Source findings — Kilclone memorial inscription, transcribed 1892

An inscription at Kilclone, County Meath, reported in 1892 by the Association for the Preservation of the Memorials of the Dead in Ireland, records that James Glasco erected the memorial for his brothers Richard and William, who died on 1 November 1738, and for Patrick Glasco, "father of" James, who died in May 1754 aged 60. Searchable transcription: Meath History Hub, Memorials of the Dead Journal. Seen as a nineteenth-century transcription reproduced online, not a photograph of the stone.

Assessment: a proved nuclear family. Patrick died in May 1754 aged 60, so was born about 1694 (calculated; the inscription gives no birthplace). He was father of James (Glasgow-3924) and, through James's "brothers" wording, of Richard (Glasgow-3925, died 1 November 1738 aged 10) and William (Glasgow-3926, died the same day, age printed with a query, about 7). His wife is not named. No record connects this Meath family to the Dublin Glasco watchmakers, the Rathdowney family or any Ulster cluster. Surviving Kilcloon Catholic registers begin only in 1836.

  • Minor: Findmypast's Ireland, Memorials of the Dead index has only two Glasco entries for Kilclone, Patrick (IRE/MEMDEAD/008202) and James (IRE/MEMDEAD/008199), both on image IRE/MEMDEAD/VOL2/00000210. The index gives no age or date for Patrick and gives James a death year of 1736, which agrees with neither date in the published inscription (1 November 1738 for Richard and William; May 1754 for Patrick). It is very probably an indexing error; the published text should be preferred until the image is read.
  • Searches that found nothing: no other Glasco/Glasgow record of any kind is indexed for Kilclone or for County Meath before 1800 (searches glasco_meath, place_kilclone). BNA snippet searches for "glasco" with "kilclone" returned nothing, and with "meath" returned only nineteenth-century items (a Thomas Glasco among occupiers of part of Kilbrew, County Meath, in a 1817 Dublin Evening Post sale notice, BL/0000435/18170607/033; Owen Glasco of "Baddinstown", 1841, already known). Neither is linked to this family.

- **Minor:** Findmypast's *Ireland, Memorials of the Dead* index has only two Glasco entries for Kilclone, **Patrick** (`IRE/MEMDEAD/008202`) and **James** (`IRE/MEMDEAD/008199`), both on image `IRE/MEMDEAD/VOL2/00000210`.
