John became a widower in 1858 when Christian died at the age of forty-three. Only a few months after their marriage, Helen became involved in a criminal case. On 4 October 1859, Helen Glasgow, identified as the wife of John Glasgow, miner of Airdrie, and with maiden surname Murray, appeared before the High Court of Justiciary in Glasgow on a charge of theft and previous conviction. She was found guilty in terms of her own confession and sentenced to four years' penal servitude.
