James Glasgow
1758 – 1789
Cecil, Maryland
About James
James Glasgow was recorded as the son of James Glasgow (Glasgow-2868) and Ann Hartshorne (Hartshorne-320) of Cecil County, Maryland, born there in 1758 and died in 1789; both dates are uncertain. He was possibly the James Glasgow 'living at Christiana Bridge' who advertised a tanyard in the borough of Wilmington, Delaware, in March 1785, a place near the family's Cecil County home, but his profile has no Delaware, tanning or property record, so the match is unproved. A 1782 Christiana Bridge tanyard notice and name-only entries in a Lancaster letter list of 1773 and a Carlisle list of 1795 have been set aside as not identifying him.

- The Pennsylvania Journal, or, Weekly Advertiser, 1785-03-23, p.2: James Glasgow (advertiser of tanyard, resident at Christiana Bridge) — possible match. The notice gives only the name, the residence 'living at Christiana Bridge' and a property in the borough of Wilmington, Delaware, held by Thomas Glenn. The same name and residence appear in the 1782 notice for the former Charles Whitlock tanyard in Wilmington (local findings for Glasgow-2868 and Glasgow-3290), so the two advertisements very probably refer to one Christiana Bridge man. Glasgow-3290 (James, b. 1758 Cecil County, d. 1789, son of Glasgow-2868 and Hartshorne-320) was alive in 1785 and belongs to a family recorded in neighbouring Cecil County, Maryland, about 10 miles from Christiana Bridge. However, his profile cites only Glasgow-2868 and has no Delaware, tanning or property record, so he is possible only. Glasgow-2868 is unlikely: the Find a Grave memorial cited on Hartshorne-320 gives his death as January 1784 in Cecil County, which is before the notice dated 12 March 1785 Sources: Find a Grave memorial 218616666, James Glasgow (1720–Jan 1784), Cecil County, Maryland (user-contributed); NCpedia, Glasgow, James (Dictionary of North Carolina Biography, C. Wilmington/Christiana Bridge notices through 1785, 5 October 2026The signed Wilmington/Christiana Bridge advertiser remains unidentified.
The signed Wilmington/Christiana Bridge advertiser remains unidentified. Two Cecil County chronological/regional James profiles are compatible, without a property or individual bridge. The North Carolina secretary is another adult namesake but has a different documentary region; do not merge him solely because Wilmington is also a North Carolina place. The 1785 notices create tension with Glasgow-2868’s estimated c. 1784 death, which is not a certain exclusion; inspect that estimate before assigning the later advertiser. No continuity of property ownership is proved.
James Glasgow, at Christiana Bridge in Newcastle county, advertises for private sale the former Charles Whitlock tanyard in the borough of Wilmington; notice dated 5 August 1782. Sixteen issues preserve the 5 August 1782 former Charles Whitlock property advertisement; three 1785 issues carry a different notice, explicitly naming Delaware and Thomas Glenn. The records share advertiser name and Christiana Bridge address, supporting a provisional cluster; same plot, ownership, occupation and completed sale remain unproved. The signed Wilmington/Christiana Bridge advertiser remains unidentified. Two Cecil County chronological/regional James profiles are compatible, without a property or individual bridge. James Glasgow, living at Christiana Bridge, signs a notice dated 12 March 1785 offering a complete tanyard in the borough of Wilmington, State of Delaware, then in the tenure of Thomas Glenn. Three issues reprint this separate 1785 notice. The printed Delaware designation and Thomas Glenn occupancy are explicit. Advertiser is not necessarily owner or tanner; no completed sale or identity of this plot with the former Whitlock property in 1782 is proved. James Glasgow (2) is listed among letters remaining in Lancaster’s post office. Alphabetical letters-remaining list headed Post-Office, Lancaster. The (2) marker is preserved without reading it as an age. Nearby county names belong to other entries; the post office is not proof of James’s residence. Normalized Glasgow is the personal surname reading. The three checked profiles remain possible; none identifies the addressee. James Glasgow, Marsh creek, appears in a Carlisle names/address list reprinted in July–August 1795. The printed Marsh creek qualifier immediately accompanies James, not the next Andrew Givin. No common list heading or list date was found on the inspected pages; postal interpretation remains qualified. No existing profile is identified. - The Pennsylvania Gazette, 1773-07-21, p.4: no longer a candidate for this profile. James Glasgow, with a '(2)' marker, in the Lancaster post-office letter list of July 1773. Name only; no profile can be singled out.

James Glasgow 'at Christiana Bridge in Newcastle county' advertises (5 Aug 1782, sixteen insertions) the former Charles Whitlock tanyard in Wilmington. No profile is documented in New Castle County; the Cecil County James (Glasgow-2868) and his son (Glasgow-3290) are possible regional namesakes; the North Carolina Secretary of State (Glasgow-634) is unlikely because he was holding office and living in North Carolina at the time.

- [The Pennsylvania Journal, or, Weekly Advertiser, 1785-03-23, p.2](https://www.newspapers.com/image/1034008744/): James Glasgow (advertiser of tanyard, resident at Christiana Bridge) — **possible** match. Glasgow-2868 is unlikely: the Find a Grave memorial cited on Hartshorne-320 gives his death as January 1784 in Cecil County, which is before the notice dated 12 March 1785 Sources: [Find a Grave memorial 218616666, James Glasgow (1720–Jan 1784), Cecil County, Maryland (user-contributed)](https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/218616666/james_glasgow); [NCpedia, Glasgow, James (Dictionary of North Carolina Biography, C.
