How parent leads are calculated

Automated leads use birth surnames—not married surnames—as parental eligibility, role-specific biological age limits, bounded and approximate-date uncertainty, household chronology, specific time-aware localities, mapped distance, tenancy succession, migration destinations and sex-aware Scottish naming positions across generations. People already attached as the subject's parents stay in the identity summary and are excluded from this alternative-candidate list, regardless of relationship confidence. The main calibration uses clues available on disconnected profiles; existing parent and sibling links are retained as comparison context rather than treated as transferable evidence. Common ordered names and grandparent-to-child echoes receive a small non-zero weight, so a John or James match can support several independent criteria without producing a lead alone. Rare names, repeated bearers and bundles across otherwise distinct branches receive substantially more weight according to catalogue frequency. An exact migration place is weighted by its rarity and repetition across both branches; a shared destination country is worth only one point. Extra weight is added only when at least three independent clue types converge: naming, locality, specific migration, household chronology or collateral networks. Sparse profiles retain a clearly labelled chronology-only fallback instead of disappearing. Countries, states, counties and research clusters do not count as a shared locality, and fallback, broad representative or kin-inferred coordinates are excluded from distance scoring. Shared descendant profiles are removed before branch-name comparison. A candidate already recorded as a parent-in-law is excluded. A confident or independently supported parent is treated as settled; uncertain and unassessed attachments remain open to alternative comparison. A different linked parent, an uncle/aunt or grandparent path, and a matching existing child profile prevent an alternative from being classified as a strong direct-parent lead until the underlying tree conflict or duplicate is resolved. Familiar forms such as Bessie are normalised. Surname remains an eligibility filter worth zero points.

Naming customs, shared farms and occupations are circumstantial. Children, spouses and collateral relatives may be missing, and tree-derived family networks are not independent evidence. Scores rank research leads; they do not prove parentage.

How duplicate leads are calculated

Dates are eligibility gates, not merely deductions: chronologically impossible people are excluded. Dates, places, spouses, parent certainty and children's profiles and names are then compared. A high score is a prompt to inspect records, not a merge recommendation.

Current conclusion

Glasgow-3375

This profile represents the John Glasgow associated with Barbara Alason/Allason at Kilwinning in 1679 and 1689. It is not proved that his father was John Glasgow (Glasgow-1604).

He is a serious duplicate candidate for Rev. John Glasgow M.A. (Glasgow-1073), about 1653, Kilbirnie: same name, same estimated generation, adjacent parishes, and a last Barbara-family event in January 1689 before the minister married Jean Cunningham in January 1690. The minister had been ordained at Kilbirnie in August 1688, which does not exclude a Kilwinning family event five months later.

The identification remains unproved because neither *Fasti* nor Paterson mentions Barbara, and the index extracts do not give John's title, trade or residence.

Estimated_Birth_Date

Record-bearing passages

  • Biography John Glasgow was born before about 1661, probably in Scotland. His exact date and place of birth are unknown.
  • The estimated birth date is based on John being old enough to have a child baptised in July 1679. He may have been born considerably earlier.
  • John was living in, or otherwise associated with, the parish of Kilwinning, Ayrshire, Scotland, between 1679 and 1689.
  • Jon Glasgow, baptised on 6 July 1679 in Kilwinning, recorded as the son of Jon Glasgow and Barbara Alason. Kilwinning Old Parish Register, parish 599, frame 44, baptism of Jon Glasgow, 6 July 1679, son of Jon Glasgow and Barbara Alason.

    • Jannet Glasgow, baptised on 1 February 1689 in Kilwinning, recorded as the daughter of John Glasgow and a woman recorded by the surname Allason. Kilwinning Old Parish Register, parish 599, frame 75, baptism of Jannet Glasgow, 1 February 1689, daughter of John Glasgow and Allason.
  • The woman surnamed Allason in Jannet's baptism was probably the same Barbara Alason named in Jon's baptism. The surviving indexed entry does not give her forename.
  • Her surname may appear in records under several spellings, including Alason, Allason, Alison and Allison.
  • No marriage or proclamation record for John Glasgow and Barbara Alason has yet been identified. Barbara should therefore be described as John's probable wife or partner rather than as a proven legal spouse.
  • John was alive, or was at least named as the father, when Jannet was baptised in February 1689.
  • His date and place of death are unknown. Children John Glasgow and probably Barbara Alason had the following known children:

Biography
John Glasgow was born before about 1661, probably in Scotland. His exact date and place of birth are unknown.

