How parent leads are calculated

Automated leads use birth surnames—not married surnames—as parental eligibility, role-specific biological age limits, bounded and approximate-date uncertainty, household chronology, specific time-aware localities, mapped distance, tenancy succession, migration destinations and sex-aware Scottish naming positions across generations. People already attached as the subject's parents stay in the identity summary and are excluded from this alternative-candidate list, regardless of relationship confidence. The main calibration uses clues available on disconnected profiles; existing parent and sibling links are retained as comparison context rather than treated as transferable evidence. Common ordered names and grandparent-to-child echoes receive a small non-zero weight, so a John or James match can support several independent criteria without producing a lead alone. Rare names, repeated bearers and bundles across otherwise distinct branches receive substantially more weight according to catalogue frequency. An exact migration place is weighted by its rarity and repetition across both branches; a shared destination country is worth only one point. Extra weight is added only when at least three independent clue types converge: naming, locality, specific migration, household chronology or collateral networks. Sparse profiles retain a clearly labelled chronology-only fallback instead of disappearing. Countries, states, counties and research clusters do not count as a shared locality, and fallback, broad representative or kin-inferred coordinates are excluded from distance scoring. Shared descendant profiles are removed before branch-name comparison. A candidate already recorded as a parent-in-law is excluded. A confident or independently supported parent is treated as settled; uncertain and unassessed attachments remain open to alternative comparison. A different linked parent, an uncle/aunt or grandparent path, and a matching existing child profile prevent an alternative from being classified as a strong direct-parent lead until the underlying tree conflict or duplicate is resolved. Familiar forms such as Bessie are normalised. Surname remains an eligibility filter worth zero points.

Naming customs, shared farms and occupations are circumstantial. Children, spouses and collateral relatives may be missing, and tree-derived family networks are not independent evidence. Scores rank research leads; they do not prove parentage.

How duplicate leads are calculated

Dates are eligibility gates, not merely deductions: chronologically impossible people are excluded. Dates, places, spouses, parent certainty and children's profiles and names are then compared. A high score is a prompt to inspect records, not a merge recommendation.

Record-bearing passages

  • Biography John Glasgow was born about 1740 in Ayrshire, Scotland. An indexed Scottish birth or baptism record gives the date 28 March 1740 at Irvine and identifies him as a son of George Glasgow and Margaret Martin. "Scotland Births and Baptisms, 1564–1950," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XTVL-9BN : accessed 28 July 2026), John Glasgow, 28 March 1740; citing FHL microfilm 1,041,383.
  • John is probably the John Glasgow who married or partnered with Margaret Mill and later lived at West Calder, Midlothian. Their son Peter Glasgow was baptised there on 10 October 1762. "Scotland, Births and Baptisms, 1564–1950," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VQ4T-5P2 : accessed 28 July 2026), Peter Glasgow, baptised 10 October 1762 at West Calder, Midlothian, son of John Glasgow and Margaret Mill; duplicate parent entry (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VQ4T-5PL : accessed 28 July 2026), John Glasgow in entry for Peter Glasgow.
  • The identification of the Irvine-born John with Margaret Mill's husband is a strong working hypothesis, but has not yet been confirmed by a marriage record or another document explicitly connecting Irvine and West Calder.

  • An 1800 marriage index associates an unidentified woman surnamed Glasgow with Alexander Hunter. She may have been one of John's daughters, but the extract does not preserve enough information to identify her securely. Research NotesIdentification as Margaret Mill's husband The John Glasgow baptised or recorded at Irvine in 1740 is the leading candidate for the John Glasgow who later had children with Margaret Mill at West Calder.
  • John would have been about 22 when Peter was baptised in 1762.

