How parent leads are calculated

Automated leads use birth surnames—not married surnames—as parental eligibility, role-specific biological age limits, bounded and approximate-date uncertainty, household chronology, specific time-aware localities, mapped distance, tenancy succession, migration destinations and sex-aware Scottish naming positions across generations. People already attached as the subject's parents stay in the identity summary and are excluded from this alternative-candidate list, regardless of relationship confidence. The main calibration uses clues available on disconnected profiles; existing parent and sibling links are retained as comparison context rather than treated as transferable evidence. Common ordered names and grandparent-to-child echoes receive a small non-zero weight, so a John or James match can support several independent criteria without producing a lead alone. Rare names, repeated bearers and bundles across otherwise distinct branches receive substantially more weight according to catalogue frequency. An exact migration place is weighted by its rarity and repetition across both branches; a shared destination country is worth only one point. Extra weight is added only when at least three independent clue types converge: naming, locality, specific migration, household chronology or collateral networks. Sparse profiles retain a clearly labelled chronology-only fallback instead of disappearing. Countries, states, counties and research clusters do not count as a shared locality, and fallback, broad representative or kin-inferred coordinates are excluded from distance scoring. Shared descendant profiles are removed before branch-name comparison. A candidate already recorded as a parent-in-law is excluded. A confident or independently supported parent is treated as settled; uncertain and unassessed attachments remain open to alternative comparison. A different linked parent, an uncle/aunt or grandparent path, and a matching existing child profile prevent an alternative from being classified as a strong direct-parent lead until the underlying tree conflict or duplicate is resolved. Familiar forms such as Bessie are normalised. Surname remains an eligibility filter worth zero points.

Naming customs, shared farms and occupations are circumstantial. Children, spouses and collateral relatives may be missing, and tree-derived family networks are not independent evidence. Scores rank research leads; they do not prove parentage.

How duplicate leads are calculated

Dates are eligibility gates, not merely deductions: chronologically impossible people are excluded. Dates, places, spouses, parent certainty and children's profiles and names are then compared. A high score is a prompt to inspect records, not a merge recommendation.

Record-bearing passages

  • Biography John was born about 1790.
  • John Glasgow was reportedly born on 7 June 1783 and baptised on 6 July 1783 at Bathgate, Linlithgowshire, Scotland. The indexed baptism names his father as Patrick Glasgow; the connected family records identify his mother as Elizabeth Dick. "Scotland, Births and Baptisms, 1564–1950," database, FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X151-7QY : accessed 28 July 2026), Patrick Glasgow in entry for John Glasgow, 6 July 1783. The connected FamilySearch profiles report John's birth as 7 June 1783 and identify his mother as Elizabeth Dick.
  • Patrick appears as Peter Glasgow in the records of the later children. Given the same wife, location and continuous sequence of baptisms, Peter and Patrick were almost certainly the same man.
  • John is identified here as the John Glasgow who later lived at Canongate, Edinburgh, and worked as a shop porter. The identification is strong but remains circumstantial, as no record has yet been found explicitly linking the Bathgate baptism to the Canongate household.
  • John married or partnered with Jean Bryce before 1806. The indexed records of their children identify them as the parents. No marriage or proclamation entry has yet been found. Children The known children of John Glasgow and Jean Bryce were:
  • Peter Glasgow, recorded on 5 April 1806. "Scotland, Births and Baptisms, 1564–1950," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F315-BDS : accessed 28 July 2026), John Glasgow in entry for Peter Glasgow, 5 April 1806.

    • Peter Glasgow, recorded on 18 March 1808. "Scotland, Births and Baptisms, 1564–1950," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F315-BD7 : accessed 28 July 2026), John Glasgow in entry for Peter Glasgow, 18 March 1808. The reuse of the name probably indicates that the first Peter had died, although no burial has yet been identified.
    • John Glasgow, baptised on 10 April 1810. The surname was indexed as Glasgon. "Scotland, Presbyterian & Protestant Church Records, 1736–1990," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QP7T-8M5G : accessed 28 July 2026), entry for John Glasgon and John Glasgon, 10 April 1810.