The estimated birth date is based on John being old enough to have a child baptised in July 1679. He may have been born considerably earlier.

John was living in, or otherwise associated with, the parish of Kilwinning, Ayrshire, Scotland, between 1679 and 1689.

He had at least two known children:

* Jon Glasgow, baptised on 6 July 1679 in Kilwinning, recorded as the son of Jon Glasgow and Barbara Alason. Kilwinning Old Parish Register, parish 599, frame 44, baptism of Jon Glasgow, 6 July 1679, son of Jon Glasgow and Barbara Alason.
* Jannet Glasgow, baptised on 1 February 1689 in Kilwinning, recorded as the daughter of John Glasgow and a woman recorded by the surname Allason. Kilwinning Old Parish Register, parish 599, frame 75, baptism of Jannet Glasgow, 1 February 1689, daughter of John Glasgow and Allason.

The woman surnamed Allason in Jannet's baptism was probably the same Barbara Alason named in Jon's baptism. The surviving indexed entry does not give her forename.

Her surname may appear in records under several spellings, including Alason, Allason, Alison and Allison.

No marriage or proclamation record for John Glasgow and Barbara Alason has yet been identified. Barbara should therefore be described as John's probable wife or partner rather than as a proven legal spouse.

John was alive, or was at least named as the father, when Jannet was baptised in February 1689.

His date and place of death are unknown.
Children
John Glasgow and probably Barbara Alason had the following known children:

# Jon Glasgow, baptised 6 July 1679 at Kilwinning, Ayrshire.

# Jannet Glasgow, baptised 1 February 1689 at Kilwinning, Ayrshire.

There may have been other children whose baptisms were not recorded, whose records have not survived, or whose entries have not yet been identified.
Possible Parentage
John's parents have not been established.

Five Scottish baptism records have been identified for men named John or Johne Glasgow who were born within, or close to, a plausible period for the father of a child baptised in 1679.

None of these records currently provides a direct connection to Kilwinning, Barbara Alason, or the children Jon and Jannet Glasgow.
Johne Glasgow, son of Archbald Glasgow and Agnes Watsone
A Johne Glasgow was baptised on 27 April 1656 in South Leith, Midlothian, Scotland. He was recorded as the son of Archbald Glasgow and Agnes Watsone. FamilySearch, "Scotland, Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950," Johne Glasgow, baptised 27 April 1656, South Leith, Midlothian, Scotland, son of Archbald Glasgow and Agnes Watsone.

This Johne would have been about 23 years old when Jon Glasgow was baptised in 1679 and about 32 when Jannet was baptised in 1689.

He is a strong chronological candidate among the currently identified records.

However, South Leith is in Midlothian, while John's known children were baptised in Kilwinning, Ayrshire. No evidence has yet been found showing that this Johne moved to Ayrshire or was associated with Barbara Alason.

Archbald Glasgow and Agnes Watsone should not presently be attached as John's parents.
Johne Glasgow, son of Johne Glasgow
A Johne Glasgow was baptised on 22 April 1649 in Kirknewton and East Calder, Midlothian, Scotland. He was recorded as the son of another Johne Glasgow. FamilySearch, "Scotland, Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950," Johne Glasgow, baptised 22 April 1649, Kirknewton and East Calder, Midlothian, Scotland, son of Johne Glasgow. The indexed record does not name his mother.

This Johne would have been about 30 years old in 1679 and about 40 in 1689.

He is chronologically plausible, but no evidence currently links him or his father with Kilwinning or Barbara Alason.

