glasgow-3927/findings.md) | Exact searches for `Adam Glasco`, `Adam Glasgow`, `John Glasco` and `Inishrush` produced only the known 1831 census copies, no Adam Glasgow hit, an unrelated 1766 Derryloran John, and non-relational Inishrush material. Raw responses are preserved under `research/Glasgow-3927/sources/`. | No direct kinship evidence exists in the currently indexed Treasury corpus. This does not cover undigitised PRONI, estate or church records. |
| Hiltner/McKeown source catalogue `S17` | The database cites Robert Glasgow's `Descendants of John Glasgow.pdf 2018 and Glasgow Register Report.doc` for John and his descendants, but the underlying files are not attached to John's public media and were not present in the archived-PDF inventory. | A concrete missing family compilation, not evidence for parents until its contents and citations are recovered. Saved catalogue page under the Glasgow-3905 source set. |
| [John Glasgow letter, 20 March 1847](https://www.hiltner.com/mckeown/documents/John%20Glasgow%20letter%20to%20Jane%20Glasgow%20Gray%203-20-1847.pdf) | John recalled family beekeeping at Inishrush. The transcript separates three items: a letter from Adam dated 27 December 1846; R. Mulhollan's report about western Canada and the potato rot; and McCaivey's transatlantic news that James Glasgow reportedly had a child by a servant who was a daughter of Henry Barkly. | Direct Inishrush association plus evidence that John remained in the intimate news network of a local James Glasgow. The original 1851 marriage of younger James Glasgow-1623 to Rosanna Barkley, daughter of Henry and farm servant of Tyanee, is the strongest identity match. The child remains unnamed; the earlier attribution of the report to Mulhollan is withdrawn. |
| [Henry Barkly's 1831 Tyanee household](https://www.billmacafee.com/1831census/1831derrycensusnames.pdf), [Jane Barklie's 1828 marriage](https://genealogy.torrens.org/BannValley/church/KilreaP1/Marriages/1828.html), and [Nancy Glasgow's 1842 marriage](https://cotyrone.com/~inthenews/marriages-notices-1840-42/) | Henry Barkly headed a seven-person Presbyterian household at adjoining Tyanee; the marriage register identifies wife Jane Galloway and one daughter. Adam's sixth daughter Nancy also married into Tyanee. | Triangulates the people and locality in John's 1847 news with Adam's proved family network. It strengthens close association but does not make the reported James identification certain. |
| [6 April 1772 Tamlaght O'Crilly declaration](https://arborealis.ca/records/newspapers/kilrea-news/1770-1779/) | Hugh Glasgow, Thos. Mulhollan and James Berkley appear in the same Inishrush-area arms-surrender subscriber list. | Provides an older local Glasgow–Mulhollan–Berkley community link relevant to names in John's 1847 letter. It supports a possible information network, not a family relationship or identification of R. Mulhollan. |
| [Original 1830 Richland Township census page](https://archive.org/details/populationsc18300127unit/page/n484/mode/1up) | The Ohio household's John was aged 40-49. John born in 1767 was 63. | Excludes the household head from being John-822, but does **not** invalidate the 1767 birth. Audit the WikiTree source attachment: it may have been attached because a son or other household member was present. Detach it from John only if directly attached to him; preserve it on any correctly identified person. |
| [Guernsey County, Ohio, Deed Book H, p. 457](https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-89WY-TFPB) | A deed recorded in 1833 is the earliest Ohio record located in this review for John. | Corrects the migration chronology but names no Irish parent or sibling in the information inspected so far. Obtain a full abstract. |
| [Drimbolg Reformed Presbyterian Church history](https://www.oneirishrover.com/drimbolg-reformed-presbyterian-church/) | A John Glasgow attended a session at Drumlamph in 1809 and was an elder present on 19 July 1827. | Exact denomination, locality and age fit for `Glasgow-822`, who was 42 and 60. Strong identity support, though the church account states no birth date. |
| W. Melancthon Glasgow, [*History of the Reformed Presbyterian Church in America* (1888), Londonderry congregation](https://archive.org/details/historyofrefor00glas/page/634/mode/2up) | The Guernsey County congregation was organised about 1822; its account names `Glasgow` among the old and prominent families, with William Sloane pastor from 1829 to 1838 and James Love from 1839 to 1864. | Independently places a Glasgow household in John's exact Ohio denomination and settlement. The printed account gives no forename or Irish relationship; the congregation's underlying admissions/session records are now a specific proof target. |