    • Thomas Newlands Glasgow, baptised on 22 April 1821. The event appears in two FamilySearch indexes. "Scotland, Presbyterian & Protestant Church Records, 1736–1990," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QPW8-1JDJ : accessed 28 July 2026), entry for Thomas Newlands Glasgow and John Glasgow, 22 April 1821.
  • FamilySearch also currently identifies Jane Glasgow, later Soutter, born about 1828 and died in 1858, as a daughter. A civil-registration index dated 30 August 1858 associates Jane Soutter with John Glasgow, but the original registration should be checked before the precise relationship is treated as fully proved. "Scotland, Civil Registration, 1855–1875, 1881, 1891," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X95R-4LYD : accessed 28 July 2026), entry for Jane Soutter and John Glasgow, 30 August 1858. 1841 census On the night of 6 June 1841, John was living at Hume's Close, Canongate, Edinburgh. "Scottish General Register Office: 1841 Census Returns database," FreeCEN (https://www.freecen.org.uk/search_records/5a151c00f4040b9d6e2838ef : viewed 12 September 2024), John GLASGOW, Hume's Close, Canongate, Midlothian, Scotland; citing 1841 Census, The National Archives, HO 107/685, folio 141, page 16.
  • {| class="wikitable" ! Name ! Age ! Occupation ! Birth county |- | John Glasgow | 56 | Shop porter | Outside Midlothian |- | Jean Glasgow | 55 | | Outside Midlothian |- | Thomas Glasgow | 20 | Porter | Midlothian |- | Peter Newland | 8 | | Outside Midlothian |}
  • The 1841 census did not record household relationships, so Peter Newland's precise relationship to John and Jean is unknown.
  • If John was born on 7 June 1783, he was 57 on census night and would turn 58 the following day. His recorded age of 56 was therefore one year low. This is a minor discrepancy and does not materially weaken the identification.
  • Bathgate was in Linlithgowshire rather than Midlothian, so the reported birthplace outside the census county is consistent with the proposed baptism.
  • Neither John nor Jean has yet been securely identified in the 1851 census. Their dates and places of death remain unknown. Research NotesIdentification with the Bathgate baptism The following evidence supports identifying the Bathgate child with the Canongate shop porter:
  • The reported birth year is within one year of the age recorded in 1841.

    • Bathgate was outside Midlothian, matching the census response.
    • The names Peter, John, Elizabeth, Margaret and William recur in both the Bathgate family and John's Canongate family.
    • John's first recorded son was named Peter, and the name was reused after the presumed death of the first child.
    • The family moved through a coherent West Calder–Bathgate–Edinburgh geographical corridor.
    • No separate adult life has yet been identified for the Bathgate John.
  • The remaining weakness is the absence of a marriage, census, occupation or other adult record explicitly stating that the Bathgate-born John became the Canongate porter. Parents and siblings The 1783 baptism calls John's father Patrick Glasgow. The later baptisms call him Peter Glasgow.
  • {| class="wikitable" ! Child ! Record date ! • Peter and Patrick were commonly interchanged in Scottish records. More importantly, the continuous baptism sequence with the same wife and locality makes it highly unlikely that two separate fathers were involved. Proposed paternal grandparents Peter or Patrick Glasgow is very likely the Peter Glasgow baptised on 10 October 1762 at West Calder, Midlothian, son of John Glasgow and Margaret Mill. "Scotland, Births and Baptisms, 1564–1950," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VQ4T-5P2 : accessed 28 July 2026), Peter Glasgow, baptised 10 October 1762 at West Calder, Midlothian, son of John Glasgow and Margaret Mill; duplicate indexed parent entry (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VQ4T-5PL : accessed 28 July 2026), John Glasgow in entry for Peter Glasgow.
  • Peter was about 20 or 21 when John was born in 1783.

