Biography
Robert Glasgow was born on 1 September 1827 at Kilrea, County
Londonderry, Ireland. He was a son of Daniel Glasgow
and Margaret Irwin. Robert was baptised in the First
Presbyterian congregation of Kilrea on 30 September 1827. Richard John Torrens,

The transcription says that Daniel and Margaret were of Kilrea.
Kilrea should therefore be used as Robert's birthplace unless examination
of the original register shows that the residence statement applied only
to his parents and that he was born elsewhere.

Because the entry provides an exact birth date, Robert's birth should not

Margaret as Daniel's wife. No marriage entry for Daniel and Margaret has

The spelling Glasco is treated as a variant or printing error for
Glasgow because Daniel appears as Glasgow in the church, valuation,
newspaper and probate records.

Robert may have learned his father's trade, but no evidence has been
found identifying Robert as a watchmaker, clockmaker or apprentice. No
occupation should therefore be entered.

Daniel was later recorded as an occupier at Church Street, Kilrea, and

David Glasgow, the prominent watchmaker and horological writer born at
Coleraine in 1824, remains a possible member of Daniel's family.

The circumstantial case is:

* David was born before Robert and James;
* Coleraine was close to Kilrea;
* David followed the same specialised trade as Daniel;
* James's description as Daniel's third son requires two older sons.

However, no source has been found naming Daniel and Margaret as David's
parents or naming David as Robert's brother.

David should not be attached as Robert's brother until a civil marriage