The elder Johne Glasgow should not presently be attached as John's father.
John Glasgow, son of Thomas Glasgow and Hellin Bryse
A John Glasgow was baptised on 25 February 1644 in Linlithgow, Linlithgowshire, Scotland. He was recorded as the son of Thomas Glasgow and Hellin Bryse. FamilySearch, "Scotland, Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950," John Glasgow, baptised 25 February 1644, Linlithgow, Linlithgowshire, Scotland, son of Thomas Glasgow and Hellin Bryse.

This John would have been about 35 years old in 1679 and about 45 in 1689.

He is chronologically plausible, but no evidence has yet been found connecting him or his parents with Kilwinning or Barbara Alason.

Thomas Glasgow and Hellin Bryse should not presently be attached as John's parents.
Johne Glasgow, son of Johne Glasgow and Margaret Sluman
A Johne Glasgow was baptised on 4 April 1639 in Duddingston, Midlothian, Scotland. He was recorded as the son of Johne Glasgow and Margaret Sluman. FamilySearch, "Scotland, Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950," Johne Glasgow, baptised 4 April 1639, Duddingston, Midlothian, Scotland, son of Johne Glasgow and Margaret Sluman.

This Johne would have been about 40 years old in 1679 and about 50 in 1689.

He is chronologically possible, but no record currently links him with Kilwinning or Barbara Alason.

Johne Glasgow and Margaret Sluman should not presently be attached as John's parents.
Johne Glasgow, son of James Glasgow and Agnes Duncan
A Johne Glasgow was baptised on 30 August 1661 in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. He was recorded as the son of James Glasgow and Agnes Duncan. FamilySearch, "Scotland, Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950," Johne Glasgow, baptised 30 August 1661, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland, son of James Glasgow and Agnes Duncan.

This Johne would have been approximately 17 years and 10 months old when Jon Glasgow was baptised on 6 July 1679. He would probably have been about 17 when the child was conceived.

He cannot be excluded entirely, but he is a less likely candidate because of his young age. His baptism also falls slightly later than John's estimated birth date of before about 1661.

No evidence has been found connecting him with Kilwinning or Barbara Alason.

James Glasgow and Agnes Duncan should not presently be attached as John's parents.
Parentage Assessment
The candidates may be ranked by chronological plausibility as follows:

# Johne Glasgow, baptised in 1656 at South Leith — about 23 years old in 1679.

# Johne Glasgow, baptised in 1649 at Kirknewton and East Calder — about 30 years old in 1679.

# John Glasgow, baptised in 1644 at Linlithgow — about 35 years old in 1679.

# Johne Glasgow, baptised in 1639 at Duddingston — about 40 years old in 1679.

# Johne Glasgow, baptised in 1661 at Edinburgh — about 17 years old in 1679.

This ranking concerns age only. It is not evidence that the higher-ranked candidates were more closely connected to the Kilwinning family.

All five men were baptised in Midlothian or Linlithgowshire. The John Glasgow represented by this profile is currently known only from the baptism records of his children in Kilwinning, Ayrshire.

No candidate has yet been shown to have:

* lived in Kilwinning or elsewhere in Ayrshire;
* married or formed a household with Barbara Alason;
* fathered Jon Glasgow or Jannet Glasgow;
* used an occupation or territorial designation matching the Kilwinning records;
* shared relatives, witnesses, neighbours or associates with the Kilwinning family.

The absence of a matching Ayrshire baptism does not prove that John was born elsewhere. Scottish Old Parish Registers are incomplete, and some baptisms were never recorded or have not survived.

John's parents should remain unknown until additional evidence links one of these baptism records to the Kilwinning family.
Research NotesOriginal Kilwinning Records
The original images of the Kilwinning baptism entries should be examined rather than relying only on abbreviated index entries.

The images may contain information omitted from the index, including:

* John's occupation;
* a farm, village or residence;
* the mother's full name;
* witnesses or sponsors;
* whether the child was described as lawful or natural;
* marginal notes.
Marriage Search
A marriage or proclamation record should be sought for John Glasgow and Barbara Alason before July 1679.

Relevant parishes include:

* Kilwinning;
* Irvine;
* Stevenston;
* Kilbirnie;
* Dalry;
* Beith;
* Ardrossan;
* other nearby Ayrshire parishes.