    • West Calder and Bathgate are neighbouring parts of the same wider district.
    • Peter and Elizabeth's family repeatedly used names found among John and Margaret's children.
  • The baptism of Peter directly proves his parents. The remaining inferential step is identifying the West Calder child with the adult Peter or Patrick who married Elizabeth Dick and had children at Bathgate.
  • {| class="wikitable" ! Child ! Baptism |- | Peter Glasgow | 10 October 1762 |- | Andrew Glasgow | 26 August 1764 |- | Margaret Glasgow | 28 September 1766 |- | Agnes Glasgow | 15 July 1770 |- | Issobel Glasgow | 30 October 1773 |- | Janet Glasgow | 9 December 1776 |}

  • An 1800 marriage index names an unidentified Glasgow in the entry for Alexander Hunter. This may relate to one of the daughters, but the supplied extract does not preserve the bride's forename and should not yet be assigned to a specific person. "Scotland, Marriages, 1561–1910," database, FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYSW-FB4 : accessed 28 July 2026), Glasgow in entry for Alexander Hunter, 1800. Possible earlier paternal line The FamilySearch profile for the John Glasgow who married Margaret Mill is:
  • A leading working hypothesis identifies him with John Glasgow baptised on 28 March 1740 at Irvine, Ayrshire, son of George Glasgow and Margaret Martin.
  • {| class="wikitable" ! Generation ! Person ! Status |- | Earlier ancestor | John Glasgow, born 30 August 1661 at Edinburgh; husband of Agnes Spark | Connected-tree relationship |- | Son | George Glasgow, baptised 20 November 1687; husband of Margaret Martin | Connected-tree relationship |- | Grandson | John Glasgow, baptised 28 March 1740 at Irvine | Leading proposed identity of the John who married Margaret Mill |- | Great-grandson | Peter Glasgow, baptised 10 October 1762 at West Calder | Direct baptism naming John Glasgow and Margaret Mill |- | Target | John Glasgow, born 7 June 1783 at Bathgate | Baptism names Patrick Glasgow; mother identified as Elizabeth Dick |}
  • These patterns are supportive but not proof. The required bridge remains a marriage, testament, kirk-session entry, sasine, tax record or other evidence showing that John of Irvine became the husband of Margaret Mill at West Calder.
  • The connected descendant report also places Janet Isobel Mill as the wife of Thomas Glasgow, born in 1725, another descendant of John Glasgow and Agnes Spark. The recurrence of the Mill surname may indicate repeated marriage between the same family networks, but no relationship between Janet Isobel Mill and Margaret Mill has yet been established. WikiTree CC7 descendant report generated from the connected descendants of Archibald Glasgow, supplied 28 July 2026. The report reflects current WikiTree connections and is a research aid rather than independent proof. Possible connection to Archibald Glasgow Archibald Glasgow married Isobell Neulands and was named with her in a Glasgow property transaction dated 21 May 1551. WikiTree contributors, "Archibald Glasgow (about 1533)," WikiTree (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Glasgow-1097 : accessed 28 July 2026), citing a property protocol dated 21 May 1551.
  • The descent from Archibald is not proved. The early connected tree contains chronological conflicts, including Archibald's reported death preceding the reported birth of a supposed son. Each generation must therefore be verified independently before the line is attached as established ancestry. Newlands connections The Newlands surname appears repeatedly around John and his descendants:
  • John's son was baptised as Thomas Newlands Glasgow in 1821.

    • Peter Newland, aged eight, lived in John and Jean's household in 1841.
    • The second Peter Glasgow, recorded in 1808, is currently identified as the Peter who later married Agnes Newlands.
    • A later son was also named Thomas Newlands Glasgow.
  • The linked family records identify this as the death of Peter, son of John Glasgow and Jean Bryce. The original certificate should be retained or examined to confirm the full parental details and Peter's spouse.
  • The use of Newlands as Thomas's middle name in 1821 predates Peter's later marriage to Agnes Newlands. The connection between the families therefore existed before that marriage.
  • a nearer Newlands ancestor not yet identified;

    • repeated intermarriage between the families;
    • a close collateral relationship;
    • a longstanding family or occupational association.
  • The earlier marriage of Archibald Glasgow and Isobell Neulands demonstrates that the surnames were associated centuries earlier, but it does not prove that this particular Newlands connection descended from Isobell. Duplicate and unresolved attached records Two undated FamilySearch birth or baptism entries name John Glasgow in connection with Peter Glasgow. "Scotland, Births and Baptisms, 1564–1950," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XTR8-FF3 : accessed 28 July 2026), John Glasgow in entry for Peter Glasgow; event date not supplied in the index extract. "Scotland, Births and Baptisms, 1564–1950," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XTRD-321 : accessed 28 July 2026), John Glasgow in entry for Peter Glasgow; event date not supplied in the index extract.
  • These probably duplicate the dated 1806 or 1808 entries and should not be treated as additional children unless the underlying records show otherwise. Conflicting identities Several similarly aged men named John Glasgow have been considered:
  • The John Glasgow baptised at Eccles in 1786, son of Robert Glasgow and Agnes Whitehead, was a joiner with a separate wife and family and is not this man.

