Summary of the research
Overall conclusion
The adult formerly represented by Glasgow-3479, named with Mary Borland in 1736 and 1738 Irvine baptism indexes, is treated as the later identity of this child. A 1738 Irvine archive catalogue names a Robert Glasgow as a ship's master there between those baptisms. The name, locality, compatible chronology and absence of a better candidate support the identification, although the later records do not directly name the adult's parents. The profiles were merged into Glasgow-2474 on 27 September 2026. The surviving profile retains John Glasgow and Isabell Kyle as parents, Mary Borland as spouse, John Glasgow as child, and the combined citations and research cautions.
Later additions
Newest first. Each addition adds to the summary above; it does not replace it.
Additional newspaper originals, 5 October 2026
Captain Glasgow, vessel William at New-York, 1758: Recorded 1716 Irvine birth and prior 1738 shipmaster study make a compatible occupational candidate. This 1758 notice supplies no personal forename or vessel identity bridge. The master’s forename remains unknown: William is the vessel. The 1738/1754 Robert shipmaster candidate and older William namesakes are compatible comparisons, without a voyage or individual bridge. Do not identify this man with the 1792 Belfast captain solely by surname. No family or life-date change follows.
Larne passenger newspaper report, 5 October 2026
Robert born 1716 would be about 72. Prior public research reports a 1738 Irvine shipmaster, not re-inspected here; no bridge to Ann or Larne. One or more surname-only shipmasters, with the two passenger reports clearly one reprinted notice. The January inward and February clearance entries are compatible but unproved continuity. Glasgow-3324, Glasgow-2474 and Glasgow-4124 remain possible comparisons; no forename or family identity is established. No family or life-date change follows.
Original newspaper batch, 5 October 2026
Robert Glasgow, master of John and Archibald, 1754: Best role-aligned candidate among those checked: age 38 and the 1738 shipmaster record is relevant prior maritime evidence. No direct bridge to Snow John and Archibald. A Findmypast baptism transcript records him at Irvine. Public research findings associate the adult Robert Glasgow-3479 with Irvine family entries and report an Irvine Burgh Catalogue entry (4 Aug 1738) naming Robert Glasgow master of the Irvine ship Betty and Grizell; the profile merge preserves that caveat. The earlier record was not re-inspected in this batch. Glasgow-2474 is the leading possible role candidate because prior research reports a 1738 Irvine shipmaster. That original was not re-inspected here, and no record bridges Betty and Grizell to John and Archibald. Identity with the 1751 defendant remains unproved. No relationship or life-date amendment follows.
Original newspaper batch, 5 October 2026
Robert Glasgow, Old Bailey and Newgate reports, 1751: Possible; age 35, no concrete chronology conflict. The newspaper’s later execution order is a serious unresolved continuity issue, but execution itself is not established. Earlier records are prior research context, not newly inspected originals. The two reports refer to the same named robbery case. No existing profile supplies an identity bridge. The 1754 master is kept as a separate documentary subject; the execution order does not prove Robert’s death. No relationship or life-date amendment follows.
Findmypast Glasgow surname evidence
The transcript-validated baptism record for Robert Glasgow, 10 Jan 1716, Irvine, is assigned to this profile. This record alone does not establish the later household; the same-town identity assessment and subsequent merger are documented in the current conclusion above.

Robert Glasgow is reported among nine Old Bailey convicts receiving judgment of death, for highway robbery of Joseph Weedon’s gold ring, silver shoe buckles and other things. A conviction/sentence report. The Last Saturday trial reference has no saved report dateline; no exact trial date inferred. This is not proof of actual execution, death or family identity. The Gloucester Journal, 1751-07-16, p.2
Robert Glasgow, condemned for robbing Joseph Weedon on the highway, is included among Newgate prisoners ordered for execution on Monday next. Same named case as the 16 July sentence report, but a different reported action. John Young is the prisoner reprieved for life. This execution order does not establish that Robert was executed. Relative Yesterday and Monday next are not converted to issue-based dates. The Western Flying Post; or, Sherborne and Yeovil Mercury, 1751-07-29, p.2