| Dr James H. Sterrett, [“Western Pennsylvania Obituaries in *The Reformed Presbyterian*, 1837-1862”](https://media.wpgs.org/wpgs/wp-content/uploads/sites/5/2021/06/Volume-08-Number-01-Membership-Year-1981-1982_members.pdf) and [original volume 15, February 1852 issue](https://books.google.com/books?id=1Hs0AQAAMAAJ&pg=PA375) | The full-view original scan was searched and pages 375-379 inspected. Its final obituary group names Catherine Kennedy, Elizabeth Carson, Hannah Walker and Ebenezer Craig, not John Glasgow. Searches for Glasgow, Glasco, Glascow, Guernsey, Ohio and relevant Londonderry terms produced no John notice. | Strong bounded negative for a formal obituary in volume 15, including the plausible issue after John's 23 December 1851 death. It cannot exclude a brief unindexed notice elsewhere in the periodical, but the identified volume is no longer unsearched. |
| [Guernsey County will index](https://www.sampubco.com/wills/oh/ohguernsey01.htm), 1967 typed *Wills Index of Guernsey County, Ohio, 1812-1900*, and [Guernsey County Genealogical Society probate holdings](https://www.guernseycountyohiogenealogy.com/publications) | Neither public will index contains a Glasgow testator. The society separately holds a probate case-file index covering the mid-1840s onward, but its entries are not public. | No recorded will has been found. An intestate administration remains possible, so no probate-based negative about John's heirs or relatives is justified until the case-file index is checked. |
| [First Kilrea Presbyterian marriage register, 6 October 1825](https://genealogy.torrens.org/BannValley/church/KilreaP1/Marriages/1825.html) | Mary Patton of Tyanee, daughter of John Patton and **Margaret Glasgow**, married Wilson Gordon. | Establishes another Glasgow woman in the immediate Portglenone–Tyanee network. Because Margaret already had a marriageable daughter in 1825, she belongs more naturally to Adam and John's generation and is a candidate sister or cousin, not a safely inferred daughter of Adam. The entry states no relationship to either man. |
| [Tamlaght O'Crilly 1831 census](https://genealogy.torrens.org/BannValley/church/Tamlaght/1831census_3.html), entry 1019 | John Glasco headed Inishrush house 2 with four males and four females. Adam Glasco separately headed house 91 with three males and five females. MacAfee and Torrens disagree about the denomination column. | Strong same-townland household evidence, but no internal names, ages or kinship. The denomination remains unresolved pending the original return. |
| Bible child sequence compared with the 1831 return | After married daughter Rose and deceased son James are removed, the four expected males are exactly John, sons Adam, John and Arthur. Mary plus daughters Maria, Jane, Lavina and Margaret gives five possible females, so the census total of four requires only one adult daughter to be elsewhere. | Near-exact household reconstruction and strong identity support. The new Gray evidence below makes Jane the leading candidate for the absent female. |
| [Complete Tamlaght O'Crilly 1831 census transcription](https://genealogy.torrens.org/BannValley/church/Tamlaght/1831census.tsv) | John Gray headed Boveedy house 79 with exactly one male and one female, both Presbyterian. John Glasgow's daughter Jane was then 28; her known husband John Gray, born 25 December 1798, was 32. | Strong contemporary household match for Jane and John as a married, childless couple living outside her parents' home. The return does not name the woman, so identity remains probable rather than proved. |
| [1833 Tamlaght O'Crilly Tithe Applotment transcription](https://www.irishgenealogyhub.com/derry/tithe-applotments/tamlaght-o-crilly-parish.php) | `Jno. Gray` was still a landholder at Boveady in 1833; Samuel Gray was separately recorded there. | Corroborates continuity of the 1831 Boveedy John Gray household immediately before Jane and her husband appear in descendant accounts as emigrants to Kentucky. It does not name John's wife. |
| [Jane Glasgow descendant page](https://hiltner.com/mckeown/getperson.php?personID=I374&tree=tree1), [John Gray descendant page](https://hiltner.com/mckeown/getperson.php?personID=I457&tree=tree1), [Glasgow-822 biography](https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Glasgow-822), and [original family grave photograph](https://hiltner.com/mckeown/headstones/Gray,%20Glasgow%20children%20143338757_1451589391.jpg) | The compiled family source identifies Jane's husband as John Gray, born 25 December 1798 in Ireland, and the WikiTree biography reports that they married in Ireland before going to Kentucky. Their adjacent inscribed stones corroborate the later burial grouping of Jane Glasgow (1802-1893) and John Gray (1798-1886). | The Ireland-marriage statement is a descendant report, not a located marriage entry. Combined with the exact 1831 Boveedy household it makes Jane the best explanation for the missing female. |