    • The John Glasgow who died at Rothesay in 1863 was a porter of a similar age, but his wife was recorded as Jane Scott and his parents as Robert Glasgow and Janet Brown. He was probably another man.
    • The Wiston and Roberton John born in 1784 remains an age match, but no later evidence connects him with Jean Bryce or Canongate.
  • The Bathgate baptism remains the strongest identification. Possible 1819 criminal record A John Glasgow was tried at Edinburgh on 28 July 1819 for falsehood, fraud and wilful imposition. National Records of Scotland, trial papers for John Glasgow, prisoner in the tolbooth of Edinburgh, 28 July 1819; reference JC26/1819/68; related precognition AD14/19/119.
  • {| class="wikitable" ! Item ! Details |- | Accused | John Glasgow, prisoner in the tolbooth of Edinburgh |- | Crime | Falsehood, fraud and wilful imposition |- | Trial | 28 July 1819 |- | Verdict | Guilty in terms of his own confession |- | Sentence | Transportation for seven years |- | NRS reference | JC26/1819/68 |}
  • There is no evidence identifying the prisoner as the husband of Jean Bryce. The baptism of Thomas Newlands Glasgow in Edinburgh in April 1821 makes the identification problematic unless the transportation sentence was not carried out, was commuted or was otherwise altered.
  • The original trial papers may provide the accused's age, occupation, residence, relatives or physical description. Research priorities

    • Obtain the original parish-register image for John's baptism at Bathgate on 6 July 1783.
    • Obtain the original West Calder baptism image for Peter Glasgow on 10 October 1762.
    • Search for the marriage or proclamation of Peter or Patrick Glasgow and Elizabeth Dick.
    • Search for the marriage or proclamation of John Glasgow and Margaret Mill.
    • Trace John Glasgow baptised in 1740 at Irvine through marriage, tax, kirk-session, testament, sasine and burial records.
    • Compare the witnesses and residences in the West Calder and Bathgate baptisms.
    • Examine the original baptisms of John and Jean's children for John's occupation, residence and witnesses.
    • Locate John and Jean in the 1851 census or establish whether either died between 1841 and 1851.
    • Obtain Peter Glasgow's complete 1865 death registration.
    • Identify Peter Newland, aged eight in 1841, through baptism and later census records.
    • Treat the line beyond John Glasgow and Margaret Mill as a working hypothesis until each generation is supported by original records. Sources

Biography
John was born about 1790.

John Glasgow was reportedly born on 7 June 1783 and baptised on 6 July 1783 at Bathgate, Linlithgowshire, Scotland.

Patrick appears as Peter Glasgow in the records of the later children. Given the same wife, location and continuous sequence of baptisms, Peter and Patrick were almost certainly the same man.

John is identified here as the John Glasgow who later lived at Canongate, Edinburgh, and worked as a shop porter. The identification is strong but remains circumstantial, as no record has yet been found explicitly linking the Bathgate baptism to the Canongate household.

John married or partnered with Jean Bryce before 1806. The indexed records of their children identify them as the parents. No marriage or proclamation entry has yet been found.
Children
The known children of John Glasgow and Jean Bryce were:

* Peter Glasgow, recorded on 5 April 1806. "Scotland, Births and Baptisms, 1564–1950," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F315-BDS : accessed 28 July 2026), John Glasgow in entry for Peter Glasgow, 5 April 1806.
* Peter Glasgow, recorded on 18 March 1808.
* John Glasgow, baptised on 10 April 1810. The surname was indexed as Glasgon. "Scotland, Presbyterian & Protestant Church Records, 1736–1990," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QP7T-8M5G : accessed 28 July 2026), entry for John Glasgon and John Glasgon, 10 April 1810.

