Coverage, survival & limitations

Availability depends on the particular repository, locality, date range and record series. We have not established complete coverage for this collection. Follow each provider link for its holdings and access terms; a missing result is not proof of absence.

Reading the evidence: an index, transcript, provider search page and original image are different sources. A recorded image link does not mean its reading or identity match is confirmed. Inspect the assessment and source page before changing a family relationship. Repository guides checked 4 October 2026.

How to read these notices

Cards lead with the person named in the notice; profile candidates are assessed separately. Birth cutoffs labelled “by c.” are estimates, usually assuming an adult professional was at least 18; open the birth note for the basis. Event groups are broad navigation aids built from each notice’s record type. A relationship filter identifies family wording in the notice, not a proved match to a WikiTree family.

What the notice says

At Belfast Royal Academical Institution College Department awards on Saturday 28 April 1832, James Glasgow of the Institution received the silver medal for the General Certificate examinations in Mathematics and Natural Philosophy.

Evidence and identity limits

The 1832 medal award remains valid and supports the Institution mathematics sequence. Separate it from the later teacher-resignation notice; the candidate assessment of Glasgow-1780 can remain based on the full sequence. Identity review (6 October 2026): 28 April 1832 RBAI College Department awards: James Glasgow of the Institution received the silver medal for the General Certificate examinations in Mathematics and Natural Philosophy. This is James McClure Glasgow (Glasgow-1780): the Fasti gives him 'G.C. 1832' and the Dictionary of Ulster Biography says he gained medals in mathematics and natural philosophy.

Who this may be

[b. 1805-05-27; d. 1890-06-30] · silver medallist, General Certificate examinations
Why this candidate?

Record-level bridge: Fasti no. 1123 (James Glasgow, b. near Clough 1805, brother of Adam Dickey Glasgow, minister of Castledawson) states 'ed. O.C.B.: G.C. 1832' - the same examination and year as this medal; DUB independently says he 'gained medals in mathematics and natural philosophy' at RBAI. Award type, subject and year agree; no competing James Glasgow at RBAI found.