| [PRONI church-record inventory](https://www.proni.gov.uk/files/proni/2026-01/PRONI%20Guide%20to%20Church%20Records.pdf) and [RootsIreland Tamlaght O'Crilly coverage](https://www.rootsireland.ie/derry-genealogy/tamlaght-ocrilly-civil-parish/) | Boveedy Presbyterian marriages survive only from 1842. | Explains why no local marriage entry can presently confirm an expected marriage before 1831; absence from the surviving register is not negative evidence. |
| [Ordnance Survey Memoir emigrants, 1834-1835](https://www.billmacafee.com/emigrationrecords/derryemigrants1834and1835.pdf) | The extracted Tamlaght O'Crilly list names no Gray, Glasgow, Wallace or relevant Mulholland family. | No support for a 1834-35 departure; the couple may have left before or after the covered window. This does not identify the 1831 wife. |
| Descendant naming in the Hiltner family pages | John's son Arthur named his first son Adam; daughter Rose had sons John Glasgow McKeown and Arthur Glasgow McKeown and later used Adam twice; son Adam also named a son Adam. | Shows that Adam was a persistent identity-bearing name in John's Glasgow line rather than a single isolated choice. These are derivative descendant records and cannot identify the original namesake. |
| [Arthur Glasgow, son of John and Mary](https://hiltner.com/mckeown/getperson.php?personID=I377&tree=tree1), [Mary Arthur](https://hiltner.com/mckeown/getperson.php?personID=I369&tree=tree1), [Arthur Glasgow-649](https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Glasgow-649), and Faris's [WorldCat summary](https://search.worldcat.org/title/The-Glasgow-family-of-Adams-County-Ohio-%3A-a-genealogy-of-the-descendants-of-Robert-Glasgow-%281749-1839%29-and-his-wife-Rosanna-of-Bush-Creek-Adams-County-Ohio/oclc/22731567) | Arthur was John's fourth son and later gave his first two sons the recurring names Adam and James. Other descendants used `Arthur Glasgow` as a compound name. John's wife was Mary Arthur. Faris calls emigrant Robert a son of James of Moneymore; later accounts make Robert, Joseph and Arthur brothers. | This opens a coherent but low-confidence model in which older Adam was another son of James and brother of Arthur-649, so John's `Adam-James-John-Arthur` sequence preserved father, grandfather, self and uncle. Mary Arthur independently explains Arthur, and no record names older Adam in the emigrant family. |
| [Arthur Glasgow's 1901 obituary transcript](https://hiltner.com/mckeown/getperson.php?personID=I377&tree=tree1) | Reports only his death near Londonderry, funeral and advanced age; it names no Irish relative or origin. | Negative result: the obituary does not connect the family to Arthur Glasgow-649 or identify John-822's parents. |
| Migration chronology from descendant pages and later U.S. records | The false 1830 Ohio census is removed. John's adult children begin appearing in Ohio by the mid-1830s, and John is there by 1840; an 1831 Irish household followed by emigration in the early 1830s is chronologically coherent. | The corrected chronology supports rather than contradicts the proposed 1831 identity. Individual immigration dates remain derivative unless supported by passenger or naturalisation records. |
| [Alexander Wallace and Maria Glasgow family page](https://hiltner.com/mckeown/familygroup.php?familyID=F782&sitever=standard&tree=tree1) | John's daughter Maria later had children at Rasharkin in 1840 and 1842. No Alexander Wallace household occurs in the complete 1831 Tamlaght O'Crilly return. | Establishes later movement within the wider Bann Valley network, but supplies no evidence that Maria had married or left home by 1831. |
| W. M. Glasgow family manuscript, saved as [PDF](../Glasgow-540/sources/william_melanchthon_glasgow_family_history.pdf) | The manuscript explicitly traces William Glasgow to son John, grandson Hugh (born about 1706), and Hugh's sons John, Robert and Hugh. It then traces only the youngest Hugh's children and says that family emigrated together in 1796, leaving many kin behind. It never names Adam of Inishrush or John born 1767. | Defines the claimed Hugh-548 line but supplies no direct bridge to either target. The omitted “kin” cannot be converted into named children or nephews. |
| [*Biographical History of Page County, Iowa* (Chicago: Lewis & Dunbar, 1890), pp. 669–70, biography of Alexander McKeown](https://archive.org/details/biographicalhist00lewi_4/page/668/mode/2up) | A published descendant biography identifies Alexander McKeown as a son of Alexander and Rose Glasgow McKeown, both natives of County Antrim, and names their children Henry, John, James, Adam, Mary J., Alexander, Arthur G., Levina, Rose A., Glasgow and William. | Independent nineteenth-century support for Rose's Irish identity and the persistent Adam/Arthur/James/Glasgow naming set in John-822's descendants. It does not name Rose's grandparents or relate her father John to Adam or Hugh. |
