John Glasgow

Biography
John Glasgow was born or baptised on 6 July 1679 in Kilwinning parish, Ayrshire, Scotland. He was the son of John Glasgow and Barbara Allison. "Old Parish Registers, Births and Baptisms," Scotland's People, index entry for JON GLASGOW, 6 July 1679, son of JON GLASGOW and BARBARA ALASON, Kilwinning, Ayrshire, parish number 599, frame 44. 

The surname of John's mother appears as Alason in the indexed record. Allison and Allason are possible spelling variants, but Alason should be retained as the recorded form unless the original image gives a different reading.

John may have moved from Kilwinning to the neighbouring parish of Stevenston as a young man. He is believed to have been the John Glasgow who had at least two sons with Margaret Cowan:

Kilwinning
John's baptism was entered in the register of Kilwinning parish. At that time the former chancel of Kilwinning Abbey was being used as the parish church. It remained in use until the present Abbey Church was built in 1775. Kilwinning kirk-session records survive from 1656. These records may contain further references to John's parents or other members of the Glasgow family, but they have not yet been fully examined.
Research NotesIdentification with the Stevenston family
The identification of the child baptised at Kilwinning in 1679 with the later father of John and Adam Glasgow in Stevenston is plausible but has not been proved by a record explicitly naming his parents.

The chronology is consistent. The John born or baptised in 1679 would have been about twenty-one or twenty-two when the younger John was born in 1701, and about twenty-six or twenty-seven when Adam was born in 1706.

A secondary account of the Stevenston kirk-session records states that a John Glasgow of Pipers-Heugh appeared before the session in April 1700. He requested a testimonial, which was initially refused after he was accused of stealing a goose on a Sunday and being drunk the preceding Saturday. He was publicly rebuked and was then granted the testimonial. This man was living in Stevenston shortly before the baptism of John Glasgow in 1701 and is a possible match for the John born in Kilwinning in 1679. The original kirk-session minute must be examined before treating the two men as identical.
Possible confusion with the minister of Kilbirnie
John's father has sometimes been identified as Rev. John Glasgow, minister of Kilbirnie. That relationship is not supported by the currently available evidence.

The published account of the minister states that he married first Jean Cunningham and secondly Margaret Scott. His recorded children were Robert, James, Margaret, William, Samuel, Janet, Elizabeth and Jean. Neither Barbara Alason nor a son John is included.
