He served with the famous 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War. He was the husband of Lydia Ballard. From at least age 14 on, he lived in the household of the Quaker Friends Cloud family and worked on the Cloud family farm(s) in Pocopson, Pennsylvania.