| [Registry of Deeds Index Project](https://irishdeedsindex.net/search/index.php), surname and variant search, 1700-1850 | The current volunteer index returns seventeen Glasgow transactions, including Kilwaughter, Larne, Cookstown and Cavankilgreen entries, but no deed naming Adam or John of Inishrush and no Glasgow transaction located at Inishrush. The indexed 1734 Inishrush leases name other head tenants. | Bounded negative result only: no already-indexed memorial proves the relationship. Unindexed memorial text remains a live route through the FamilySearch full-text collection. |
| Public-media and web-archive audit of Hiltner source `S17` | The cited 2018 `Descendants of John Glasgow.pdf` / `Glasgow Register Report.doc` is not exposed as media on John or his children, has no source-page attachment, and was not found in the Internet Archive CDX inventory of the Hiltner document/PDF paths. | Prevents treating the title as evidence. Its contents remain unknown and cannot support a parent or sibling until the actual file is recovered. |
| FamilyTreeDNA Glasgow project and existing project review; individual kit metadata is retained only in the private research record | The historical John-1767 line has been compared with the broad U106/FT25406 Glasgow group. Public evidence does not establish a tested, documented strict male-line connection to Adam or Hugh-540; the older “Melanchthon branch” claim remains unverified. | Wider shared paternal ancestry does not prove recent Adam–John or Hugh–John kinship. |

1831 household reconstruction

The most probable reconstruction is now:

```text
Inishrush house 2
Males:   John Glasgow; sons Adam, John and Arthur                 = 4
Females: Mary Arthur; daughters Maria, Lavina and Margaret       = 4
Elsewhere
Rose Glasgow: already married to Alexander McKeown
Jane Glasgow: probably the unnamed wife in John Gray's 1m/1f
              Presbyterian household at Boveedy
James Glasgow: died 20 April 1823
```

This is not direct proof because the census named only household heads. It is,
however, a substantially tighter fit than the earlier unspecified missing-daughter
argument: family evidence says Jane married John Gray in Ireland, and the parish
return contains a contemporary John Gray household with exactly the required wife.
Maria has no matched Alexander Wallace household in the parish, while the only
Richard Mulholland household is a three-person Roman Catholic household at
Killygullib and is not a credible match to Lavina's later husband.

Relationship assessment

### Direct-proof result

No inspected gravestone, family Bible, 1847 letter, census, tithe, flax list,
deed index, probate index, lease transcription or church-history extract calls
Adam and John brothers or names a shared parent. The separate McKeown Bible makes
John's identity with the Inishrush/Drimbolg man appreciably stronger; it does not
change the exact relationship from inferred to proved.

| Placement relative to Adam | Assessment | Reason |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Son | Contradicted | Adam was about nine when John was born. |
| Brother | Plausible, but insufficient for attachment | Only nine years apart; separate households in the same townland; John fits the Drimbolg elder; patterned naming and the 1847 news support association. No record names a shared parent or uses a kin term, and the census denomination is disputed. |
| Cousin | Plausible alternative | The records never expressly name a shared parent. |
| Unrelated namesake | Possible but weaker | Requires two contemporary Covenanter John Glasgows associated with the same Inishrush/Drimbolg setting after the false Ohio evidence is removed. |

Shared-parent naming hypothesis only

The Bible revives, but does not prove, this working reconstruction:

```text
Older Adam Glasgow = Maria Unknown
├── Adam Glasgow (about 1758), of Inishrush
└── John Glasgow (1767), probably the 1831 Inishrush householder
```

This is stronger than simply observing that John used the names Rose and Adam,
but it remains circular if used to create the very parents it is meant to test.
His sons fall in the order `Adam - James - John`, matching the traditional
Scottish paternal-grandfather, maternal-grandfather, father sequence; his second
daughter was Maria, the conventional paternal-grandmother position. Keep the
shared parents unnamed structurally until a record supplies them, but preserve
older Adam and Maria only as search terms, not attached people.

Relationship to Hugh Glasgow-548

William Melanchthon Glasgow's late family history says Hugh-548's youngest son
Hugh had a family farm in County Londonderry near Portglenone by 1780. That
specific locality aligns with the two 1740 Tamlaght O'Crilly Hugh households,
the 1772 parish Hugh, and John's proved Inishrush association. The cumulative
case makes membership in Hugh-548's extended local family highly probable, but
does not state the intervening parent.

