Coverage, survival & limitations

Availability depends on the particular repository, locality, date range and record series. We have not established complete coverage for this collection. Follow each provider link for its holdings and access terms; a missing result is not proof of absence.

Reading the evidence: an index, transcript, provider search page and original image are different sources. A recorded image link does not mean its reading or identity match is confirmed. Inspect the assessment and source page before changing a family relationship. Repository guides checked 4 October 2026.

Reviewed newspaper notices

2 distinct notices from 2 retained pages, earliest first. Reprints of the same notice are merged; 2 pages have saved inline excerpts. Open a notice for its clipping, reading and profile assessment.

How to read these notices

Cards lead with the person named in the notice; profile candidates are assessed separately. Birth cutoffs labelled “by c.” are estimates, usually assuming an adult professional was at least 18; open the birth note for the basis. Event groups are broad navigation aids built from each notice’s record type. A relationship filter identifies family wording in the notice, not a proved match to a WikiTree family.

What the notice says

Thirteen hogsheads of leaf tobacco for sale; samples at Mr James M’Master’s, North Street; James Glasgow;27 May 1823.

Evidence and identity limits

Repeated name, trade and contact support a consolidated seller account. M’Master’s premises are a commercial contact, not a proved home or owned property. No age, family or link to William Glasgow the grocer is stated. Chronologically compatible regional James profiles remain leads; no profile is selected. Identity review (6 October 2026): May 1823 notice: thirteen hogsheads of leaf tobacco, with samples at Mr James M'Master's, North Street, signed James Glasgow. He is the same Belfast tobacco seller. No WikiTree profile fits. No compatible WikiTree profile after a duplicate search for: James Glasgow.

Bounded crop from the provider-viewer screenshot, showing the cause description and complete jury list with James Glasgow. Yellow search highlight is viewer UI, not print. Issue/page verified from provider metadata; crop omits issue header. Party localities are not the juror’s residence; no court venue is asserted. What the notice says

The report states “The following were the Jury” and includes James Glasgow in its list.

Evidence and identity limits

Confirms a person named James Glasgow served on the jury in the reported cause/cross-cause. The named parties’ localities (Newry, Ballymena, Lisburn) are not the juror’s residence. No court heading or venue is visible in the reviewed passage. This 1823 occurrence is compatible with, but not identified as, the James Glasgow in the 1828 Belfast petty jury report or 1820 Exchequer plaintiff. No profile assignment. Identity review (6 October 2026): November 1823 report naming James Glasgow among a jury in a cause involving parties from Newry, Ballymena and Lisburn. It is a bare juror listing: the venue is not visible and no residence is given, so he cannot be identified.

What the notice says

Position 2 (place): A letter dated Maghera, 24 June 1823 recounts an Orangemen chase and violence. The writer says the party had to give up the chase at Rasharkin; the passage discusses local Orangemen and the law, not a person surnamed Glasgow. The visible column begins mid-sentence, but the Rasharkin clause and following account are legible. Classify the highlighted word as a place; this crop does not establish the full article context or exclude other page occurrences.

Evidence and identity limits

Original-position final review: the quoted Glasgow/Rasharkin passage(s) on this page are classified as place, vessel, or other context, not a Glasgow personal surname. This is a passage-level result, not a claim that the entire page contains no relevant name.

Who this may be

No profile assigned; identity remains unresolved.

Place, vessel or other-surname OCR match; excluded from surname evidence.
