Biography

William Glascoe is among prisoners reported sentenced to transportation after Old Bailey trials, for stealing a sack of malt from a warehouse, valued in the newspaper at £4 10s. Strong candidate case match to William Glascow, Old Bailey session 16 April 1760, t17600416-27. The newspaper’s “Yesterday” and values differ from the proceedings; the session date is not asserted as the exact individual trial day. Sentence does not prove an actual voyage or Maryland arrival. [1]

Research Notes

The newspaper and the primary Old Bailey case are strongly associated; no origin, family or later Maryland identity is proved.

The matching proceedings t17600416-27 name William Glascow, theft from Benjamin Smith’s warehouse on 15 March: a sack valued 6d and malt 10s; verdict Guilty, 4s 10d, followed by Transportation. Preserve the newspaper’s different £4 10s value and relative trial date. Locate actual transportation and subsequent records before linking the 1775 Maryland notice.

Old Bailey t17600416-27, William Glascow: stole a hempen sack and four bushels of malt from Benjamin Smith's warehouse in Durham Yard (Strand) on 15 March 1760. Smith says the prisoner 'got his bread under me', and the prisoner said he was drunk and confessed before Justice Cox. Verdict: Guilty 4s 10d; transportation. That makes him a London labourer working for a corn dealer. WikiTree searches for William Glasgow born 1700-1742 return only Scottish (Kirknewton, Kilwinning, Stevenston, Irvine, Ayrshire, Dundonald) and Irish (Larne, Kilwaughter, Tyrone, Moneymore) men, none with a London presence. Glascow, Glascoe and Glasco searches returned nothing further.
