Summary of the research

Overall conclusion

The newly checked 1734 ship-share catalogue describes a deceased John Glasgow, shipmaster, while the 1740 legal-process entry names a living Bailie John Glasgow, merchant. Those are distinct men. The 1740 bailie is a plausible occurrence of the later provost on Glasgow-1077; that profile's 1690 baptism rules him out as the adult father in 1693. Neither identification is assumed for this profile without a direct record bridge.

Glasgow-1434, baptised in 1679 at Kilwinning and later associated with Stevenston, remains an open candidate for part of this reconstruction. The alleged duplicate-son conflict is not enough to exclude him, but his young age in 1693 and lack of a burgh-record bridge prevent a merge.

Source findings

The 1721 Irvine prize bond, printed in Muniments of the Royal Burgh of Irvine, II, p. 133, lists “John Glasgow for one” among residents pledging a half crown for the annual shooting prize. It could concern this profile's proposed 1725 skipper, but gives no trade, kin or other bridge. The reference was added to the live WikiTree Research Notes as an unassigned same-name lead, not a new identity conclusion.

The same volume's 1669–70 town account, p. 272, records the provost with “John Glasgow ffor stones to the bridge” on 21 July. Its date falls within the account opened 7 October 1669. The record does not identify the 1693 father, 1725 skipper or 1740 bailie. It establishes another earlier John occurrence at Irvine, with no demonstrated connection to this profile. The printed page images were checked on 26 September 2026.

The locally recovered Irvine Burgh Catalogue (2017) supplied three further entries, each checked against the PDF page image. IB2/15/45, p. 160, a bond of 15 March 1729, names “John Glasgow elder, skiller in Irvine,” as treasurer of the Sailors' Poor Box; “skiller” is the catalogue's printed word. He is a strong but unproved candidate for the 1725 “elder” skipper. IB2/14/52, p. 145, 30 January 1734, describes a ship share belonging to the heirs of the late John Glasgow, shipmaster. He died before that date and may have been the 1725 skipper or 1729 treasurer. IB2/1/70, p. 70, dated 1740, names Bailie John Glasgow, merchant, in a summons. The deceased 1734 shipmaster and living 1740 bailie are necessarily distinct, so the profile's combined 1725/1740 proposition cannot simply be assumed. Whether the 1725 skipper was the 1734 deceased shipmaster or the 1740 bailie remains to be tested in the original records. These references were added to the live WikiTree Research Notes without changing family links or existing vital fields. Archived catalogue citation; the remote archived file was incomplete when recovered locally, so the exact archive references are essential.

Glasgow-1077, associated with later Irvine provost service, is a plausible candidate for the 1740 bailie. His 9 December 1690 Kilbirnie baptism rules him out as the adult father in the 1693 baptism proposition on Glasgow-3018. The bailie entry still does not prove identity with Glasgow-1077. Conclusion

This profile combines at least three propositions: father John with Agnes
Martine in the 1693 baptism, `John Glasgow elder`, skipper in 1725, and bailie
in 1740. The records share name and Irvine, but the biography itself says the
1693 baptism may concern another John. The combined identity is not proved.

The newly checked 1734 ship-share catalogue describes a deceased John Glasgow,
shipmaster, while the 1740 legal-process entry names a living Bailie John
Glasgow, merchant. Those are distinct men. The 1740 bailie is a plausible
occurrence of the later provost on Glasgow-1077; that profile's 1690 baptism
rules him out as the adult father in 1693. Neither identification is assumed
for this profile without a direct record bridge.

[Glasgow-1434](https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Glasgow-1434), baptised in 1679 at
Kilwinning and later associated with Stevenston, remains an open candidate for
part of this reconstruction. The alleged duplicate-son conflict is not enough
to exclude him, but his young age in 1693 and lack of a burgh-record bridge
prevent a merge.

The [1721 Irvine prize bond](https://electricscotland.com/history/gazetteer/MunimentsoftheroyalburghofIrvine02.pdf#page=160), printed in *Muniments of the Royal Burgh of Irvine*, II, p. 133, lists “John Glasgow for one” among residents pledging a half crown for the annual shooting prize. It could concern this profile's proposed 1725 skipper, but gives no trade, kin or other bridge. The reference was added to the live WikiTree Research Notes as an **unassigned same-name lead**, not a new identity conclusion.

The same volume's [1669–70 town account](https://electricscotland.com/history/gazetteer/MunimentsoftheroyalburghofIrvine02.pdf#page=299), p. 272, records the provost with “John Glasgow ffor stones to the bridge” on 21 July. Its date falls within the account opened 7 October 1669. The record does not identify the 1693 father, 1725 skipper or 1740 bailie. It establishes another earlier John occurrence at Irvine, with no demonstrated connection to this profile. The printed page images were checked on 26 September 2026.

The locally recovered *Irvine Burgh Catalogue* (2017) supplied three further entries, each checked against the PDF page image. **IB2/15/45, p. 160**, a bond of 15 March 1729, names “John Glasgow elder, skiller in Irvine,” as treasurer of the Sailors' Poor Box; “skiller” is the catalogue's printed word. He is a strong but unproved candidate for the 1725 “elder” skipper. **IB2/14/52, p. 145**, 30 January 1734, describes a ship share belonging to the heirs of the *late* John Glasgow, shipmaster. He died before that date and may have been the 1725 skipper or 1729 treasurer. **IB2/1/70, p. 70**, dated 1740, names Bailie John Glasgow, merchant, in a summons. The deceased 1734 shipmaster and living 1740 bailie are necessarily distinct, so the profile's combined 1725/1740 proposition cannot simply be assumed. Whether the 1725 skipper was the 1734 deceased shipmaster or the 1740 bailie remains to be tested in the original records. These references were added to the live WikiTree Research Notes without changing family links or existing vital fields. His [9 December 1690 Kilbirnie baptism](https://www.findmypast.co.uk/transcript?id=SCOT%2FOPR%2FBAP%2F3585655&tab=this) rules him out as the adult father in the 1693 baptism proposition on Glasgow-3018.
