Biography
George Glasgow, gentleman, is reported appointed Second Lieutenant, vice Second Lieutenant Barnes, promoted. Published 24 September 1774. Regiment is not stated in the bounded appointment paragraph. No identity bridge joins this Second Lieutenant appointment to the 1771 First Lieutenant or later Royal Artillery reports; completed service and family remain unproved. A separate reported appointment names George Glasgow, gentleman. Existing chronological comparisons remain weak; regiment and personal identity are unproved. Do not join this lower-rank appointment to the 1771 First Lieutenant solely by surname or assume a demotion.[1]
Research Notes
A separate reported appointment names George Glasgow, gentleman. Existing chronological comparisons remain weak; regiment and personal identity are unproved. Do not join this lower-rank appointment to the 1771 First Lieutenant solely by surname or assume a demotion.
Bounded public catalogue comparison only. A missing regiment is an open question, not an invented unit.
Glasgow-1070: Estimated c. 1719 birth allows an older adult, with no regiment or commission identifier. Glasgow-4165: Uncertain birth before 1722 permits an older adult; no individual service or regiment bridge. Glasgow-1529: Estimated c. 1769 birth would make him about five in 1774 if approximately correct, a strong chronology tension. Estimate not independently checked; weak/unlikely lead.
Inspect the contemporaneous Gazette appointment and regimental commission lists to identify the unit and officer before comparing the Royal Artillery career.

DCB: George Glasgow, cadet RA 2 Apr 1771, 'gazetted a second lieutenant on 8 Sept. 1774'; the notice published 24 Sept 1774 names a George Glasgow, gentleman, appointed Second Lieutenant - same name, rank and date (regiment not printed in the paragraph, but the Ordnance-style 'vice ... promoted' wording and the DCB date agree). Identity with the DCB officer: strong. It also explains why this is not the 1771 First Lieutenant (a different, senior RA George). No WikiTree profile exists for Lt-Gen George Glasgow RA (d. London 28 Oct 1820; wife Margaret Green; nine children, eight born in Canada). Glasgow-1529 (christened 7 May 1769 Wandel & Lamington, married Lilias Robertson) cannot have held these ranks - unlikely. Glasgow-1070 (bapt. 1719, father of a Lanarkshire family) and Glasgow-4165 (b. by 1722, Irvine family) have no artillery link and are far too old for a 1771 cadet - unlikely. A new profile draft is warranted, built on the DCB entry and Kane/Askwith's list.
