About Mary

Mary, daughter of William Glasgow and Elizabeth, died on 18 October 1844 aged 37, supporting birth about 1807. The 1843 bride Mary Glasgow-4181 remains a possible duplicate; her probable census identification has a conflicting 1843 death year.

Monument and dates

The family monument transcription, published in Armorial Sculptured Stones of the County Antrim, Ulster Journal of Archaeology, second series 6 (1900), p.47, names Mary as daughter of William and Elizabeth and gives death 18 October 1844 aged 37. Birth about 1807 is calculated from that age. The uncertain Larne death place is inferred, not explicitly stated by the inscription.

Possible duplicate: the 1843 bride

Mary Glasgow-4181, the bride in the 1843 settlement, is a possible duplicate of this Mary. Her probable census identification gives death in autumn 1843 aged 37, conflicting with this Mary’s monument death 18 October 1844 aged 37. Separate profiles remain provisional. The new bride’s uncertain attachment to Hugh Glasgow-4180 does not displace this Mary’s monument-proved father William Glasgow-3324; if the women are identical, the Hugh hypothesis must be withdrawn.

What the research found

Summary of the research

Overall conclusion

Mary, daughter of William Glasgow and Elizabeth, died on 18 October 1844 aged 37 according to the Larne monument transcription, supporting birth about 1807. The earlier after 1783 birth boundary is superseded. Mary Glasgow-4181, the intended bride in 1843, remains a possible duplicate: her probable census match died autumn 1843 aged 37. Resolve the identity and date conflict before merging; retain this Mary’s documented father William.

What the records show

Source findings — First Larne sexton (1829) and 1831 Larne census, 21 September 2026

First Larne Presbyterian Church's published history (A Short History) says a Mary Glasgow was church sexton in October 1829, with accommodation valued at £2 rent, quarterly payments and a payment at each communion. Derivative church history; identity with this Mary, daughter of William and Elizabeth, is possible only.

The surviving 1831 census extract for Larne town (Virtual Record Treasury, CEN-1831-3-29-9-3) lists female-headed Glasgow households of Jane (no males, five females), Anne (no males, two females) and Mary (no males, four females). The return gives numbers only, no ages or relationships; it does not identify which Mary.

Recorded in research/Glasgow-3989/larne-attachment-2026-09-21.wiki (21 September 2026); carried into this file on 7 October 2026.

Identity and family

Possible duplicate: the 1843 bride — 21 September 2026

Mary Glasgow-4181, the bride in the 1843 settlement, is a possible duplicate of this Mary. Her probable census identification gives death in autumn 1843 aged 37, conflicting with this Mary’s monument death 18 October 1844 aged 37. Separate profiles remain provisional. The new bride’s uncertain attachment to Hugh Glasgow-4180 does not displace this Mary’s monument-proved father William Glasgow-3324; if the women are identical, the Hugh hypothesis must be withdrawn.

Recommended correction — vital dates, 6 October 2026

Hold both sets of dates until the duplicate question is settled. Mary Glasgow-4181's dates come from the 1851 census household of John McGavock (a retrospective death table: wife Mary, aged 37, died autumn 1843), and her identification with the February 1843 bride is provisional. Mary Glasgow-3989's come from the Larne monument as published in 1900: "MARY who died 18th Octr 1844 aged 37 years". The one-year difference in the death year, at the same age, is part of the open question whether they are one woman.
