Reported events, notices, advertisements and letters. OCR matches need visual checking; place names, vessels and matches to other surnames are excluded from Glasgow surname evidence.
Availability depends on the particular repository, locality, date range and record series. We have not established complete coverage for this collection. Follow each provider link for its holdings and access terms; a missing result is not proof of absence.
Reading the evidence: an index, transcript, provider search page and original image are different sources. A recorded image link does not mean its reading or identity match is confirmed. Inspect the assessment and source page before changing a family relationship. Repository guides checked 4 October 2026.

How to read these notices
Cards lead with the person named in the notice; profile candidates are assessed separately. Birth cutoffs labelled “by c.” are estimates, usually assuming an adult professional was at least 18; open the birth note for the basis. Event groups are broad navigation aids built from each notice’s record type. A relationship filter identifies family wording in the notice, not a proved match to a WikiTree family.

What the notice says
James Glasgow, Muscadine Mathews and John Gray Blount are named signatories for holders of western land entries in a petition dated Raleigh, 23 December 1796.
Evidence and identity limits
Two newspapers reprint one petition. The excerpt states land claims, a request for justice and conditional proposals concerning land possession; these are petitioners’ claims, not a judicial finding, a proved land grant to James individually or a family link. Provider collection title retained; contemporary masthead title not independently verified. Identity review (6 October 2026): A petition dated Raleigh, 23 December 1796, by holders of western land entries is signed for them by James Glasgow, Muscadine Mathews and John Gray Blount. A US Senate committee report of March 1797 refers to 'the petition of J. Glasgow and others, relative to lands entered in the office of John Armstrong', which identifies the James Glasgow signer as Glasgow-634 (probable). The co-signers are not kin. No compatible WikiTree profile after a duplicate search for: Muscadine Mathews.
[b. c. 1735; d. 1819-11-17] · signatory for holders of western land entries (petition, Raleigh, 23 Dec 1796)Why this candidate?
The UNC Asheville Speculation Lands biography of Secretary of State James Glasgow cites a US Senate committee report of 1 March 1797 on 'the petition of J. Glasgow and others, relative to lands entered in the office of John Armstrong, Esq. and since ceded to the United States'. That is the same subject as this petition of holders of western (Armstrong office) land entries. The place (Raleigh), date, subject and the Secretary's documented role in the western military land-warrant system all agree. The Senate report as cited gives only the initial 'J.', so the grade is probable rather than strong. Identity context as in group 604128613: Glasgow-634 is the documented NC Secretary of State 1777–
· co-signatory of the petition (non-kin associate)Why this candidate?
WikiTree Blount-181 is John Gray Blount (1752 Pitt County – 1833 Washington, Beaufort County, NC), the well-known North Carolina merchant and western-land speculator. The distinctive full name, the state, the period and the western land subject all agree. The notice states no kinship with Glasgow.

What the notice says
James Glasgow, Esq., 4, is an addressee in a Raleigh post-office letters list headed April 1, reprinted in April–May 1797 issues.
Evidence and identity limits
Three issues repeat one list. The marker 4 is preserved without interpreting it as age or independently proving a letter count. The heading prints no year in the bounded excerpt; 1797 is the issue context. Neither residence, collection, household nor continued life is proved. Identity review (6 October 2026): A Raleigh post-office list headed 1 April, printed April–May 1797, includes James Glasgow, Esq. (marker 4). This is a probable match to Glasgow-634.
[b. c. 1735; d. 1819-11-17] · addressee, Raleigh post office (Apr 1797)Why this candidate?
'Esq.' and Raleigh, the seat of the Secretary of State's office, fit Glasgow-634, then in his last full year as Secretary, and no rival NC James Glasgow is known. The marker '4' is not interpreted. Identity context as in group 604128613: Glasgow-634 is the documented NC Secretary of State 1777–1798, Dobbs/Glasgow County resident and militia colonel; WikiTree has no other adult NC James Glasgow (son Glasgow-2492, b. 1776, is the only other).
