Coverage, survival & limitations

Availability depends on the particular repository, locality, date range and record series. We have not established complete coverage for this collection. Follow each provider link for its holdings and access terms; a missing result is not proof of absence.

Reading the evidence: an index, transcript, provider search page and original image are different sources. A recorded image link does not mean its reading or identity match is confirmed. Inspect the assessment and source page before changing a family relationship. Repository guides checked 4 October 2026.

How to read these notices

Cards lead with the person named in the notice; profile candidates are assessed separately. Birth cutoffs labelled “by c.” are estimates, usually assuming an adult professional was at least 18; open the birth note for the basis. Event groups are broad navigation aids built from each notice’s record type. A relationship filter identifies family wording in the notice, not a proved match to a WikiTree family.

What the notice says

A Newbern report dated 31 December names the Honorable James Glasgow as appointed Secretary of State by the North Carolina legislature.

Evidence and identity limits

Two issues dated 25 January 1792 reprint the same report. The reported Thursday last is not converted into an exact appointment date; year context suggests the preceding December. No family is stated. Provider collection label retained; contemporary masthead title has not been independently checked. Glasgow-634 is a probable candidate for the explicit North Carolina Secretary of State records, matching the existing sourced public study. The Masonic officer, Dobbs candidate, Contentney and Raleigh addressee records form a compatible regional cluster; cross-record identity is inferred and remains qualified. Name, titles and locality do not prove spouse, parents or children. Identity review (6 October 2026): A Newbern report of 31 December 1791, reprinted in Pennsylvania in January 1792, names the Hon. James Glasgow appointed Secretary of State by the North Carolina legislature. This is a strong match to Glasgow-634.

Who this may be

[b. c. 1735; d. 1819-11-17] · appointed North Carolina Secretary of State by the legislature (Dec 1791)
Why this candidate?

The notice names the exact single-holder state office documented for Glasgow-634 from 1777 to 1798, with periodic legislative re-election (UNCA: three-year terms). The office is a record-level bridge, and there is no competitor. Identity context as in group 604128613: Glasgow-634 is the documented NC Secretary of State 1777–1798, Dobbs/Glasgow County resident and militia colonel; WikiTree has no other adult NC James Glasgow (son Glasgow-2492, b. 1776, is the only other).