The brig Ann is listed inward with Glasgow as master and Larne as origin. Original checked under MARINE LIST / INWARD ENTRIES. Row reads “Brig Ann, Glasgow, Larne”; adjacent rows follow vessel, master, origin order. Retain Glasgow as the unnamed brig master, not the city. No forename, kin or personal residence stated. The two February prose notices reprint one report; continuity with the January inward and February clearance entries is possible, not proved. A shipping report states: William Glasgow, from London, at New-York. Adjacent entries pair vessel and master names, including The Nancy, Maxwell. Thus William is read as the vessel and Glasgow as its master’s surname; no personal forename is supplied. London and New-York are voyage context, not proved personal residence. The report supplies no exact arrival day, age, family or bridge to later masters. The master’s forename remains unknown: William is the vessel. The 1738/1754 Robert shipmaster candidate and older William namesakes are compatible comparisons, without a voyage or individual bridge. Do not identify this man with the 1792 Belfast captain solely by surname. The Public Advertiser, 1758-02-18, p.1

- The Gloucester Journal, 1751-07-16, p.2: no longer a candidate for this profile. July 1751 report that Robert Glasgow was among nine Old Bailey convicts sentenced to death for robbing Joseph Weedon. The Ordinary's Account shows he was a butcher aged 28, born at Chipping Ongar, Essex. All three Scottish candidates conflict, so he has no WikiTree profile and needs a new one.
- The Western Flying Post; or, Sherborne and Yeovil Mercury, 1751-07-29, p.2: no longer a candidate for this profile. July 1751 report that Robert Glasgow was ordered for execution. The Ordinary's Account confirms he was hanged at Tyburn on Monday 29 July 1751. He has no WikiTree profile; the new profile is flagged on group 971486582.
- The Public Advertiser, 1758-02-18, p.1: no longer a candidate for this profile. 1758 shipping line 'William, Glasgow, from London, at New-York'. William is the vessel and Glasgow the master's surname; the master's forename is unknown, so he cannot be identified.
Identity assessment — newspaper candidates withdrawn, 6 October 2026
- The Pennsylvania Gazette, 1754-03-19, p.2: no longer a candidate for this profile. One 1754 distress report (three printings) of Robert Glasgow, master of the snow John and Archibald of Glasgow, on a Virginia-to-Glasgow passage. WikiTree already has a documentary profile for exactly this shipmaster, Glasgow-2867, built on the Maryland Gazette printing of the same Antigua report; the notice adds no kin. Glasgow-2474 (Irvine shipmaster 1738) is a possible earlier/later identity of the same man (merge question), not a separate match.
Identity assessment — newspaper candidates withdrawn, 6 October 2026The Columbian Herald, or, The Independent Courier of North-America, 1788-01-28, p.2 : no longer a candidate for this profile.
- The Columbian Herald, or, The Independent Courier of North-America, 1788-01-28, p.2: no longer a candidate for this profile. A Charleston marine list of January 1788 enters the brig Ann inward from Larne, with a master surnamed Glasgow. The master's forename is not given and he cannot be identified on WikiTree. The Larne-born William Glasgow (Glasgow-3324) remains only a possible comparison.
- The Pennsylvania Journal, or, Weekly Advertiser, 1788-02-13, p.2: no longer a candidate for this profile. Philadelphia papers of February 1788 reprint a report that the brig Ann, Capt. Glasgow, arrived from Larne with nearly 200 passengers in good health, praising the captain's humanity. This is the same surname-only master as the Charleston marine-list entries. He remains unidentified.
- The Columbian Herald, or, The Independent Courier of North-America, 1788-02-18, p.2: no longer a candidate for this profile. A Charleston marine list of February 1788 records the brig Ann cleared out for Georgetown, with master Glasgow. This is the same surname-only master as the January arrival from Larne, and he is unidentified.