The two 1740 Hugh households suggest a cleaner topology. Entry 1272, beside
Ellis and McCullough, is the stronger candidate for Hugh-548; entry 1195 could
head the collateral line that produced older Adam and Maria. If the choice is
restricted to Hugh-548's traditional sons, John-549 and Robert-550 are both
possible direct fathers, but the current evidence does not distinguish them.
Older Adam cannot be placed beneath either without compressing two generations
into 1758.

Paste-ready relationship note

```wikitext
John is the strongest proposed identity match for the John Glasco who headed a household at Inishrush in the 1831 census. Published transcriptions disagree about its denomination, so that field remains unresolved. His family register and 1847 letter connect him personally to Inishrush. A separate Bible records that his grandson John Glasgow McKeown was born at Inishrush in 1821 and baptised by Rev. Joseph Orr, the minister associated with the Drimbolg congregation in which a John Glasgow appears in 1809 and as an elder in 1827. His Bible sons occur as Adam, James and John, matching the traditional Scottish positions for paternal grandfather, maternal grandfather and father; the second daughter Maria occupies the usual paternal-grandmother position. The four surviving household males also reproduce the 1831 total exactly. John's 1847 letter relayed intimate Irish news about a James Glasgow and Henry Barkly's daughter in the same Inishrush-Tyanee network as Adam's proved son James and daughter Nancy. The 1830 Ohio census previously cited for John belongs to a man aged 40-49, whereas this John was 63, and the Bible gives no place for son James's 1823 death. The cumulative case strongly supports the proposed identity, but it does not establish brotherhood with Adam; cousin or another collateral relationship remains possible. Leave the parents blank and any merge proposal pending for review.
Current conclusion — military and medical notices, 1816–1839; identity unresolved, 5 October 2026
Eight inspected newspaper notices document successive military-medical roles or status changes under the names J. Glasco, John Glasco, and Glasco. The 1816 J. Glasco to 1822 John Glasco connection is probable because the 1822 notice places John on half-pay of the 59 th Foot; it is not explicit. The August 1826 notice calls a retiring surgeon “John Glasco, sen.”, while the December 1836 notice names Staff-Surgeon John Glasco appointed at Liverpool after employment in Grenada. The senior 1826 retiree may be a different man from the later staff surgeon. The 1838 Liverpool subscription and 1839 half-pay retirement are compatible with a later career sequence but do not resolve all links. No existing profile is assigned.
The 59th Foot: Assistant Surgeon J. Glasco was to be surgeon vice Hagan, deceased; the appointment entry is dated 8 February 1816. The entry date is 8 February, not a reported date of Hagan’s death. The issue was published on 28 February. Only the initial J. is printed. [Freeman's Journal and Daily Commercial Advertiser, 1816-02-28, p.3](https://www.newspapers.com/image/1050078150/)
The 60th Foot: Surgeon John Glasco, from half-pay of the 59th Foot, was to be surgeon vice William Burgess Marle, who exchanged. The full name and prior 59th Foot half-pay provide a probable career link to the 1816 J. Glasco, not explicit identity proof. [Freeman's Journal and Daily Commercial Advertiser, 1822-10-02, p.4](https://www.newspapers.com/image/1050080149/)
Under Hospital Staff, “To be Deputy Inspectors of Hospitals by Brevet,” the notice names Staff-Surgeon John Glasco. Appointment wording is explicit. The precise effective/commission date is not established; the issue date is the safe date. [Freeman's Journal and Daily Commercial Advertiser, 1825-06-21, p.3](https://www.newspapers.com/image/1050086323/)
For the 60th Foot, Assistant Surgeon John Winterscale from the 71st Foot was to be surgeon vice Glasco, promoted; this replacement entry is dated 20 April 1826. The source shows Glasco promoted from the 60th Foot surgeon post but does not specify the promotion destination. [Freeman's Journal and Daily Commercial Advertiser, 1826-05-16, p.3](https://www.newspapers.com/image/1050127796/)
Under Hospital Staff, Surgeon Alexander Melville, M.D., from the 25th Foot, was appointed vice John Glasco, sen., who retires upon half-pay. The printed surname wraps across a line. The qualifier “sen.” is explicit and material; do not assume this retiree is the John Glasco reported in 1836–1839. Effective date is not established beyond the notice/issue dates. [Freeman's Journal and Daily Commercial Advertiser, 1826-08-18, p.1](https://www.newspapers.com/image/1050043397/)
Staff-Surgeon John Glasco, lately employed at Grenada, was appointed Surgeon of the Liverpool Recruiting District in the room of Staff-Surgeon Elliott, removed to Barbadoes. Full name, prior Grenada employment and Liverpool appointment are explicit. Relationship to the senior 1826 retiree remains unresolved. [Freeman's Journal and Daily Commercial Advertiser, 1836-12-30, p.1](https://www.newspapers.com/image/1050083649/)
A £1 Curran Monument subscription list includes “Staff-Surgeon Glasco, Liverpool.” Surname only; compatible with the 1836 Liverpool appointment, but a contribution list is not a service record or independent continuity proof. [Freeman's Journal and Daily Commercial Advertiser, 1838-08-31, p.2](https://www.newspapers.com/image/1050130719/)
Under Hospital Staff, Surgeon A. Sinclair, M.D., from the 25th Foot, was appointed vice John Glasco, who retires upon half-pay. Full name and retirement upon half-pay are stated; exact effective date was not seen. Links among this John, the 1836–1838 staff surgeon and the senior 1826 retiree remain qualified. Current conclusion — J. Glasco Dublin parish appeal signatory, 1838, 5 October 2026
This proves a signatory association with the appeal only. It does not establish occupation, age, family, residence, contribution amount or attendance. The 27 November issue is a reprint of the same planned event (“THIS DAY”), not proof of a second act.
