Coverage, survival & limitations

Availability depends on the particular repository, locality, date range and record series. We have not established complete coverage for this collection. Follow each provider link for its holdings and access terms; a missing result is not proof of absence.

Reading the evidence: an index, transcript, provider search page and original image are different sources. A recorded image link does not mean its reading or identity match is confirmed. Inspect the assessment and source page before changing a family relationship. Repository guides checked 4 October 2026.

Reviewed newspaper notices

How to read these notices

Cards lead with the person named in the notice; profile candidates are assessed separately. Birth cutoffs labelled “by c.” are estimates, usually assuming an adult professional was at least 18; open the birth note for the basis. Event groups are broad navigation aids built from each notice’s record type. A relationship filter identifies family wording in the notice, not a proved match to a WikiTree family.

What the notice says

John Glasgow, in West Nottingham, Chester County, and William Glasgow are separate addressees in the Charles-Town, Maryland, post-office list headed 1 October 1771.

Evidence and identity limits

Postal-office and address context retained; an addressee is not proof of residence, letter collection, occupation, household or continued life. Nearby addressees and their localities are separate. The original heading says Charles-Town, Maryland, not Anne Arundel County. Sydney George is a separate next addressee; Cecil County accompanies Sydney, not a newly established address for William. The earlier Nottingham/Chester County/near-Oxford entries fit Glasgow-2870 as a probable candidate; Glasgow-2871 remains possible. This is a qualified regional documentary cluster, potentially more than one John. A postal list does not prove the addressee alive: the elder’s recorded May 1769 death does not absolutely exclude posthumous mail in 1771. No parent, spouse or child is proved by these notices. Identity review (6 October 2026): Charles-Town (Cecil County), Maryland letter list, 1 October 1771: John Glasgow in West Nottingham, Chester County, and a separate William Glasgow. Two Johns were taxed in West Nottingham in 1771 (landholder and inmate), so John is only possibly Glasgow-2871; Glasgow-2870 (d. 1769) is now unlikely. William has no WikiTree profile; the Cecil County William named among the children of James Glasgow Sr. (d. 1784) in Cecil probate is a plausible but unproved identity. No compatible WikiTree profile after a duplicate search for: William Glasgow.

Who this may be

[b. c. 1738; d. 1792-04-03] · letter addressee, West Nottingham, Chester County
Why this candidate?

1771 Chester County tax index: John Glasko, West Nottingham, 70 acres, landholder, and John Glascow, West Nottingham, inmate. The landholder is the continuing holding probably belonging to Glasgow-2871 (see group 39404812); the inmate is another adult John (possibly the Moneymore John, Glasgow-4027, whose family arrived in Nottingham c.1769 per Robert Glasgow's pension R4057 - he was in Peters Twp, Cumberland Co., by 1779). Glasgow-2870 is unlikely: recorded dead May 1769, and two living same-name residents of the township are available.