FamilySearch also currently identifies Jane Glasgow, later Soutter, born about 1828 and died in 1858, as a daughter.
1841 census
On the night of 6 June 1841, John was living at Hume's Close, Canongate, Edinburgh. The 1841 census did not record household relationships, so Peter Newland's precise relationship to John and Jean is unknown.

If John was born on 7 June 1783, he was 57 on census night and would turn 58 the following day. His recorded age of 56 was therefore one year low. This is a minor discrepancy and does not materially weaken the identification.

Bathgate was in Linlithgowshire rather than Midlothian, so the reported birthplace outside the census county is consistent with the proposed baptism.

Neither John nor Jean has yet been securely identified in the 1851 census. Their dates and places of death remain unknown.
Research NotesIdentification with the Bathgate baptism
The following evidence supports identifying the Bathgate child with the Canongate shop porter:

* The reported birth year is within one year of the age recorded in 1841.
* Bathgate was outside Midlothian, matching the census response.
* The names Peter, John, Elizabeth, Margaret and William recur in both the Bathgate family and John's Canongate family.
* John's first recorded son was named Peter, and the name was reused after the presumed death of the first child.
* The family moved through a coherent West Calder–Bathgate–Edinburgh geographical corridor.
* No separate adult life has yet been identified for the Bathgate John.

The remaining weakness is the absence of a marriage, census, occupation or other adult record explicitly stating that the Bathgate-born John became the Canongate porter.
Parents and siblings
The 1783 baptism calls John's father Patrick Glasgow. The later baptisms call him Peter Glasgow.

Peter and Patrick were commonly interchanged in Scottish records. More importantly, the continuous baptism sequence with the same wife and locality makes it highly unlikely that two separate fathers were involved.
Proposed paternal grandparents
Peter or Patrick Glasgow is very likely the Peter Glasgow baptised on 10 October 1762 at West Calder, Midlothian, son of John Glasgow and Margaret Mill. "Scotland, Births and Baptisms, 1564–1950," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VQ4T-5P2 : accessed 28 July 2026), Peter Glasgow, baptised 10 October 1762 at West Calder, Midlothian, son of John Glasgow and Margaret Mill; duplicate indexed parent entry (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VQ4T-5PL : accessed 28 July 2026), John Glasgow in entry for Peter Glasgow.

The chronology and geography fit well:

* Peter was about 20 or 21 when John was born in 1783.
* West Calder and Bathgate are neighbouring parts of the same wider district.
* Peter and Elizabeth's family repeatedly used names found among John and Margaret's children.

The baptism of Peter directly proves his parents. The remaining inferential step is identifying the West Calder child with the adult Peter or Patrick who married Elizabeth Dick and had children at Bathgate.

John Glasgow and Margaret Mill are associated with the following likely family:

The supplied index extracts for the later children explicitly name John as father. The original entries should be checked to confirm Margaret Mill as mother in each case.

An 1800 marriage index names an unidentified Glasgow in the entry for Alexander Hunter.
Possible earlier paternal line
The FamilySearch profile for the John Glasgow who married Margaret Mill is:

* John Glasgow, FamilySearch ID 9Q1F-9BL (https://www.familysearch.org/en/tree/person/9Q1F-9BL)

A leading working hypothesis identifies him with John Glasgow baptised on 28 March 1740 at Irvine, Ayrshire, son of George Glasgow and Margaret Martin.

The connected descendant tree gives the following proposed line:

Generation
Person
Status
Earlier ancestor
John Glasgow, born 30 August 1661 at Edinburgh; husband of Agnes Spark

Direct baptism naming John Glasgow and Margaret Mill
Target
John Glasgow, born 7 June 1783 at Bathgate
Baptism names Patrick Glasgow; mother identified as Elizabeth Dick

The proposed identification of the Irvine John is supported by:

* his suitable age to father Peter in 1762;
* the recurrence of Andrew, Margaret and Agnes in the next generation;
* the movement of the wider family through Ayrshire, Edinburgh, West Calder, Livingston, Mid Calder and Bathgate;
* the repeated association of the Glasgow family with women surnamed Mill;
* the absence of another known spouse or family for the Irvine John in the connected descendant report.

