He named sons John, Hugh, Alexander, and Robert; daughter Nancy; granddaughter Sarah, daughter of Alexander; and an unnamed wife. John and Robert were executors; Robert received the land/residue and had to support his mother. The will was proved 25 April 1831. Original recorded will, independently corroborated by the loose packet. Corrects the profile's source-list date of 26 March to 29 March. The profile already gives death about 1831 and already rejects the family history's 1824 claim. An internal scan and transcription are preserved in sources/, but the public Ancestry image—not the local transcription—is the WikiTree citation.

William Melanchthon Glasgow, History of the Glasgow Family, p. 2 The much later account calls the wife Sally Blair and lists seven children, including Clatworthy/Tatty and Mary, who are absent from the will. The will does not identify the wife or claim to list all children. Sally Blair remains derivative pending a contemporary marriage, deed, gravestone, or probate record.

Macafee entries 1195 and 1272 both have townland Not specified. Neither is this Hugh if his approximate 1739 birth is broadly correct. The status as householders in 1740 and this man's independently proved 1827 will plus 1780s-1790s children separate the generations. Belfast News-Letter, 14 April 1772 A Hugh Glasgow was among subscribers described as inhabitants of Tamlaght O'Crilly parish who surrendered arms to Henry Ellis of Inishrush. This Hugh could be the younger man, his father, or another namesake. The notice gives no age, occupation, kinship, or Hugh-specific townland.

  • Searches that found nothing: Findmypast has no Irish record of this Hugh before the family's 1796 emigration. The Irish Hugh Glasgow probate entries of 1825 and 1833 belong to Hugh of Drumgreenagh, County Armagh (Glasgow-4012), not this man. The only Tamlaght O'Crilly Hughs on Findmypast are the two 1740 householders (IRE/PRONI/1740PH/G/00359, /00360), who are an earlier generation. British Newspaper Archive searches for "Hugh Glasgow" with Tamlaght, Innisrush or Portglenone returned nothing.

Identity and family

Effect on Adam Glasgow parentage

Adam Glasgow of Inishrush was alive in 1827 and 1831 but is absent while Hugh individually names and benefits four sons. This materially weakens Hugh as Adam's father, but is not conclusive because the will does not say all my children and also omits two children from the late account.

The reported 1780 family farm near Portglenone, the 1740 Hugh beside an Inishrush-linked Ellis/McCullough collector group, and the 1772 parish Hugh together make this family a strong match to Adam and John of Inishrush's wider local Glasgow cluster. The account's statement that Hugh left many kin in Ireland strengthens a collateral placement. These facts do not prove a father-son or uncle-nephew link.

  • Both 1740 Tamlaght O'Crilly householders are high-confidence earlier-generation namesakes, not credible matches for this profile's Hugh under the approximate 1739 birth and independently documented 1827 survival.
  • The 1772 parish subscriber is chronologically compatible with this profile, but cannot be distinguished from either older Hugh using the notice alone. Preserve it as an unassigned free-space occurrence; do not add it to this profile or create another person from it.
  • The family history's August 1796 emigration passage concerns this Hugh's household. It should not be transferred to his father Glasgow-548.

  • False lead excluded: the apparently undated Ancestry hit for Sarah Glasgow (collection 8802, record 1779874) belongs to Will Book 45 (1886–94); record 1780245 and loose packet 924568 date her probate to 8 May 1894. She is not Hugh's widow, and the hit gives no support to the Sarah/Sally Blair tradition.
  • Route for further estate papers: the FamilySearch Allegheny County Estate Index (856 images for surname G, forenames A–R) uses the Russell index; Hugh's entry falls under G, key letter L, given-name H. The Pennsylvania State Archives guide maps Estate Index Ga–Gr to roll 74 and Orphans' Court 2B/2C to rolls 102 and 103. The thumbnails were too small to read, so no account or release is claimed found or absent.
  • North Hills Genealogists' Pioneer Cemeteries of Hampton Township every-name index lists an Alexander Glasgow (p. 16), John (pp. 17, 34) and Hugh (pp. 18, 19, 23, 33, 34). The inscriptions are not online and the index does not say which Alexander, John or Hugh is meant.