    • Margaret Mill was reportedly born about 1740, making the couple similar in age.
    • No separate wife or family is presently attached to the Irvine John.
    • The names Andrew, Margaret and Agnes occur among both his probable siblings and his proposed children.
    • The wider family appears to have moved between Ayrshire, Edinburgh, western Midlothian and Linlithgowshire.
    • Another member of the connected family, Thomas Glasgow born in 1725, reportedly married Janet Isobel Mill, suggesting repeated association between the Glasgow and Mill families.
  • The principal weakness is that no marriage, testament, sasine, kirk-session entry or other record has yet been found stating that John of Irvine became the husband of Margaret Mill at West Calder. Parents and siblings John's parents were George Glasgow and Margaret Martin. The connected family reconstruction attributes the following children to George and Margaret:
  • Naming repetition is supportive but does not prove identity. Son Peter and the Bathgate family John and Margaret's son Peter, baptised in 1762, is probably the Peter or Patrick Glasgow who later had children with Elizabeth Dick at Bathgate.
  • {| class="wikitable" ! Child ! Record date ! Father as indexed |- | John Glasgow | 6 July 1783 | Patrick Glasgow |- | Margaret Glasgow | 10 April 1785 | Peter Glasgow |- | Elizabeth Glasgow | 17 June 1787 | Peter Glasgow |- | Andrew Glasgow | 11 April 1790 | Peter Glasgow |- | William Glasgow | 29 July 1792 | Peter Glasgow |- | Agnes Glasgow | 22 March 1795 | Peter Glasgow |}
  • Peter and Patrick were often used interchangeably in Scottish records. The continuous sequence of children, the same wife and the same locality make it highly likely that Peter and Patrick were the same person.
  • The eldest son, John Glasgow, reportedly born on 7 June 1783 and baptised on 6 July 1783, is probably the John Glasgow who later married Jean Bryce and worked as a shop porter in Canongate, Edinburgh.
  • {| class="wikitable" ! Generation ! Person ! Evidence status |- | 1 | John Glasgow, born or baptised 1740 at Irvine | Direct baptism; later identity uncertain |- | 2 | Peter or Patrick Glasgow, baptised 1762 at West Calder | Baptism directly names John Glasgow and Margaret Mill |- | 3 | John Glasgow, born 1783 at Bathgate | Baptism names Patrick Glasgow; later Canongate identity strongly supported but circumstantial |} Naming pattern The family names recur across several generations:
  • The connected CC7 descendant report places John baptised in 1740 among the children of George Glasgow and Margaret Martin and within a wider line descending from John Glasgow, born in Edinburgh in 1661. WikiTree CC7 descendant report generated from the connected descendants of Archibald Glasgow, supplied 28 July 2026. The report reflects current WikiTree relationships and is a research aid rather than independent proof. Possible earlier ancestry The connected WikiTree structure proposes:
  • {| class="wikitable" ! Generation ! Person ! Status |- | Earlier ancestor | Archibald Glasgow, husband of Isobell Neulands | Very early connection contains unresolved chronological problems |- | Later descendant | John Glasgow, born 30 August 1661 at Edinburgh, husband of Agnes Spark | Connected-tree relationship |- | Son | George Glasgow, husband of Margaret Martin | Connected-tree relationship |- | Son | John Glasgow, recorded 28 March 1740 at Irvine | Supported by indexed baptism |}
  • The descent from Archibald Glasgow is not established. The early connected tree contains a serious chronological conflict: Archibald's reported death predates the reported birth of one supposed son. Every generation before John Glasgow and Agnes Spark should therefore be independently verified.
  • The earlier marriage of Archibald Glasgow and Isobell Neulands may indicate a longstanding association between the Glasgow and Newlands families. It does not prove that the later Newlands connections in the descendants of John born in 1783 came through Isobell. Alternative candidates Another John Glasgow was baptised on 2 July 1721 at Kilwinning, a son of Hugh Glasgow and Janet Kilpatrick.
  • He could also have been the husband of Margaret Mill, but he would have been about 41 when Peter was baptised in 1762 and substantially older than Margaret. The 1740 Irvine John is therefore the better chronological match.
  • John Glasgow, baptised in 1750 at Mid Calder, can effectively be excluded as Peter's father under the current dates because he would have been only about twelve in 1762.
  • An otherwise unrecorded collateral John remains possible. Research priorities

    • Find the marriage or proclamation of John Glasgow and Margaret Mill.
    • Examine the original West Calder baptism of Peter Glasgow dated 10 October 1762.
    • Examine the original baptisms of Andrew, Margaret, Agnes, Issobel and Janet to confirm their mother.
    • Trace the Irvine John through kirk-session records, tax rolls, land records, testaments and burials.
    • Search Irvine, Kilwinning, Stevenston, West Calder and neighbouring parishes for evidence of the family's movement.
    • Identify the Glasgow woman who married Alexander Hunter in 1800.
    • Compare witnesses in the West Calder baptisms with George Glasgow, Margaret Martin and their known children.
    • Treat the identification of John born in 1740 as Margaret Mill's husband as probable rather than proved until a direct bridging record is found.
    • Treat the proposed descent from Archibald Glasgow as unproved until each intervening generation is documented. Sources

Biography
John Glasgow was born about 1740 in Ayrshire, Scotland.

John is probably the John Glasgow who married or partnered with Margaret Mill and later lived at West Calder, Midlothian. Their son Peter Glasgow was baptised there on 10 October 1762. "Scotland, Births and Baptisms, 1564–1950," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VQ4T-5P2 : accessed 28 July 2026), Peter Glasgow, baptised 10 October 1762 at West Calder, Midlothian, son of John Glasgow and Margaret Mill; duplicate parent entry (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VQ4T-5PL : accessed 28 July 2026), John Glasgow in entry for Peter Glasgow.

