John was born around 1851, likely in Roanoke County, Virginia. He is the son of Joseph Glasgow and Lucy Gilbert. 

On 25 Jan 1874, in Bedford, Virginia, he married Lucy (Brown) Marshall (1848-1886, daughter of Aaron & Sally Brown). They had no known children.

Lucy died in 1886. He married again on 14 Sep 1887, in Roanoke, Virginia, to Caroline Wright (b. 1861, daughter of Thomas Wright & Susan Jeffries). Marriage 2: Library of Virginia; Richmond, VA; Virginia Marriages, 1853-1935. - They had the following known children.

He married again on 3 Aug 1904, in Lynchburg, Virginia, to Sarah Smith (b. 1869, daughter of Henry Wade Smith & Mina). She died prior to the 1910 census.
