Biography

James Glasgow was plaintiff against Maxwell Lepper and Clotworthy Dobbin in a Court of Exchequer report headed Dublin, 22 June 1820. The defendants’ motion to rescind the contempt process was refused with costs and liberty for the plaintiff to continue process.[1]

Research Notes

The Belfast records form one documentary cluster. Bradshaw's 1819 directory lists James Glasgow, grocer, 20 Rosemary Street; its trades list has him as a wholesale grocer at 2 Rosemary Street. By 1824 (Pigot) no Glasgow trader is listed in Belfast. In March 1828 the shop and stores at No. 32 Rosemary Street 'formerly occupied by Mr James Glasgow' were offered for sale: same street, name and shop-and-stores use, though the house numbers in the transcriptions differ. The 1822-23 leaf-tobacco notices are dated Belfast and direct buyers to Mr James M'Master's, North Street (James M'Master & Son were Belfast merchants in 1819); tobacco is a wholesale grocer's stock-in-trade. This 1820 plaintiff was suing Maxwell Lepper (spirit merchant, Donegall Street) and Clotworthy Dobbin (brewer and spirit merchant, Smithfield), both Belfast traders in the 1819 directory. So he too is most probably the Belfast wholesale grocer, though the report gives no residence or trade. No WikiTree James Glasgow has any Belfast trading record. Glasgow-3986 (Larne merchant) is the only candidate with a commercial occupation, but all his records are in Larne and he still held a Larne freehold in Dec 1830, so he stays a possible comparison, not a match. A new profile is needed for 'James Glasgow, wholesale grocer and tobacco dealer, Rosemary Street, Belfast, fl. 1819-1823', with a research note on Glasgow-3986.