The identification of the Irvine-born John with Margaret Mill's husband is a strong working hypothesis, but has not yet been confirmed by a marriage record or another document explicitly connecting Irvine and West Calder.

The supplied extracts for Andrew, Margaret, Agnes, Issobel and Janet identify John as their father but do not display their mother's name. Their dates and placement with the same FamilySearch family make Margaret Mill the probable mother, but the original entries should be checked.

An 1800 marriage index associates an unidentified woman surnamed Glasgow with Alexander Hunter. She may have been one of John's daughters, but the extract does not preserve enough information to identify her securely. "Scotland, Marriages, 1561–1910," database, FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYSW-FB4 : accessed 28 July 2026), Glasgow in entry for Alexander Hunter, 1800.
Research NotesIdentification as Margaret Mill's husband
The John Glasgow baptised or recorded at Irvine in 1740 is the leading candidate for the John Glasgow who later had children with Margaret Mill at West Calder.

Evidence supporting the identification includes:

* John would have been about 22 when Peter was baptised in 1762.
* Margaret Mill was reportedly born about 1740, making the couple similar in age.
* No separate wife or family is presently attached to the Irvine John.
* The names Andrew, Margaret and Agnes occur among both his probable siblings and his proposed children.
* The wider family appears to have moved between Ayrshire, Edinburgh, western Midlothian and Linlithgowshire.
* Another member of the connected family, Thomas Glasgow born in 1725, reportedly married Janet Isobel Mill, suggesting repeated association between the Glasgow and Mill families.

The principal weakness is that no marriage, testament, sasine, kirk-session entry or other record has yet been found stating that John of Irvine became the husband of Margaret Mill at West Calder.
Parents and siblings
John's parents were George Glasgow and Margaret Martin. The connected family reconstruction attributes the following children to George and Margaret:

Child

The repeated use of Andrew in the next generation is of particular interest. John and Margaret Mill reportedly named a son Andrew in 1764, and their son Peter later named another son Andrew in 1790.

Naming repetition is supportive but does not prove identity.
Son Peter and the Bathgate family
John and Margaret's son Peter, baptised in 1762, is probably the Peter or Patrick Glasgow who later had children with Elizabeth Dick at Bathgate.

Peter and Elizabeth's family included:

Child
Record date
Father as indexed
John Glasgow
6 July 1783

Margaret Glasgow

Peter Glasgow
William Glasgow
29 July 1792
Peter Glasgow
Agnes Glasgow

Peter Glasgow

Peter and Patrick were often used interchangeably in Scottish records. The continuous sequence of children, the same wife and the same locality make it highly likely that Peter and Patrick were the same person.

The eldest son, John Glasgow, reportedly born on 7 June 1783 and baptised on 6 July 1783, is probably the John Glasgow who later married Jean Bryce and worked as a shop porter in Canongate, Edinburgh.

The proposed line is therefore:

Generation
Person
Evidence status
1
John Glasgow, born or baptised 1740 at Irvine
Direct baptism; later identity uncertain
2

Baptism directly names John Glasgow and Margaret Mill
3
John Glasgow, born 1783 at Bathgate
Baptism names Patrick Glasgow; later Canongate identity strongly supported but circumstantial
Naming pattern
The family names recur across several generations:

George Glasgow and Margaret Martin
John Glasgow and Margaret Mill
Peter Glasgow and Elizabeth Dick
John Glasgow and Jean Bryce
George

Margaret

Janet
Agnes
William

Jean

The recurrence of Andrew, Margaret, Agnes, John, Elizabeth and Peter is consistent with a single extended family. Most of the names were common, however, and the pattern cannot substitute for direct documentary evidence.
Wider family and migration pattern
The connected descendant tree places members of this broader Glasgow family in:

* Edinburgh during the seventeenth century;
* Kilwinning, Irvine and Stevenston in Ayrshire;
* Livingston, Mid Calder and West Calder;
* Bathgate in Linlithgowshire;
* Canongate, Edinburgh, during the early nineteenth century.

This makes the movement from Irvine to West Calder, then Bathgate and Canongate, geographically plausible.

The connected CC7 descendant report places John baptised in 1740 among the children of George Glasgow and Margaret Martin and within a wider line descending from John Glasgow, born in Edinburgh in 1661. WikiTree CC7 descendant report generated from the connected descendants of Archibald Glasgow, supplied 28 July 2026. The report reflects current WikiTree relationships and is a research aid rather than independent proof.
Possible earlier ancestry
The connected WikiTree structure proposes:

Generation
Person
Status
Earlier ancestor
Archibald Glasgow, husband of Isobell Neulands
Very early connection contains unresolved chronological problems
Later descendant
John Glasgow, born 30 August 1661 at Edinburgh, husband of Agnes Spark
Connected-tree relationship
Son
George Glasgow, husband of Margaret Martin
Connected-tree relationship
Son
John Glasgow, recorded 28 March 1740 at Irvine
Supported by indexed baptism

The descent from Archibald Glasgow is not established. The early connected tree contains a serious chronological conflict: Archibald's reported death predates the reported birth of one supposed son. Every generation before John Glasgow and Agnes Spark should therefore be independently verified.

