Reported events, notices, advertisements and letters. OCR matches need visual checking; place names, vessels and matches to other surnames are excluded from Glasgow surname evidence.
Availability depends on the particular repository, locality, date range and record series. We have not established complete coverage for this collection. Follow each provider link for its holdings and access terms; a missing result is not proof of absence.
Reading the evidence: an index, transcript, provider search page and original image are different sources. A recorded image link does not mean its reading or identity match is confirmed. Inspect the assessment and source page before changing a family relationship. Repository guides checked 4 October 2026.

How to read these notices
Cards lead with the person named in the notice; profile candidates are assessed separately. Birth cutoffs labelled “by c.” are estimates, usually assuming an adult professional was at least 18; open the birth note for the basis. Event groups are broad navigation aids built from each notice’s record type. A relationship filter identifies family wording in the notice, not a proved match to a WikiTree family.

What the notice says
John Glasgow, labourer, Millrig, is named among voluntary subscriptions in the parish of Kirkliston.
Evidence and identity limits
The heading establishes voluntary subscriptions and the Kirkliston section. It does not prove payment, a military enlistment, an individual amount, religion or family. Identity remains unresolved. Compatible candidates have chronology only, without an individual place, occupation or family bridge. These three John contexts may involve different men; the two Allegheny reprints are one list. Identity review (6 October 2026): July 1798 Kirkliston voluntary subscriptions: 'John Glasgow, labourer, Millrig'. He is very probably John Glasgow (Glasgow-159), agricultural labourer, married at Kirkliston in 1785, with children baptised there 1786-1797.
[b. c. 1761; d. ?] · subscriberWhy this candidate?
Name + occupation + parish + date agree independently: Glasgow-159 is John Glasgow, agricultural labourer (occupation from daughter Janet's 1874 death record), married Agnes Gray at Kirkliston 19 Sept 1785, with children Thomas (1786), Mary (1788), Janet (1790) and a child (1797) in the Kirkliston register - so he was a Kirkliston labourer in 1798. Millrig itself is not yet on the profile. The prior candidates are weaker: Glasgow-4090 is recorded in Desertoghill, Co. Londonderry in the 1796 flax list with a family there - unlikely; Glasgow-3927 is an 1831 Inishrush householder - unlikely; Glasgow-2964 (Edinburgh, 1841) has no Kirkliston link. What the notice says
James Glasgow, son to David Glasgow, is named in the Kelso parish militia ballot list accompanying a Jedburgh notice dated 29 September 1798.
Evidence and identity limits
Roxburgh County Militia notice dated Jedburgh, 29 September 1798, names Kelso parish selections by ballot, instructing attendance at Kelso on 11 October or finding a substitute. Selection is not proof of completed service. David’s weaving descriptor appears stockfweaver; exact lexical expansion remains uncertain. The original does not call him junior. The original explicitly describes James as son of David Glasgow. James-1222 and David-1218 are compatible regional/chronological candidates, but neither identity is proved; their existing Wiki Tree father link does not independently identify this newspaper family. No certainty upgrade or live parent change is justified. Identity review (6 October 2026): Oct 1798 Roxburgh militia ballot, Kelso parish: 'James Glasgow, son to David Glasgow, [stocking-]weaver'. This is James Glasgow (Glasgow-1222, b. 25 Dec 1777 Kelso) and his father David (Glasgow-1218); the existing father-son link can be made confident.
[b. 1777-12-25; d. 1853-06-21] · balloted militiaman (son)Why this candidate?
Name + father's name + parish + age agree. Glasgow-1222 was born 25 Dec 1777 at Kelso to David Glasgow and Janet Hood; in Sept 1798 he was 20, inside the 19-23 age band balloted under the 1797 Scottish Militia Act. He is the only James son of a David in the Roxburghshire Glasgow families on WikiTree (James 'Glasgoue-1', b.1746, is David's brother, far too old). [b. before 1744-04-13; d. ?] · father; weaver (stocking-weaver?) at KelsoWhy this candidate?
David Glasgow, bapt. Stitchel 1744, married Janet Hood; children Andrew (1767), John (1768), James (1777, Kelso), William (1786, Kelso). The only David on WikiTree with a Kelso family (other Davids are in Livingston, Ayrshire, Edinburgh, Ireland). Notice adds his weaving trade.
