Thomas Glasco
1766
Dublin, Ireland
About Thomas
This profile is not proved to be the Dublin watchmaker recorded at Christchurch Lane in 1779 and 20 Ormond Quay in 1783. Its uncertain birth about 1766 is an estimate based on a reported 1785 marriage to Mary King; neither the marriage nor Mary's dates has a substantive citation beyond a generic record index link. The estimate conflicts with adult status in 1779 but is too weak to exclude identity.

Summary of the research
Overall conclusion
The profile's attached parents, Glasco-144 and Duffy-6026, are likewise not established by its cited evidence. Do not add Miss Hynes, the watchmaker events, or another marriage, and do not use the 1779–1783 cluster to validate the attached parent-child chain.

Newspaper review, 5 October 2026
This is a chronologically compatible Thomas Glasco namesake for the 1799 Tinicum Island subscriber; no profile identification is proved.

Source findings
| Source | Finding | Assessment |
|---|---|---|
| Watson's 1783 directory | “Glasco, Thomas, Watch maker, 20, Ormond quay, 40/1.” | Direct trade and address evidence, but no age, spouse or parent. |
| Saunders's News-Letter, under 19 July 1779; transcription | Thomas Glasco of Christchurch Lane, watchmaker, married Miss Hynes of Ormond Quay. | Near-certain earlier occurrence of the 1783 tradesman. The next dated heading belongs to Christopher Harvey's death. |
| Glasco-143 and Mary King (King-67628), reviewed 8 September 2026 | The profiles report a 1785 marriage and estimate Thomas's birth as 1766 and Mary's as 1755. | The profiles give no marriage entry, image, parish, witnesses or other identity detail. A generic VRTI link is not evidence that this Thomas was the watchmaker. |

The Aurora, 9 April 1799, p.3 and 11 April, p.1 print one STOP THIEF notice signed Thomas Glascoe: $115 reportedly stolen from his Tinicum Island house on 31 March. The reward is twenty dollars for recovery of the money, or fifteen for the thief alone.
Source findingsFindmypast sweep — 7 October 2026
- New: the 1779 bride's name and two children. St Michan's Roman Catholic register, Dublin: Mary, baptised 5 December 1781, parents Thomas Glasco and Elizabeth (
IRE/PRS/BAP/3211466, imageIRE/PRS/MICROFILM08829-08/0064); John, baptised 17 September 1784, parents Thomas Glasco and Eliza Hynes (IRE/PRS/BAP/3212705, image.../0083). This is the first record found giving Miss Hynes's forename (Elizabeth/Eliza) and children for that marriage. St Michan's is the parish of Ormond Quay, where the watchmaker was at No. 20 in 1783, so these are very probably the watchmaker's children. Neither entry gives trade or address. - Adds detail to the known 1785 licence: the Dublin diocesan marriage licence index has Thomas Glasco and Mary King, 1785, p.216 (
IRE/IET0090/0424/012). If this is the same Thomas, Eliza (Hynes) must have died between September 1784 and 1785; no burial has been found. The licence is not evidence that this profile's Thomas was born about 1766. - New, bearing on parentage: Hibernian Journal, 11 January 1773, p.2 (BNA
BL/0000817/17730111/005), repeated in the same paper on 8, 10 and 22 February, 3, 5 and 22 March and 7 and 9 April 1773, and in Saunders's News-Letter, 12 March 1773, p.3 (BL/0001057/17730312/016). Full-page OCR of the 5 March issue (BL/0000817/17730305/010) reads, with long-s normalised: "THOMAS GLASCO, who served Apprenticeship to his Father, Philip Glasco, late [of] Christ-Church-lane, Watch-maker, and since had several Years Practice in London, takes this Method of informing his Friends and the Public, that he carries on the usual [business] at his said Father's House". The watchmaker of Christ Church Lane and later Ormond Quay was therefore very probably the son of Philip Glasco, watchmaker, not of Glasco-144. Whether this profile is that watchmaker is still unproved, but the attached father is now harder to sustain if he is. - Treble Almanack 1783 lists Thomas Glasco in the Dublin Directory (
IRE/IE0005/173/001); this is the same entry as the known Watson's 1783 listing.
Identity and family
Identity comparison and relationship caution
- Glasco-144 is directly supported as Margaret Duffy's 1773 groom, but no cited record proves he was this profile's father.
- Glasco-173 is directly supported as Sarah's father with wife Catherine in 1760, but no cited record proves he was Glasco-144's father.
- No inspected source proves that any of these three Thomases had serial marriages to Catherine, Margaret Duffy, Miss Hynes and Mary King.
Keep the watchmaker as a free-space documentary cluster unless an address-bearing marriage, baptism, burial, probate or trade record links him to this profile.
Identity assessment — 4 October 2026 newspaper review
The 5 October 1779 original advertisement and 4 April 1780 repeat name only Glasco, watch and clock maker, moving from Christ-Church-lane to 20 Ormond Quay near the market. The address supports the existing 1779–1783 Thomas trade cluster, but the newspaper gives no first name, spouse, parents or children and does not assign the event to this profile. Keep Glasco-143, Glasco-144 and Glasco-173 compatible under their current limits. See the consolidated sourced draft. No relationship change is proposed.
Identity and relationship assessments — newspaper review
The notice supplies residence but no age, relatives or migration link to this Dublin profile. Thomas is the reported victim; William Steel is the alleged thief. Check Tinicum tax, land, church and probate records before assignment. No family amendment is supported.

