James Glasgow was minister of Edinburgh Castle; he was baptised at Kilbirnie on 17 March 1700 and died on 9 February 1746, aged about 48. The Fasti Ecclesiae Scoticanae names James, minister of Edinburgh Castle, among the children of John Glasgow (Glasgow-1073), minister of Kilbirnie, by Margaret Scott (Scott-40313), agreeing with his Kilbirnie baptism to John Glasgow and Margaret Scot. The Fasti records his M.A. at Glasgow (1718), royal commission as chaplain to the Castle garrison (7 July 1737) and ordination (14 February 1738); newspapers of 1737 and 1738 report the commission and ordination. A story giving him an Irish career rested on forged documents and is excluded.

James Glasgow, minister of Edinburgh Castle, is this profile. The 1737 newspaper report of a royal commission making James Glasgow chaplain to the Edinburgh Castle garrison, and the 1738 report that James Glasgow, probationer, was ordained minister of the Castle, describe the man whom the Fasti records as JAMES GLASGOW, M.A. (Glasgow, 10 March 1718), commissioned by George II on 7 July 1737, ordained 14 February 1738, died 9 February 1746 aged about 48. The Fasti entry for his father's parish of Kilbirnie names him: John Glasgow, minister of Kilbirnie, married (2) Margaret Scott "and had issue — James, min. of Edinburgh Castle". That agrees with the Kilbirnie baptism of James, 17 March 1700, son of John Glasgow and Margaret Scot, which is this profile's recorded birth, and with the 1722 letter from his half-brother Robert of Paddockholm to "his brother James Glasgow, student of divinity at Glasgow". The 5 October assessment that left the Castle notices unidentified is superseded.

Father Glasgow-1073 (Rev. John Glasgow of Kilbirnie) and mother Scott-40313 (Margaret Scott) are attached on WikiTree as uncertain. The Fasti statement naming James of Edinburgh Castle as their son, combined with the matching Kilbirnie baptism, supports marking both links confident. The half-brother relationship to Glasgow-1075 (Robert of Paddockholm, by the first wife Jean Cunningham) is already represented through the shared father.

Identity assessment — claimed Irish career excluded, before 8 September 2026A former story gave this James Glasgow an Irish career.

A former story gave this James Glasgow an Irish career. It does not concern him. The supposed settler in Ireland was James Crawfurd, brother of Viscount Garnock, who had been mistaken for Robert Glasgow's brother James. The Ireland lines added to the 1720 letter and the alleged 1725 remittance were exposed as forgeries in the Crawfurd peerage case. Neither document concerns James Glasgow. The genuine 1722 letter places James at Glasgow as a student of divinity, which fits the Kilbirnie baptism and the Edinburgh Castle identity above.

James Glasgow, minister of Edinburgh Castle, is this profile. The 1737 newspaper report of a royal commission making James Glasgow chaplain to the Edinburgh Castle garrison, and the 1738 report that James Glasgow, probationer, was ordained minister of the Castle, describe the man whom the Fasti records as JAMES GLASGOW, M.A. (Glasgow, 10 March 1718), commissioned by George II on 7 July 1737, ordained 14 February 1738, died 9 February 1746 aged about 48. The Fasti entry for his father's parish of Kilbirnie names him: John Glasgow, minister of Kilbirnie, married (2) Margaret Scott "and had issue — James, min. of Edinburgh Castle". That agrees with the Kilbirnie baptism of James, 17 March 1700, son of John Glasgow and Margaret Scot, which is this profile's recorded birth, and with the 1722 letter from his half-brother Robert of Paddockholm to "his brother James Glasgow, student of divinity at Glasgow". The 5 October assessment that left the Castle notices unidentified is superseded.

Identity assessment — claimed Irish career excluded, before 8 September 2026

A former story gave this James Glasgow an Irish career. It does not concern him. The supposed settler in Ireland was James Crawfurd, brother of Viscount Garnock, who had been mistaken for Robert Glasgow's brother James. The Ireland lines added to the 1720 letter and the alleged 1725 remittance were exposed as forgeries in the Crawfurd peerage case. Neither document concerns James Glasgow. The genuine 1722 letter places James at Glasgow as a student of divinity, which fits the Kilbirnie baptism and the Edinburgh Castle identity above.
