About Robert

Substantive amendment. The exact Edinburgh baptism identifies Robert's parents as James Glasgow and Jean Dobie and describes James as a shoemaker and indweller. Those parents are attached but uncertain, while the captured biography omits them and instead speculates about two broader ancestral candidates. The record supports making both parent relationships confident and replacing that misleading narrative.

Additional newspaper originals, 5 October 2026

Robert Glasgow, Edinburgh prisoner report, 1767: Uncertain birth before 7 January 1703 at Edinburgh permits an older adult in 1767. This upper birth bound is not an exact baptism or age; no court or banishment identity bridge. Two compatible Scottish profiles remain weak possibilities. No identity with the 1772 Robert son of Andrew at Calder, Maryland sale participant or Montgreenan man is established. No family or life-date change follows.

Original newspaper batch, 5 October 2026

Robert Glasgow, master of John and Archibald, 1754: Chronologically possible (at least 51); no corroborating maritime evidence. Public source summary cites a Findmypast baptism transcript dated 7 Jan 1703 at Edinburgh; maintained vital preserves the before qualifier. Profile findings link the baptism to Edinburgh parents, but no relevant maritime or London criminal record was identified. The earlier record was not re-inspected in this batch. Glasgow-2474 is the leading possible role candidate because prior research reports a 1738 Irvine shipmaster. That original was not re-inspected here, and no record bridges Betty and Grizell to John and Archibald. Identity with the 1751 defendant remains unproved. No relationship or life-date amendment follows.

Original newspaper batch, 5 October 2026

Robert Glasgow, Old Bailey and Newgate reports, 1751: Chronologically possible (at least 48); no corroborating London evidence. Public source summary cites a Findmypast baptism transcript dated 7 Jan 1703 at Edinburgh; maintained vital preserves the before qualifier. Profile findings link the baptism to Edinburgh parents, but no relevant maritime or London criminal record was identified. Earlier records are prior research context, not newly inspected originals. The two reports refer to the same named robbery case. No existing profile supplies an identity bridge. The 1754 master is kept as a separate documentary subject; the execution order does not prove Robert’s death. No relationship or life-date amendment follows.

Robert Glasgow is reported among nine Old Bailey convicts receiving judgment of death, for highway robbery of Joseph Weedon’s gold ring, silver shoe buckles and other things. A conviction/sentence report. The Last Saturday trial reference has no saved report dateline; no exact trial date inferred. This is not proof of actual execution, death or family identity. The Gloucester Journal, 1751-07-16, p.2

Robert Glasgow, condemned for robbing Joseph Weedon on the highway, is included among Newgate prisoners ordered for execution on Monday next. Same named case as the 16 July sentence report, but a different reported action. John Young is the prisoner reprieved for life. This execution order does not establish that Robert was executed. Relative Yesterday and Monday next are not converted to issue-based dates. The Western Flying Post; or, Sherborne and Yeovil Mercury, 1751-07-29, p.2

An Edinburgh city-gaol report names Robert Glasgow among prisoners convicted of theft and reports their sentence of public exposure and banishment from the city and liberties forever. Original inspected. The notice reports conviction and sentence; it does not establish later removal or identity with any other Robert Glasgow. Two compatible Scottish profiles remain weak possibilities. No identity with the 1772 Robert son of Andrew at Calder, Maryland sale participant or Montgreenan man is established. Identity and family

Identity assessment — newspaper candidates withdrawn, 6 October 2026
  • The Gloucester Journal, 1751-07-16, p.2: no longer a candidate for this profile. July 1751 report that Robert Glasgow was among nine Old Bailey convicts sentenced to death for robbing Joseph Weedon. The Ordinary's Account shows he was a butcher aged 28, born at Chipping Ongar, Essex. All three Scottish candidates conflict, so he has no WikiTree profile and needs a new one.
  • The Western Flying Post; or, Sherborne and Yeovil Mercury, 1751-07-29, p.2: no longer a candidate for this profile. July 1751 report that Robert Glasgow was ordered for execution. The Ordinary's Account confirms he was hanged at Tyburn on Monday 29 July 1751. He has no WikiTree profile; the new profile is flagged on group 971486582.
Identity assessment — newspaper candidates withdrawn, 6 October 2026
  • The Pennsylvania Gazette, 1754-03-19, p.2: no longer a candidate for this profile. One 1754 distress report (three printings) of Robert Glasgow, master of the snow John and Archibald of Glasgow, on a Virginia-to-Glasgow passage. WikiTree already has a documentary profile for exactly this shipmaster, Glasgow-2867, built on the Maryland Gazette printing of the same Antigua report; the notice adds no kin. Glasgow-2474 (Irvine shipmaster 1738) is a possible earlier/later identity of the same man (merge question), not a separate match.
Identity assessment — newspaper candidates withdrawn, 6 October 2026
  • The Caledonian Mercury, 1767-12-21, p.3: no longer a candidate for this profile. Dec 1767: Robert Glasgow, with George Garnock, Niel M'Kinnon and Donald M'Donald, sentenced in Edinburgh for theft to be walked through the city and banished. The 1772 banished-persons list repeats Garnoch and Mackinnon beside 'Robert Glasgow, son of Andrew Glasgow miller at Calder', so this is that man; he has no WikiTree profile.

Current conclusion

**Substantive amendment.** The exact Edinburgh baptism identifies Robert's parents as [[Glasgow-3103|James Glasgow]] and [[Dobie-449|Jean Dobie]] and describes James as a shoemaker and indweller. Those parents are attached but uncertain, while the captured biography omits them and instead speculates about two broader ancestral candidates. Robert Glasgow, Old Bailey and Newgate reports, 1751: Chronologically possible (at least 48); no corroborating London evidence.
