Coverage, survival & limitations

Availability depends on the particular repository, locality, date range and record series. We have not established complete coverage for this collection. Follow each provider link for its holdings and access terms; a missing result is not proof of absence.

Reading the evidence: an index, transcript, provider search page and original image are different sources. A recorded image link does not mean its reading or identity match is confirmed. Inspect the assessment and source page before changing a family relationship. Repository guides checked 4 October 2026.

How to read these notices

Cards lead with the person named in the notice; profile candidates are assessed separately. Birth cutoffs labelled “by c.” are estimates, usually assuming an adult professional was at least 18; open the birth note for the basis. Event groups are broad navigation aids built from each notice’s record type. A relationship filter identifies family wording in the notice, not a proved match to a WikiTree family.

What the notice says

John Glasgow near Oxford is listed among people taking in subscriptions for De Jure Regni; advertisement dated 22 May 1766.

Evidence and identity limits

The notice explicitly says subscriptions are taken in by the named people: John is a listed subscription collector/agent, not a proved paying subscriber. Oxford is preserved without assigning a modern jurisdiction; locality comparison is qualified. The earlier Nottingham/Chester County/near-Oxford entries fit Glasgow-2870 as a probable candidate; Glasgow-2871 remains possible. This is a qualified regional documentary cluster, potentially more than one John. A postal list does not prove the addressee alive: the elder’s recorded May 1769 death does not absolutely exclude posthumous mail in 1771. No parent, spouse or child is proved by these notices. Identity review (6 October 2026): John Glasgow 'near Oxford' is one of the agents taking subscriptions for De Jure Regni (May 1766). Both the West Nottingham storekeeper (probably Glasgow-2871) and an East Nottingham landholder John (taxed 1768-1775) lived near Oxford, so identity stays possible.

Who this may be

[b. c. 1738; d. 1792-04-03] · local subscription agent for De Jure Regni, near Oxford
Why this candidate?

A subscription agent is typically a storekeeper or other local man of business, which favours the West Nottingham storekeeper John (taxed storekeeper 1765 and 1767; probably Glasgow-2871). But the Chester County tax index also has a John Glascow/Glasgow landholder in East Nottingham 1768-1775, and East Nottingham adjoins Oxford, so 'near Oxford' does not single out the West Nottingham man. Glasgow-2870 remains a possible namesake without distinguishing evidence.