Robert Glasgow, Old Bailey and Newgate reports, 1751: Possible; age 35, no concrete chronology conflict. The newspaper’s later execution order is a serious unresolved continuity issue, but execution itself is not established. Current conclusion — Larne passenger newspaper report, 5 October 2026

Tuesday is relative report wording, not an exact arrival day inferred from the issue date. Larne is voyage origin, not the captain’s birthplace. [The Columbian Herald, or, The Independent Courier of North-America, 1788-01-28, p.2](https://www.newspapers.com/image/604128637/) The brig Ann, Captain Glasgow, is reported arriving from Larne after a tedious passage with near 200 passengers in good health; the report praises the captain’s humane and generous behaviour. Original checked. “Tuesday arrived, after a tedious passage, the brig Ann, Capt. Glasgow, from Larne, with near 200 passengers, all in good health …” Passage continues with praise of the captain’s humane behaviour. Personal surname/title, but no forename. No forename, kin or personal residence stated. The two February prose notices reprint one report; continuity with the January inward and February clearance entries is possible, not proved. Tuesday is relative report wording, not an exact arrival day inferred from the issue date. Larne is voyage origin, not the captain’s birthplace. Inspect brig Ann ownership, port entry/clearance, passenger and shipping registers around 1788; seek the captain’s forename and signatures before linking him to the Larne family or another master.
Current conclusion — additional newspaper originals, 5 October 2026
Captain Glasgow, vessel William at New-York, 1758: Recorded 1716 Irvine birth and prior 1738 shipmaster study make a compatible occupational candidate. This 1758 notice supplies no personal forename or vessel identity bridge. The master’s forename remains unknown: William is the vessel. The 1738/1754 Robert shipmaster candidate and older William namesakes are compatible comparisons, without a voyage or individual bridge. Do not identify this man with the 1792 Belfast captain solely by surname. No family or life-date change follows.
Source findings
[The Public Advertiser, 1758-02-18, p.1](https://www.newspapers.com/image/34419759/)
Next questions
Inspect vessel William registers and London/New-York clearances for master’s full name, age or owners; compare independently named masters only with an individual bridge.

- [The Gloucester Journal, 1751-07-16, p.2](https://www.newspapers.com/image/971486582/): no longer a candidate for this profile. - [The Western Flying Post; or, Sherborne and Yeovil Mercury, 1751-07-29, p.2](https://www.newspapers.com/image/979343886/): no longer a candidate for this profile. July 1751 report that Robert Glasgow was ordered for execution. The Ordinary's Account confirms he was hanged at Tyburn on Monday 29 July 1751. He has no WikiTree profile; the new profile is flagged on group 971486582. - [The Public Advertiser, 1758-02-18, p.1](https://www.newspapers.com/image/34419759/): no longer a candidate for this profile. 1758 shipping line 'William, Glasgow, from London, at New-York'. William is the vessel and Glasgow the master's surname; the master's forename is unknown, so he cannot be identified.

- [The Pennsylvania Gazette, 1754-03-19, p.2](https://www.newspapers.com/image/39398244/): no longer a candidate for this profile.

- [The Columbian Herald, or, The Independent Courier of North-America, 1788-01-28, p.2](https://www.newspapers.com/image/604128637/): no longer a candidate for this profile. A Charleston marine list of January 1788 enters the brig Ann inward from Larne, with a master surnamed Glasgow. The master's forename is not given and he cannot be identified on WikiTree. The Larne-born William Glasgow (Glasgow-3324) remains only a possible comparison. - [The Pennsylvania Journal, or, Weekly Advertiser, 1788-02-13, p.2](https://www.newspapers.com/image/1034014648/): no longer a candidate for this profile. Philadelphia papers of February 1788 reprint a report that the brig Ann, Capt. Glasgow, arrived from Larne with nearly 200 passengers in good health, praising the captain's humanity. This is the same surname-only master as the Charleston marine-list entries. He remains unidentified. - [The Columbian Herald, or, The Independent Courier of North-America, 1788-02-18, p.2](https://www.newspapers.com/image/604128661/): no longer a candidate for this profile. A Charleston marine list of February 1788 records the brig Ann cleared out for Georgetown, with master Glasgow. This is the same surname-only master as the January arrival from Larne, and he is unidentified.