Searches should include variants such as:

* John Glasgow;
* Johne Glasgow;
* Jon Glasgow;
* John Glasgo;
* Barbara Alason;
* Barbara Allason;
* Barbara Alison;
* Barbara Allison.
Kirk Session Records
Kilwinning kirk-session records may contain references to John Glasgow or Barbara Alason.

These records may be useful if:

* the couple married irregularly;
* a child was born outside a formally recorded marriage;
* the family received parish assistance;
* either parent was disciplined by the kirk session;
* the family moved into or out of the parish.
Other Records to Search
Potentially useful sources include:

* testaments and inventories;
* sasines;
* land and tenancy records;
* tax rolls;
* hearth-tax records;
* poll-tax records;
* communion rolls;
* kirk-session minutes;
* burial registers;
* mortcloth accounts.

Records involving Archbald Glasgow, Agnes Watsone, Thomas Glasgow, Hellin Bryse, Margaret Sluman, James Glasgow, Agnes Duncan or the elder Johne Glasgow should be checked for later appearances in Ayrshire.
Identity and duplicate assessment
This Kilwinning John is a serious same-person candidate for Rev. John Glasgow M.A.: the name and estimated generation agree, Kilwinning and Kilbirnie are neighbouring Ayrshire parishes, and the last indexed Barbara-family event in February 1689 preceded the minister's January 1690 marriage to Jean Cunningham. The chronology permits the identification but does not prove it.

Neither Fasti Ecclesiae Scoticanae nor Paterson's county history mentions Barbara Alason, and the available index extracts do not give this John a title, occupation or residence that would identify him as the minister. Fasti Ecclesiae Scoticanae, vol. 3, p. 103, PDF (https://electricscotland.com/bible/fastiecclesiaesc03scot.pdf); James Paterson, History of the County of Ayr, pp. 252-253, scan (https://archive.org/details/historyofcountyo02pateuoft/page/252/mode/2up). Glasgow-3375 and Glasgow-1073 must therefore remain separate unless the full Kilwinning OPR pages or another identifying record supplies a bridge.

The attached father John Glasgow and the links to John Glasgow and Jannet Glasgow are retained as uncertain. William Glasgow should not be moved between adult family groups without direct evidence.

He was recorded as the son of Thomas Glasgow and Hellin Bryse.

* lived in Kilwinning or elsewhere in Ayrshire;
* married or formed a household with Barbara Alason;
* fathered Jon Glasgow or Jannet Glasgow;
* used an occupation or territorial designation matching the Kilwinning records;

Research Notes
Original Kilwinning Records
The original images of the Kilwinning baptism entries should be examined rather than relying only on abbreviated index entries.

The images may contain information omitted from the index, including:

* John's occupation;
* a farm, village or residence;
* the mother's full name;
* witnesses or sponsors;
* whether the child was described as lawful or natural;
* marginal notes.

Marriage Search
A marriage or proclamation record should be sought for John Glasgow and Barbara Alason before July 1679.

Relevant parishes include:

* Kilwinning;
* Irvine;
* Stevenston;
* Kilbirnie;
* Dalry;
* Beith;
* Ardrossan;
* other nearby Ayrshire parishes.

Searches should include variants such as:

* John Glasgow;
* Johne Glasgow;
* Jon Glasgow;
* John Glasgo;
* Barbara Alason;
* Barbara Allason;
* Barbara Alison;
* Barbara Allison.

Kirk Session Records
Kilwinning kirk-session records may contain references to John Glasgow or Barbara Alason.

These records may be useful if:

* the couple married irregularly;
* a child was born outside a formally recorded marriage;
* the family received parish assistance;
* either parent was disciplined by the kirk session;
* the family moved into or out of the parish.

Other Records to Search
Potentially useful sources include:

* testaments and inventories;
* sasines;
* land and tenancy records;
* tax rolls;
* hearth-tax records;
* poll-tax records;
* communion rolls;
* kirk-session minutes;
* burial registers;
* mortcloth accounts.
