Coverage, survival & limitations

Availability depends on the particular repository, locality, date range and record series. We have not established complete coverage for this collection. Follow each provider link for its holdings and access terms; a missing result is not proof of absence.

Reading the evidence: an index, transcript, provider search page and original image are different sources. A recorded image link does not mean its reading or identity match is confirmed. Inspect the assessment and source page before changing a family relationship. Repository guides checked 4 October 2026.

How to read these notices

Cards lead with the person named in the notice; profile candidates are assessed separately. Birth cutoffs labelled “by c.” are estimates, usually assuming an adult professional was at least 18; open the birth note for the basis. Event groups are broad navigation aids built from each notice’s record type. A relationship filter identifies family wording in the notice, not a proved match to a WikiTree family.

What the notice says

Robert Glasgow, master of the snow John and Archibald, of Glasgow, is reported arriving in distress during a Virginia-to-Glasgow passage.

Evidence and identity limits

One distress report preserved in three issues, not three masters. Later reprints give St John’s, Antigua, 15 February. The passage describes gale damage, leakage and lightning; Glasgow is also the vessel’s designation/port, not the master’s birthplace. The preceding Swanton vessel’s provisions and urine story in the Pennsylvania page belongs to a different vessel. No family or link to the 1751 defendant established. Identity review (6 October 2026): One 1754 distress report (three printings) of Robert Glasgow, master of the snow John and Archibald of Glasgow, on a Virginia-to-Glasgow passage. WikiTree already has a documentary profile for exactly this shipmaster, Glasgow-2867, built on the Maryland Gazette printing of the same Antigua report; the notice adds no kin. Glasgow-2474 (Irvine shipmaster 1738) is a possible earlier/later identity of the same man (merge question), not a separate match.

Who this may be

[b. c. 1736 (estimated); d. after 1754] · master of the snow John and Archibald, of Glasgow
Why this candidate?

Glasgow-2867 is a profile whose biography is specifically 'Robert Glasgow was master of the snow John and Archibald, a vessel described in 1754 as of Glasgow', citing The Maryland Gazette no. 466 (11 Apr 1754) reprint of the St John's, Antigua, 15 Feb 1754 report and the Dublin Gazette reprint - the same report as these Pennsylvania Gazette/Gloucester Journal/Berrow's printings (same vessel, master, voyage Virginia-Glasgow, gale of 24 Jan 1754, lightning, Antigua). Name + unique vessel command + same dated event = record-level identity. Caveat: 2867's parents (William Glasgow-1026 and Ann McCook-217, status code 10, not confident) and 'death 1754 (after)' are not supported by this or any ins
