OBITUARY. MR. WILLIAM GLASGOW.
In the person of Mr. William Glasgow, who died at Sydney on Tuesday last, there passed away one who, for many years, was closely identified with the history of Narandera and one for whose sterling character, and honest and straightforward manliness,all classes felt a sincere admiration and respect.
Born at Belfast on the 11th July, 1851, Mr. Glasgow's parents emigrated to America when he was an infant, and he spent his early life in Philadelphia,
U.S.A. In 1878 he came to Australia, where he obtained employment with the contractors who were building the main southern line from Sydney,and was employed on that portion between Harden and Wagga, and also
worked on the southwestern line from Junee to Hay, entering into
permanent employment with the Railway Department at Narrandera in 1881, in which year he married Miss Ross, of Junee, and took up his residence at Narrandera, continting his connection with the Railway Department, until 1910,when in consequence of failing health, he retired from the service. Just about this time he lost his devoted wife, and felt the loss very keenly. After her death his health began to fail, and two years ago
he went to Sydney, where after a painful illness, he passed away peacefully on Tuesday last. During his residence at Narandera he took a deep interest in the local hospital, and was a member of the committee for 25 years; and was also an alderman of the Municipal Council of Narandera for a period of ten years.He was also an esteemed member of the Methodist Church for over 20 years, and, as lay preacher, circuit steward and Sunday school
superintendent, was much respected and beloved by members and adherents of that body. His sound commonsense, his absolute honesty and straightforwardness,and his fine manly character, made his services in any public capacity valued, and won him the esteem of all with whom he came into contact. The history of his connection with the I.O.O.F., of which he was an enthusiastic and honored member, is almost unique. He joined the Southern Lodge of the I.O.O.F. in Philadelphia. U.S.A.. in 1875, and was
a continuous member of the Society till his death. He was a foundation member of Lodge No.17, Narandera, instituted on 17th December. 1881, and held every office in the Lodge. On several occasions he was N.G. of the Narandera Lodge, representative of the Lodge to the Grand Lodge at Sydney, and was also Grand Chaplain to the Grand Lodge. His family numbered three sons and five daughters, all of whom were born in Narandera, and of whom a daughter (Nelly) and a son Norman, are dead: the latter dying about 3 years ago at the age of 17, and the former 11 years ago at about the same age.The eldest son, Carl, served his time as articled clerk to Messrs. Kershaw, Matthews, and Lane, solicitors at Narandera, and after passing his final examinations about five years ago, was taken into partnership by that firm and is now practising in Sydney. The eldest daughter, Anne, is married to Mr. Albert Denyer of Lugar Brae, Mimosa; his second daughter, Louisa, is teacher at the Public School at Clovelly; and the third daughter, Ruth, is nursing at Woollongong Hospital.One of his sons, Will,. enlisted in the Australian Light Horse in July 1915, and served for 18
months in Egypt, when he was invalided home. After undergoing an operation he again went into camp at Seymour, and is now awaiting orders to go to the front again. An impressive funeral service was held at the Methodist Church,by the Rev. S. H. Hobbins, and the remains were followed to the cemetery by members of the I.O.O.F., hospital committee, and Municipal Council, where they were laid in rest by those of his wife and children in the Methodist portion of the cemetery.
