How parent leads are calculated
Automated leads use birth surnames—not married surnames—as parental eligibility, role-specific biological age limits, bounded and approximate-date uncertainty, household chronology, specific time-aware localities, mapped distance, tenancy succession, migration destinations and sex-aware Scottish naming positions across generations. People already attached as the subject's parents stay in the identity summary and are excluded from this alternative-candidate list, regardless of relationship confidence. The main calibration uses clues available on disconnected profiles; existing parent and sibling links are retained as comparison context rather than treated as transferable evidence. Common ordered names and grandparent-to-child echoes receive a small non-zero weight, so a John or James match can support several independent criteria without producing a lead alone. Rare names, repeated bearers and bundles across otherwise distinct branches receive substantially more weight according to catalogue frequency. An exact migration place is weighted by its rarity and repetition across both branches; a shared destination country is worth only one point. Extra weight is added only when at least three independent clue types converge: naming, locality, specific migration, household chronology or collateral networks. Sparse profiles retain a clearly labelled chronology-only fallback instead of disappearing. Countries, states, counties and research clusters do not count as a shared locality, and fallback, broad representative or kin-inferred coordinates are excluded from distance scoring. Shared descendant profiles are removed before branch-name comparison. A candidate already recorded as a parent-in-law is excluded. A confident or independently supported parent is treated as settled; uncertain and unassessed attachments remain open to alternative comparison. A different linked parent, an uncle/aunt or grandparent path, and a matching existing child profile prevent an alternative from being classified as a strong direct-parent lead until the underlying tree conflict or duplicate is resolved. Familiar forms such as Bessie are normalised. Surname remains an eligibility filter worth zero points.
Naming customs, shared farms and occupations are circumstantial. Children, spouses and collateral relatives may be missing, and tree-derived family networks are not independent evidence. Scores rank research leads; they do not prove parentage.

How duplicate leads are calculated
Dates are eligibility gates, not merely deductions: chronologically impossible people are excluded. Dates, places, spouses, parent certainty and children's profiles and names are then compared. A high score is a prompt to inspect records, not a merge recommendation.

Record-bearing passages
- Biography James Glasgow was christened on 21 May 1738 in Covington and Thankerton, Lanarkshire, Scotland. He was the son of George Glasgow and Agnes Williamson. "Scotland Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950," database, FamilySearch (record XTLX-GQN (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XTLX-GQN), accessed 11 February 2020), James Glasgow, christened 21 May 1738, Covington and Thankerton, Lanarkshire; son of George Glasgow and Agnes Williamson.
- No record has yet been found that proves what happened to James after his christening. Possible Adult Records A James Glasgow was recorded as the father of Robert Glasgow, christened on 17 February 1760 in Wandell and Lamington. Robert's mother was Marion Saidler. "Scotland Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950," database, FamilySearch (record XTFT-KJ9 (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XTFT-KJ9), accessed 16 September 2021), Robert Glasgow, christened 17 February 1760, Wandell and Lamington, Lanarkshire; son of James Glasgow and Marion Saidler.
- A James Glasgow married Mary Scott on 20 June 1766 in Wandell and Lamington. "Scotland Marriages, 1561-1910," database, FamilySearch (record XT1J-9QW (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XT1J-9QW), accessed 11 February 2020), marriage of James Glasgow and Mary Scott, 20 June 1766, Wandell and Lamington, Lanarkshire.
- George Glasgow, christened on 7 May 1769 in Wandell and Lamington. "Scotland Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950," database, FamilySearch (record XTFT-2J1 (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XTFT-2J1), accessed 16 September 2021), George Glasgow, christened 7 May 1769, Wandell and Lamington, Lanarkshire; son of James Glasgow and Mary Scot. Research Notes The 1766 marriage and the 1769 christening appear to concern the same James Glasgow. Both records are from Wandell and Lamington, and both name his wife as Mary Scott or Mary Scot.
- The 1760 record may also concern the same man. This would suggest that Marion Saidler died, or that the earlier relationship ended, before James married Mary Scott in 1766. No supporting burial or marriage record has yet been found.
- The James christened in 1738 is a reasonable candidate for the man recorded at Wandell and Lamington because:
James Glasgow (1736-), christened in 1736, was associated with Kilwinning, Ayrshire, and is said to have moved to Cookstown, County Tyrone, Ireland, around 1750. This conflicts with the later records in Wandell and Lamington.
- James Glasgow (1730-), born around 1730 in Kirknewton and East Calder, was associated with Katharine Rule and their daughter Marion, born in 1751. No record currently connects him to Wandell and Lamington, Marion Saidler or Mary Scott.
- None of these points proves that the records concern the same man. The parish records do not give James's age, parents, occupation or exact residence.
The original register images should be checked for further details, particularly James's residence, occupation, marital status and witnesses. Sources

A James Glasgow married Mary Scott on 20 June 1766 in Wandell and Lamington. "Scotland Marriages, 1561-1910," database, FamilySearch (record XT1J-9QW (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XT1J-9QW), accessed 11 February 2020), marriage of James Glasgow and Mary Scott, 20 June 1766, Wandell and Lamington, Lanarkshire. James and Mary had a son: * George Glasgow, christened on 7 May 1769 in Wandell and Lamington. The 1760 record may also concern the same man. This would suggest that Marion Saidler died, or that the earlier relationship ended, before James married Mary Scott in 1766. No supporting burial or marriage record has yet been found. The James christened in 1738 is a reasonable candidate for the man recorded at Wandell and Lamington because: * Covington and Thankerton is close to Wandell and Lamington. * He would have been about 22 in 1760 and 28 in 1766. * His father was named George, and James and Mary named their son George. Other possible men named James Glasgow were reviewed, but currently appear less likely: * James Glasgow (1736-), christened in 1736, was associated with Kilwinning, Ayrshire, and is said to have moved to Cookstown, County Tyrone, Ireland, around 1750. This conflicts with the later records in Wandell and Lamington. * James Glasgow (1730-), born around 1730 in Kirknewton and East Calder, was associated with Katharine Rule and their daughter Marion, born in 1751. No record currently connects him to Wandell and Lamington, Marion Saidler or Mary Scott. None of these points proves that the records concern the same man. The parish records do not give James's age, parents, occupation or exact residence. The original register images should be checked for further details, particularly James's residence, occupation, marital status and witnesses. Both records are from Wandell and Lamington, and both name his wife as Mary Scott or Mary Scot. The 1760 record may also concern the same man. This would suggest that Marion Saidler died, or that the earlier relationship ended, before James married Mary Scott in 1766. No supporting burial or marriage record has yet been found.