A request by parishioners of St Andrew’s parish in Dublin, including St Mark’s, St Peter’s and St Anne’s, sought a meeting at the Corn Exchange Rooms at 3 p.m. on 27 November 1838 to arrange collection for O’Connell’s Annuity. J. Glasco signed the appeal. This proves a signatory association with the appeal only. It does not establish occupation, age, family, residence, contribution amount or attendance. The 27 November issue is a reprint of the same planned event (“THIS DAY”), not proof of a second act. Identity assessment — newspaper candidates withdrawn, 6 October 2026
- [The Public Register, or, Freeman's Journal, 1799-09-24, p.2](https://www.newspapers.com/image/1214179229/): no longer a candidate for this profile. Public Register 24 Sep 1799: John Glasco in a continued roster under the heading COUNTY OF LONDONDERRY (list category unresolved). Several Londonderry John Glasgows are compatible. Glasgow-3927, whose 1831 census entry is itself spelled 'John Glasco', is listed first, but all remain possible.
- [Freeman's Journal and Daily Commercial Advertiser, 1816-02-28, p.3](https://www.newspapers.com/image/1050078150/): no longer a candidate for this profile. 1816 notice: Assistant Surgeon J. Glasco to be surgeon of the 59th Foot vice Hagan. The army medical roll identifies him as John Glasco, the junior of two army surgeons of that name (b. 4 Sept 1783, BA TCD, d. Dinan 1869). He has no WikiTree profile, and the three Ulster namesakes are excluded.
- [Freeman's Journal and Daily Commercial Advertiser, 1822-10-02, p.4](https://www.newspapers.com/image/1050080149/): no longer a candidate for this profile. 1822 notice: Surgeon John Glasco, from half-pay of the 59th, to be surgeon of the 60th Foot. He is the same man as the 1816 J. Glasco: John Glasco junior (b. 1783, d. Dinan 1869). No WikiTree profile.
- [Freeman's Journal and Daily Commercial Advertiser, 1825-06-21, p.3](https://www.newspapers.com/image/1050086323/): no longer a candidate for this profile. June 1825 notice: Staff-Surgeon John Glasco to be Deputy Inspector of Hospitals by brevet. This is the senior army surgeon John Glasco (Regimental Mate 1794, Staff Surgeon 1809, d. Lambeth 14 Jan 1834), not the 59th/60th surgeon. No WikiTree profile.
- [Freeman's Journal and Daily Commercial Advertiser, 1826-05-16, p.3](https://www.newspapers.com/image/1050127796/): no longer a candidate for this profile. 1826 notice: Winterscale to be surgeon of the 60th Foot vice Glasco, promoted (dated 20 April 1826). The promoted man is John Glasco junior, who joined the Hospital Staff on 20 Apr 1826. No WikiTree profile.
- [Freeman's Journal and Daily Commercial Advertiser, 1826-08-18, p.1](https://www.newspapers.com/image/1050043397/): no longer a candidate for this profile. August 1826 notice: Melville appointed to the Hospital Staff vice John Glasco, sen., who retires on half-pay. This is the senior surgeon John Glasco (Deputy Inspector by brevet 1825, d. Lambeth 1834). 'Sen.' only distinguishes him from the younger John Glasco, who joined the Staff that April. No WikiTree profile, and no kinship is stated.
