Coverage, survival & limitations

Scottish Old Parish Registers

OPRs cover 1553–1854 and contain Church of Scotland baptisms/births, banns/marriages and deaths/burials. Survival and registration are uneven; some parishes begin late or have no surviving records.

Scottish statutory BMD registers

Compulsory civil registration began in 1855. Statutory births, deaths and marriages are index-linked digital images through ScotlandsPeople, with online privacy cutoffs; certificates or official extracts are distinct from indexes.

Reading the evidence: an index, transcript, provider search page and original image are different sources. A recorded image link does not mean its reading or identity match is confirmed. Inspect the assessment and source page before changing a family relationship. Repository guides checked 4 October 2026.

Scotland’s People OPR deaths to 1700

One exact match is already cited. Two entries are probable matches to existing children; the 1641 Jon has two competing candidates. The Linlithgow entry exposes a misread other-details field. Janet at Polwarth and the unnamed Dirleton subject remain unlinked. Four existing profiles have new qualified notes or a correction queued. These are user-supplied official index results, not newly inspected register images; collection coverage does not establish all historical deaths. Dates are index-event dates until the original distinguishes death, burial or another entry.

----- GLASGOWGLASGOW1 Jul 1688 · 705/10 / 183Dirleton—Unidentified — HOLDThe deceased has no indexed forename, age or relationship. No existing person can be identified from this row; do not create a speculative unnamed child.Read OPR 705/10/183 and its neighbouring entries for the subject and event type.
----- GLASGOWJOHN GLASGOW14 Feb 1670 · 668/70 / 653LinlithgowGlasgow-3056Existing citation needs correctionAlready cited as John’s death, but JOHN GLASGOW is in the other-details field and the deceased forename is blank. John may be an associated person. His assigned death remains uncertain.Correct the biography; retain the existing date/location uncertain while OPR 668/70/653 is inspected. Do not invent a child.
ELIZABETH GLASGOW-----16 Mar 1657 · 754/10 / 30PolwarthGlasgow-3362Probable match — new evidenceSame name and parish as the child recorded 17 August 1656, seven months earlier. No age or parent in this death/burial row proves the match.Add the probable identification in prose; inspect OPR 754/10/30 before assigning an exact death.
JANET GLASGOWTOD / WILLIAM GLASGOW25 Dec 1675 · 754/10 / 113Polwarth—Unlinked identity — HOLDThe index may identify Janet Tod and a spouse or associate William Glasgow. Tod as birth surname and the relationship to William require the original. Live searches found no compatible Janet profile. This does not identify William as the father of the 1656/1658 Polwarth children.Read OPR 754/10/113 for the exact name and kin term. Compare the Polwarth household without attaching Janet to Glasgow-2462 or Glasgow-1605.
JON GLASGOWJON GLASGOW23 Aug 1641 · 684/60 / 24DuddingstonGlasgow-1559, Glasgow-3014Competing candidates — HOLDThe children recorded in April 1639 and January 1638 both fit the name and parish. The latter’s possible 1638 death would exclude him if confirmed. No age or kin term distinguishes the 1641 subject.Add the candidate comparison as a research note; inspect OPR 684/60/24 and 60/16 before matching or creating a person.
ROBERT GLASGOW-----17 Jan 1647 · 684/60 / 47DuddingstonGlasgow-1156Existing match — already recordedExact name, date, parish and reference already appear in the live profile as a burial. This batch supplies no new fact requiring a fresh WikiTree update.Retain the supporting index and existing relationship uncertainties; do not reopen an update merely for a confirming citation.
JON GLASGOWJOHNE GLASGOW15 Jan 1638 · 684/60 / 16DuddingstonGlasgow-3014Probable match — new evidenceThe child recorded on 11 January 1638 in the same parish is a strong candidate four days later. The other-details name supports comparison but is not an explicit father statement.Add a probable identification in prose; inspect OPR 684/60/16 for identity and event type before entering an exact death.