The naming sequence is particularly coherent:

John Glasgow and Margaret Mill
Peter or Patrick Glasgow and Elizabeth Dick
John Glasgow and Jean Bryce
Peter
John
Peter
Andrew

William

Jean

Andrew is the most distinctive repeated collateral name. Peter, John, Margaret, Elizabeth, William and Agnes also recur through the proposed generations.

These patterns are supportive but not proof. The required bridge remains a marriage, testament, kirk-session entry, sasine, tax record or other evidence showing that John of Irvine became the husband of Margaret Mill at West Calder.

The connected descendant report also places Janet Isobel Mill as the wife of Thomas Glasgow, born in 1725, another descendant of John Glasgow and Agnes Spark.
Possible connection to Archibald Glasgow
Archibald Glasgow married Isobell Neulands and was named with her in a Glasgow property transaction dated 21 May 1551. WikiTree contributors, "Archibald Glasgow (about 1533)," WikiTree (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Glasgow-1097 : accessed 28 July 2026), citing a property protocol dated 21 May 1551.

The connected descendant tree places later members of the family in:

* Duddingston;
* Inveresk and Musselburgh;
* Edinburgh and St Cuthbert's;
* Kilwinning, Irvine and Stevenston;
* Livingston, Mid Calder and West Calder;
* Bathgate.

This makes it plausible that John's family belonged to the same wider central-Scotland Glasgow network.

The descent from Archibald is not proved. The early connected tree contains chronological conflicts, including Archibald's reported death preceding the reported birth of a supposed son. Each generation must therefore be verified independently before the line is attached as established ancestry.
Newlands connections
The Newlands surname appears repeatedly around John and his descendants:

* John's son was baptised as Thomas Newlands Glasgow in 1821.
* Peter Newland, aged eight, lived in John and Jean's household in 1841.
* The second Peter Glasgow, recorded in 1808, is currently identified as the Peter who later married Agnes Newlands.
* A later son was also named Thomas Newlands Glasgow.

A civil-registration index dated 23 February 1865 associates Peter Glasgow with John Glasgow. "Scotland, Civil Registration, 1855–1875, 1881, 1891," database, FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XSN9-8QYX : accessed 28 July 2026), entry for Peter Glasgow and John Glasgow, 23 February 1865.

The linked family records identify this as the death of Peter, son of John Glasgow and Jean Bryce. The original certificate should be retained or examined to confirm the full parental details and Peter's spouse.

The use of Newlands as Thomas's middle name in 1821 predates Peter's later marriage to Agnes Newlands. The connection between the families therefore existed before that marriage.

Possible explanations include:

* a nearer Newlands ancestor not yet identified;
* repeated intermarriage between the families;
* a close collateral relationship;
* a longstanding family or occupational association.

The earlier marriage of Archibald Glasgow and Isobell Neulands demonstrates that the surnames were associated centuries earlier, but it does not prove that this particular Newlands connection descended from Isobell.
Duplicate and unresolved attached records
Two undated FamilySearch birth or baptism entries name John Glasgow in connection with Peter Glasgow. "Scotland, Births and Baptisms, 1564–1950," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XTR8-FF3 : accessed 28 July 2026), John Glasgow in entry for Peter Glasgow; event date not supplied in the index extract. "Scotland, Births and Baptisms, 1564–1950," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XTRD-321 : accessed 28 July 2026), John Glasgow in entry for Peter Glasgow; event date not supplied in the index extract.

These probably duplicate the dated 1806 or 1808 entries and should not be treated as additional children unless the underlying records show otherwise.
Conflicting identities
Several similarly aged men named John Glasgow have been considered:

* The John Glasgow baptised at Eccles in 1786, son of Robert Glasgow and Agnes Whitehead, was a joiner with a separate wife and family and is not this man.
* The John Glasgow who died at Rothesay in 1863 was a porter of a similar age, but his wife was recorded as Jane Scott and his parents as Robert Glasgow and Janet Brown. He was probably another man.
* The Wiston and Roberton John born in 1784 remains an age match, but no later evidence connects him with Jean Bryce or Canongate.