- [Freeman's Journal and Daily Commercial Advertiser, 1836-12-30, p.1](https://www.newspapers.com/image/1050083649/): no longer a candidate for this profile. Freeman's Journal, 30 December 1836: Staff-Surgeon John Glasco, lately at Grenada, appointed Surgeon of the Liverpool Recruiting District. He is the army surgeon John Glasco of Drew's Roll (b. 1783, BA TCD, staff surgeon 1826-39, d. Dinan 1869), who has no WikiTree profile; none of the earlier comparison profiles fits.
- [Freeman's Journal and Daily Commercial Advertiser, 1838-08-31, p.2](https://www.newspapers.com/image/1050130719/): no longer a candidate for this profile. Freeman's Journal, 31 August 1838: 'Staff-Surgeon Glasco, Liverpool' subscribed GBP1 to the Curran Monument. This is the same army surgeon John Glasco (Drew's Roll no. 2845), then Surgeon of the Liverpool Recruiting District; he has no WikiTree profile.
- [Freeman's Journal and Daily Commercial Advertiser, 1838-11-26, p.1](https://www.newspapers.com/image/1050145535/): no longer a candidate for this profile. Freeman's Journal, 26-27 November 1838: J. Glasco signed the St Andrew's parish (Dublin) requisition for a Corn Exchange meeting to collect O'Connell's Annuity. Initial only, no occupation or address beyond the parish; not identifiable on WikiTree. The staff surgeon John Glasco was posted at Liverpool at this time and is not indicated.
- [The Drogheda Argus and Leinster Journal, 1839-09-28, p.4](https://www.newspapers.com/image/1259428783/): no longer a candidate for this profile. Drogheda Argus, 28 September 1839: Surgeon A. Sinclair, M.D., from the 25th Foot, appointed to the Hospital Staff vice John Glasco, who retires upon half-pay. Drew's Roll dates this retirement 20 September 1839; the man has no WikiTree profile.
Relationship assessment — Larne routes and Y-DNA priority, 6 October 2026
The conditional extension above is unchanged: James Glasgow-1509 as father of Adam, and so possibly of John, is a working hypothesis with no record.
The audit of 6 October 2026 withdrew the earlier routes from Larne to Alexander Glasgow-951 through older Alexander Glasgow-3904 and younger James Glasgow-3986. Alexander's probable father is John Glasgow, farmer, and any Larne connection must join above him. The Inishrush comparison therefore does not by itself connect the Lisnagaver family.
The Inishrush Y-DNA kit has no SNP result and its pedigree is unverified. In the testing recommendation of the same date it is a lower priority for a Big Y upgrade than the two Kilwaughter kits. No relationship is changed. [Recommendation](/people/glasgow-951.html#next-research).
Source findings
### Findmypast sweep — 7 October 2026
- **Adds detail to the known 1831 census entry for the probable same man (`Glasgow-3927`).** Findmypast's index of the 1831 return gives John Glasco at Innisrush, house 2, folio 41, 4 males and 4 females, and in one of its two copies **8 Presbyterians** (`IRE/CENSUS/1821-1831/154369`; duplicate `/266913` has no denomination). This supports the Presbyterian reading, which suits a Covenanter family, but it is an index, not the original.
- Negative: the Valuation Office field book for Inishrush (9 May 1832, `OL/4/1093`) indexes Adam Glascow and no John.
- Searches that found nothing: British Newspaper Archive searches for "John Glasgow"/"John Glasco" with Innisrush, Desertoghill or Garvagh, and for Glasgow with Drimbolg, found no notice of John or his family. The Drimbolg hits were all about the city of Glasgow or its ministers.
Recommended correction — title of the 1890 McKeown biography, 7 October 2026
The 1890 biography of Alexander McKeown cited in the source table (Internet Archive item [`biographicalhist00lewi_4`](https://archive.org/details/biographicalhist00lewi_4/page/668/mode/2up)) is in the *Biographical History of Page County, Iowa* (Chicago: Lewis & Dunbar, 1890), pp. 669–70, not a Ringgold and Decatur Counties volume; the table entry has been corrected. The same biography adds that Alexander and Rose (Glasgow) McKeown emigrated in 1823, spent their first year in Belmont County, Ohio, and then settled in Harrison County, Ohio, where they entered government land; Alexander died in 1853 and Rose survived until 1886. Read from the item's OCR text; a derivative county biography written while their son was living. It does not name Rose's parents.
Recorded in `research/Glasgow-3905/agent_ulster_archives.md` (16 July 2026), checked against `research/Glasgow-3905/sources/biographicalhist00lewi_4_djvu.txt`; carried into this file on 7 October 2026.
