Coverage, survival & limitations

Availability depends on the particular repository, locality, date range and record series. We have not established complete coverage for this collection. Follow each provider link for its holdings and access terms; a missing result is not proof of absence.

Reading the evidence: an index, transcript, provider search page and original image are different sources. A recorded image link does not mean its reading or identity match is confirmed. Inspect the assessment and source page before changing a family relationship. Repository guides checked 4 October 2026.

How to read these notices

Cards lead with the person named in the notice; profile candidates are assessed separately. Birth cutoffs labelled “by c.” are estimates, usually assuming an adult professional was at least 18; open the birth note for the basis. Event groups are broad navigation aids built from each notice’s record type. A relationship filter identifies family wording in the notice, not a proved match to a WikiTree family.

What the notice says

A War Office notice dated 15 May 1795 names Captain George Glasgow, artillery, among captains appointed to be majors in the army.

Evidence and identity limits

Published 21 May 1795; original War Office heading explicitly 15 May 1795. Both the Captains heading and final to be Majors in the army line are preserved. This announces an army-major appointment; technical brevet classification or completed service is not independently established. Exact name and artillery context with progressive reported ranks support a provisional career study; individual continuity across the 22-year interval remains unproved. No checked existing profile is identified. The possible later chronological match George-1529 does not prove the early lieutenant’s identity. The 1774 unassigned Second Lieutenant notice remains a separate subject. Identity review (6 October 2026): May 1795: Captain George Glasgow, artillery, made Major in the army. Probably Lt-Gen George Glasgow RA (DCB); the earlier RA George is a possible alternative. No WikiTree profile. No compatible WikiTree profile after a duplicate search for: Captain George Glasgow, artillery (to be Major in the army).

What the notice says

Gentleman Cadet William Allen Glasgow is announced as second lieutenant in the Corps of Royal Engineers, vice Lefebvre, promoted, dated 1 October 1795.

Evidence and identity limits

The notice is under Office of Ordnance, October 9; its preceding all dated 1 October 1795 applies through Dated as above. Both William and Allen are printed personal forenames across the line break. This is an announced commission, not family proof, an age statement or independently checked service history. A separately documented William Allen Glasgow is announced as an engineer officer. Existing exact full-name catalogue entries are later-born men. Compatible William-only candidates remain possible because a missing middle name is not an exclusion; none has a Royal Engineers identity bridge. Identity review (6 October 2026): Oct 1795: Gentleman Cadet William Allen Glasgow commissioned Second Lieutenant, Royal Engineers. The RE roll gives 2nd Lt 1 Oct 1795, Lt 18 Aug 1797, died at Martinique 3 Jan 1798. No WikiTree profile; the earlier candidates lived into the 1840s-50s. No compatible WikiTree profile after a duplicate search for: William Allen Glasgow.