The Bathgate baptism remains the strongest identification.
Possible 1819 criminal record
A John Glasgow was tried at Edinburgh on 28 July 1819 for falsehood, fraud and wilful imposition. National Records of Scotland, trial papers for John Glasgow, prisoner in the tolbooth of Edinburgh, 28 July 1819; reference JC26/1819/68; related precognition AD14/19/119.

There is no evidence identifying the prisoner as the husband of Jean Bryce. The baptism of Thomas Newlands Glasgow in Edinburgh in April 1821 makes the identification problematic unless the transportation sentence was not carried out, was commuted or was otherwise altered.

The original trial papers may provide the accused's age, occupation, residence, relatives or physical description.

Biography
John was born about 1790.

John Glasgow was reportedly born on 7 June 1783 and baptised on 6 July 1783 at Bathgate, Linlithgowshire, Scotland. The indexed baptism names his father as Patrick Glasgow; the connected family records identify his mother as Elizabeth Dick.

* Peter Glasgow, recorded on 18 March 1808. The reuse of the name probably indicates that the first Peter had died, although no burial has yet been identified.
* John Glasgow, baptised on 10 April 1810. The surname was indexed as Glasgon.

* Thomas Newlands Glasgow, baptised on 22 April 1821. The event appears in two FamilySearch indexes.

FamilySearch also currently identifies Jane Glasgow, later Soutter, born about 1828 and died in 1858, as a daughter. A civil-registration index dated 30 August 1858 associates Jane Soutter with John Glasgow, but the original registration should be checked before the precise relationship is treated as fully proved.

Research Notes
Identification with the Bathgate baptism

The family sequence was:

Peter and Patrick were commonly interchanged in Scottish records. More importantly, the continuous baptism sequence with the same wife and locality makes it highly unlikely that two separate fathers were involved.

Proposed paternal grandparents
Peter or Patrick Glasgow is very likely the Peter Glasgow baptised on 10 October 1762 at West Calder, Midlothian, son of John Glasgow and Margaret Mill.

This may relate to one of the daughters, but the supplied extract does not preserve the bride's forename and should not yet be assigned to a specific person.

Possible earlier paternal line
The FamilySearch profile for the John Glasgow who married Margaret Mill is:

* John Glasgow, FamilySearch ID 9Q1F-9BL

* his suitable age to father Peter in 1762;
* the recurrence of Andrew, Margaret and Agnes in the next generation;
* the movement of the wider family through Ayrshire, Edinburgh, West Calder, Livingston, Mid Calder and Bathgate;
* the repeated association of the Glasgow family with women surnamed Mill;
* the absence of another known spouse or family for the Irvine John in the connected descendant report.

The naming sequence is particularly coherent:

John Glasgow and Margaret Mill
Peter or Patrick Glasgow and Elizabeth Dick
John Glasgow and Jean Bryce
Peter
John
Peter
Andrew
Margaret

William
Margaret
Janet
Agnes
William

Jean

Thomas Newlands

Andrew is the most distinctive repeated collateral name. Peter, John, Margaret, Elizabeth, William and Agnes also recur through the proposed generations.

These patterns are supportive but not proof. The required bridge remains a marriage, testament, kirk-session entry, sasine, tax record or other evidence showing that John of Irvine became the husband of Margaret Mill at West Calder.

The connected descendant report also places Janet Isobel Mill as the wife of Thomas Glasgow, born in 1725, another descendant of John Glasgow and Agnes Spark. The recurrence of the Mill surname may indicate repeated marriage between the same family networks, but no relationship between Janet Isobel Mill and Margaret Mill has yet been established.

Possible connection to Archibald Glasgow
Archibald Glasgow married Isobell Neulands and was named with her in a Glasgow property transaction dated 21 May 1551.

The connected descendant tree places later members of the family in:

* Duddingston;
* Inveresk and Musselburgh;
* Edinburgh and St Cuthbert's;
* Kilwinning, Irvine and Stevenston;
* Livingston, Mid Calder and West Calder;
* Bathgate.

* a nearer Newlands ancestor not yet identified;
* repeated intermarriage between the families;
* a close collateral relationship;
