Coverage, survival & limitations

Availability depends on the particular repository, locality, date range and record series. We have not established complete coverage for this collection. Follow each provider link for its holdings and access terms; a missing result is not proof of absence.

Reading the evidence: an index, transcript, provider search page and original image are different sources. A recorded image link does not mean its reading or identity match is confirmed. Inspect the assessment and source page before changing a family relationship. Repository guides checked 4 October 2026.

Reviewed newspaper notices

How to read these notices

Cards lead with the person named in the notice; profile candidates are assessed separately. Birth cutoffs labelled “by c.” are estimates, usually assuming an adult professional was at least 18; open the birth note for the basis. Event groups are broad navigation aids built from each notice’s record type. A relationship filter identifies family wording in the notice, not a proved match to a WikiTree family.

What the notice says

William Glasgow Esq., Cookstown, retired from business; presentation at Imperial Hotel, Belfast, 1 January: silver ewer and cake basket.

Evidence and identity limits

Retired merchant Glasgow-3814 is a strong compatible candidate; kinship to 1858 partners remains unproved. Identity review (6 October 2026): Report (Belfast News-Letter, 4 Jan 1856) of a presentation at the Imperial Hotel, Belfast, to William Glasgow Esq. of Cookstown on his retirement from business. This is probably the draper and retired merchant William Glasgow-3814; no kin are named.

Who this may be

[b. c. 1796; d. 1883-07-04] · retiring Cookstown businessman
Why this candidate?

Three independent agreements. (1) Slater's 1846 lists one William Glasgow trading in Cookstown: linen and woollen draper, William Street. (2) Glasgow-3814's 1883 civil death return (Loy, Cookstown; aged 87; bachelor) calls him a retired merchant. (3) A retirement in 1856 fits a man born c.1796. Competitors are weaker: Glasgow-1675 died in Ohio in 1855; 1737 and 1694 were Killycurragh farmers; the Drapersfield partner William was still trading in 1858-1866. No relative is named, so this is not strong.