Source findings — provenance of the Drimbolg session list, recorded 17 July 2026
The [Drimbolg Reformed Presbyterian Church history](https://www.oneirishrover.com/drimbolg-reformed-presbyterian-church/) names a John Glasgow at a session at Drumlamph in 1809 and as an elder present on 19 July 1827. In the page's comment thread, replying to a descendant, the author says the attendance list came from "very old local newspapers", not from a transcript of the session book. The 1809 and 1827 attendances are therefore a derivative account with unspecific newspaper provenance: they corroborate a local Covenanter John Glasgow's church role, but should not be cited as session-book entries, and they state no relationship to Adam `Glasgow-3902`. The Drimbolg session and discipline book for 1809–59 (PRONI `MIC1C/15`) remains uninspected.
Recorded in `research/Glasgow-3905/agent_published_manuscripts.md` (17 July 2026); carried into this file on 7 October 2026.
Source findings — correspondents named in the 1847 letter, recorded 21 July 2026
The complete three-page manuscript of [John's letter of 20 March 1847](https://www.hiltner.com/mckeown/documents/John%20Glasgow%20letter%20to%20Jane%20Glasgow%20Gray%203-20-1847.pdf) was read, not only the online transcript. It contains no omitted word calling Adam, James, Hugh, Mulhollan, McCaivey, the Boggs family or Barkly John's brother, father, uncle or cousin.
- **R. Mulhollan**, who sent news of Irish settlers in western Canada and the potato failure, is strongly identified by the source audit as John's son-in-law Richardson Mulholland. The [Hiltner family page](https://hiltner.com/mckeown/getperson.php?personID=I372&tree=tree1) gives Richardson Mulholland as husband of John's daughter Lavina, and a descendant-submitted query in the [County Derry surname registry](https://www.igp-web.com/derry/surnames_for_derry.htm) says Richardson and Adamson Mulholland emigrated in spring 1832 with Lavina on the same ship. Both are derivative, not a marriage record or passenger list. Caution: `../Glasgow-3927/findings.md` cites a local-history note naming her husband Richard Mulholland and his voyage as 1833 on the *Hawsbury*; the forename and year conflict between these derivative accounts.
- **Adam**, whose letter of 27 December 1846 John had received, was alive in 1846 and so cannot be Adam `Glasgow-3902` (died 1844); John's son Adam (born 7 July 1804) is the natural identification.
- **McCaivey**, the young man who brought the James and Barkly report, was not identified under McCaivey, McCavey, McAveety or McCaffey with Inishrush, Tamlaght O'Crilly, Portglenone or Londonderry. The reading **Bogg's** (a family that travelled with the Glasgows) is uncertain and no matching family was found. A Hugh Henry named in the letter was not matched.
The letter shows John in close contact with Inishrush news but states no kinship to Adam.
Source findings — further obituary and county-history searches, recorded 21 July 2026
- James McLeod Willson's *The Covenanter*, [volume 7 (1851–52)](https://library.logcollegepress.com/Willson,+James+McLeod,+The+Covenanter,+Vol.+7+(1851-1852).pdf) and [volume 8 (1852–53)](https://library.logcollegepress.com/Willson,+James+McLeod,+The+Covenanter,+Vol.+8+(1852-1853).pdf), were searched in full text for John Glasgow, the surname, Londonderry, Guernsey and the death date. No death notice, obituary, immigration account or kin statement for John (died 23 December 1851) was found; surname hits were the Scottish city or unrelated people. Bounded negative for these two volumes.
- The full texts of the 1882 Guernsey County history and the 1895 *Portrait and Biographical Record of Guernsey County, Ohio* (OCR saved as `sources/portrait_biographical_guernsey_1895.txt`) were searched for Glasgow, McKeown and Mulholland; neither contains a biography naming John's Irish parents or siblings.
Source findings — Arthur's wife and the Portglenone congregation, recorded 21 July 2026
The 1886 obituary of Jane Neill, wife of John's son Arthur Glasgow (`Glasgow-1608`), as transcribed on her [Hiltner page](https://hiltner.com/mckeown/getperson.php?personID=I460&tree=tree1), says she joined Rev. William Kennedy McKay's Presbyterian congregation at Portglenone at about eighteen, around 1833. McKay also officiated at the 14 January 1842 marriage of Adam Glasgow's sixth daughter Nancy to John Kyle of Tyanee. This is a concrete overlap between the church networks of John's family and Adam's, but Jane was an in-law and neither notice states any Glasgow kinship. PRONI `D2594` holds McKay and First Portglenone papers (see also [NLI Sources](https://sources.nli.ie/Record/MS_UR_086186?lng=en&print=1)); no pre-1845 marriage register or member roll survives to test John and Adam.