- The Public Register, or, Freeman's Journal, 1779-10-05, p.1: no longer a candidate for this profile. A repeated 1779–80 Freeman's Journal advertisement: Glasco, watch and clock maker, moves from Christ-Church-lane to 20 Ormond Quay. Two other records point to Thomas Glasco as the advertiser: a July 1779 marriage of '[Thomas] Glasco of Christchurch-lane, watchmaker' to Miss Hynes of Ormond-quay (Saunders's News-Letter extraction; forename supplied by the extractor), and Watson's 1783 directory entry 'Glasco, Thomas, Watch maker, 20 Ormond quay'. Which WikiTree Thomas he is remains unproved.

- Aurora General Advertiser, 1799-04-09, p.3: no longer a candidate for this profile. 'STOP THIEF': Thomas Glascoe reports $115 stolen from his house on Tinicum Island, near Chester on the Delaware, on 31 March 1799, by a man calling himself William Steel (notice dated 9 April 1799). No WikiTree profile fits this Thomas Glascoe; the Dublin-born Glasco profiles have no American record.

### Findmypast sweep — 7 October 2026 - **New: the 1779 bride's name and two children.** St Michan's Roman Catholic register, Dublin: **Mary**, baptised 5 December 1781, parents **Thomas Glasco and Elizabeth** (`IRE/PRS/BAP/3211466`, image `IRE/PRS/MICROFILM08829-08/0064`); **John**, baptised 17 September 1784, parents **Thomas Glasco and Eliza Hynes** (`IRE/PRS/BAP/3212705`, image `.../0083`). - **Adds detail to the known 1785 licence:** the Dublin diocesan marriage licence index has **Thomas Glasco** and **Mary King**, 1785, p.216 (`IRE/IET0090/0424/012`). If this is the same Thomas, Eliza (Hynes) must have died between September 1784 and 1785; no burial has been found. The licence is not evidence that this profile's Thomas was born about 1766. - **New, bearing on parentage:** *Hibernian Journal*, 11 January 1773, p.2 (BNA `BL/0000817/17730111/005`), repeated in the same paper on 8, 10 and 22 February, 3, 5 and 22 March and 7 and 9 April 1773, and in *Saunders's News-Letter*, 12 March 1773, p.3 (`BL/0001057/17730312/016`). Full-page OCR of the 5 March issue (`BL/0000817/17730305/010`) reads, with long-s normalised: "THOMAS GLASCO, who served Apprenticeship to his Father, Philip Glasco, late [of] Christ-Church-lane, Watch-maker, and since had several Years Practice in London, takes this Method of informing his Friends and the Public, that he carries on the usual [business] at his said Father's House". The watchmaker of Christ Church Lane and later Ormond Quay was therefore very probably the son of Philip Glasco, watchmaker, not of [[Glasco-144]]. Whether this profile is that watchmaker is still unproved, but the attached father is now harder to sustain if he is. - **Treble Almanack 1783** lists Thomas Glasco in the Dublin Directory (`IRE/IE0005/173/001`); this is the same entry as the known Watson's 1783 listing.