The earlier marriage of Archibald Glasgow and Isobell Neulands may indicate a longstanding association between the Glasgow and Newlands families. It does not prove that the later Newlands connections in the descendants of John born in 1783 came through Isobell.
Alternative candidates
Another John Glasgow was baptised on 2 July 1721 at Kilwinning, a son of Hugh Glasgow and Janet Kilpatrick.

He could also have been the husband of Margaret Mill, but he would have been about 41 when Peter was baptised in 1762 and substantially older than Margaret. The 1740 Irvine John is therefore the better chronological match.

John Glasgow, baptised in 1750 at Mid Calder, can effectively be excluded as Peter's father under the current dates because he would have been only about twelve in 1762.

An otherwise unrecorded collateral John remains possible.
Research priorities
* Find the marriage or proclamation of John Glasgow and Margaret Mill.
* Examine the original West Calder baptism of Peter Glasgow dated 10 October 1762.
* Examine the original baptisms of Andrew, Margaret, Agnes, Issobel and Janet to confirm their mother.
* Trace the Irvine John through kirk-session records, tax rolls, land records, testaments and burials.
* Search Irvine, Kilwinning, Stevenston, West Calder and neighbouring parishes for evidence of the family's movement.
* Identify the Glasgow woman who married Alexander Hunter in 1800.
* Compare witnesses in the West Calder baptisms with George Glasgow, Margaret Martin and their known children.
* Treat the identification of John born in 1740 as Margaret Mill's husband as probable rather than proved until a direct bridging record is found.
* Treat the proposed descent from Archibald Glasgow as unproved until each intervening generation is documented.

Research Notes
Identification as Margaret Mill's husband

Child
Date
Place
George Glasgow
19 July 1729
Kilwinning, Ayrshire
Andrew Glasgow
21 May 1733
Irvine, Ayrshire
Elisabeth Glasgow
24 July 1737
Ayrshire
John Glasgow
28 March 1740
Irvine, Ayrshire
Robert Glasgow
5 June 1747
Irvine, Ayrshire

The repeated use of Andrew in the next generation is of particular interest. John and Margaret Mill reportedly named a son Andrew in 1764, and their son Peter later named another son Andrew in 1790.

Naming repetition is supportive but does not prove identity.

Son Peter and the Bathgate family
John and Margaret's son Peter, baptised in 1762, is probably the Peter or Patrick Glasgow who later had children with Elizabeth Dick at Bathgate.

Peter and Elizabeth's family included:

Child
Record date
Father as indexed
John Glasgow
6 July 1783
Patrick Glasgow
Margaret Glasgow
10 April 1785

Elizabeth Glasgow
17 June 1787
Peter Glasgow
Andrew Glasgow
11 April 1790
Peter Glasgow
William Glasgow
29 July 1792
Peter Glasgow
Agnes Glasgow
22 March 1795

2
Peter or Patrick Glasgow, baptised 1762 at West Calder
Baptism directly names John Glasgow and Margaret Mill
3
John Glasgow, born 1783 at Bathgate
Baptism names Patrick Glasgow; later Canongate identity strongly supported but circumstantial

Naming pattern
The family names recur across several generations:

George Glasgow and Margaret Martin
John Glasgow and Margaret Mill
Peter Glasgow and Elizabeth Dick
John Glasgow and Jean Bryce
George
Peter
John
Peter
Andrew
Andrew
Margaret
Peter
Elisabeth
Margaret
Elizabeth
John
John
Agnes
Andrew

William
Margaret

Janet
Agnes
William

Jean

Thomas Newlands

The recurrence of Andrew, Margaret, Agnes, John, Elizabeth and Peter is consistent with a single extended family. Most of the names were common, however, and the pattern cannot substitute for direct documentary evidence.

Wider family and migration pattern
The connected descendant tree places members of this broader Glasgow family in:

* Edinburgh during the seventeenth century;
* Kilwinning, Irvine and Stevenston in Ayrshire;
* Livingston, Mid Calder and West Calder;
* Bathgate in Linlithgowshire;

* Compare witnesses in the West Calder baptisms with George Glasgow, Margaret Martin and their known children.
* Treat the identification of John born in 1740 as Margaret Mill's husband as probable rather than proved until a direct bridging record is found.
