Reported events, notices, advertisements and letters. OCR matches need visual checking; place names, vessels and matches to other surnames are excluded from Glasgow surname evidence.
Availability depends on the particular repository, locality, date range and record series. We have not established complete coverage for this collection. Follow each provider link for its holdings and access terms; a missing result is not proof of absence.
Reading the evidence: an index, transcript, provider search page and original image are different sources. A recorded image link does not mean its reading or identity match is confirmed. Inspect the assessment and source page before changing a family relationship. Repository guides checked 4 October 2026.

How to read these notices
Cards lead with the person named in the notice; profile candidates are assessed separately. Birth cutoffs labelled “by c.” are estimates, usually assuming an adult professional was at least 18; open the birth note for the basis. Event groups are broad navigation aids built from each notice’s record type. A relationship filter identifies family wording in the notice, not a proved match to a WikiTree family.

What the notice says
James Glasgow, styled Clerk, is appointed chaplain to the garrison of Edinburgh Castle by a royal commission reported read in the presbytery.
Evidence and identity limits
Full notice retained with Scotland section heading, Edinburgh dateline, preceding sentence, full appointment sentence and following paragraph start. Printed long-s glyph in Glasſgow is f-shaped and can produce OCR Glafgow; normalized surname reading Glasgow. 'Yesterday' refers to the Edinburgh Oct. 21 dateline; identity with the 1738 notice is not asserted. The 1737 and 1738 notices are a probable same-officeholder sequence, not a proved profile identity. Clerk is a clerical style, not evidence of a separate clerk occupation. Neither relative date is calculated from the newspaper issue date. Identity review (6 October 2026): 1737 Edinburgh report that James Glasgow, Clerk, was commissioned chaplain to the Edinburgh Castle garrison. Fasti and the Kilbirnie Fasti entry identify the Castle minister as James, son of Rev. John Glasgow of Kilbirnie and Margaret Scott: Glasgow-1140, strong.
