John Gray, Edinburgh apprenticeship, 1648 · source correction

The former attribution to John Glasgow is superseded by a page-image review on 30 September 2026. The entry appears under the printed Gray heading, not Glasgow. The filename and record link are retained for provenance. No Glasgow profile should receive this apprenticeship or its father clause.

Biography

John Gray was entered in the Edinburgh apprenticeship register on 12 January 1648 as son of the late Thomas Gray, maltman and burgess of Glasgow, with William Blackwood, merchant.[1]

Research Notes

An earlier research account misread the surname heading as Glasgow; corrected 30 September 2026. The source directly names John’s father, but his identity with an existing Gray profile remains unresolved. The 1646 Glasgow burgess entries naming James and Margaret as children of deceased Thomas Gray, maltman, strongly support the same proposed family. The 1613 Thomas Gray, maltman, son and heir of deceased Gilbert Gray, is a probable earlier occurrence, not a proved joined lifetime.[2]
