About John

John is known only from William Melanchthon Glasgow's late family history, which names him first among three sons of Hugh Glasgow and Margaret McCullough. The account supplies no birth date, residence, wife, child or death. The current about-1735 County Londonderry birth and about-1785 death are unsupported.

Summary of the research

Overall conclusion

No found record directly connects this John to Adam Glasgow or John Glasgow of Inishrush. He is chronologically capable of fathering both men, as is his traditional brother Robert. The late family history places their brother Hugh's family farm near Portglenone by 1780, independently consistent with the local 1740, 1772 and Inishrush evidence.

No evidence distinguishes this John from Robert-550 as the direct father. John born 1767 used John in the third-son position, which already repeats his own name; his first son Adam therefore points more naturally to an older Adam as paternal grandfather than to this profile. The existence of a second local Hugh householder in 1740 supplies a possible collateral root for that older Adam/Maria model.

  • The Times, 1799-05-02, p.3: no longer a candidate for this profile. 1799 Bow Street report: John Glasco, Esq., claiming to be an officer on the Staff, was committed for wounding patrolman John Smith after the play at Covent Garden. He cannot be identified; no WikiTree candidate has any London or army-staff record.

Tree effect

John remains a possible uncertain direct father, but is not preferred over Robert-550 by the current evidence. The older Adam/Maria model descending from the other 1740 Hugh is structurally cleaner. Do not insert the existing unidentified-father placeholder as this John's son: that would add an impossible extra generation between a man born in the mid-1730s and Adam born about 1758.
