Robert Glasgow

Biography
Samuel Glasgow was born about 1801 in Ireland. A later death notice described him as formerly of Kilrea and said that he emigrated in 1831. The transcription calls its source a “Prescott, U.S. American paper,” an unresolved geographic anomaly; the matching merchant lived at Prescott, Canada West. 

Samuel became a merchant at Prescott. The 1851 Canada Directory listed “Glasgow, Samuel, general store, Main st.” Robert W. S. Mackay, The Canada Directory (Montreal, 1851) (https://numerique.banq.qc.ca/patrimoine/details/52327/5139192), Prescott entry for Samuel Glasgow. In the original 1851 census he was a Presbyterian storekeeper, born in Ireland and aged 51 at his next birthday. His household occupied lines 11–18 on Prescott enumeration page 31. All eight were recorded as Presbyterians. Orena's rare name and compatible age recur in a transcription of the 1861 Prescott grammar-school census, where she was associated with Samuel Glasgow, storekeeper. “Black Walnuts, Squirrels and Prescott High School,” The Past Around Us (https://thepastaroundus.wordpress.com/2015/10/12/black-walnuts-squirrels-and-prescott-high-school/), 1861 entry for Orena Glasgow, aged 17 (accessed 13 August 2026). 

A descendant's local history says that Samuel had ten children, six of whom survived, and names later sons Thomas Crichton, born 1853, and Henry, born 1857 and dying young. Those two later births plus the eight people appearing as children in 1851 form a coherent ten-child reconstruction, but original birth, baptism or estate records are still needed to prove each relationship.

The 1866–67 Fuller directory listed Samuel as a general dealer on King Street. Fuller's Counties of Leeds, Grenville, Lanark and Renfrew Directory for 1866 & 1867 (https://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/obj/001075/f2/nlc008163.pdf), Prescott entry for Samuel Glasgow. The death-notice transcription published on 29 January 1867 said he had died at Prescott after becoming a successful merchant and left a widow and a wealthy family. Local history dates his death to 1866 and identifies the family burial place as Sandy Hill Presbyterian Cemetery. 
Research Notes
A later title-chain account calls early Prescott shipbuilder Robert Glasgow Samuel's father, says Robert left his house to six children, and says Samuel bought his siblings' shares. This is credible local-history evidence but not an inspected contemporary kinship record. Do not attach Robert until the underlying deed or estate file is read.

A derivative Leeds and Grenville estate index gives Samuel an estate year of 1875, conflicting with his reported 1866 death. The original file must be inspected to determine whether this is a delayed proceeding, a different man or an indexing error.

The local One Tree export and public WikiTree indexing were searched again on 13 August 2026. No profile matches this Irish-born Prescott merchant. Samuel Glasgow of Lisnagaver remained in Ireland in 1851 and is excluded. Other same-name profiles have incompatible places, ages or families.

The 1851 Prescott census transcription includes two child names read as Alba and Lycania Glasgow, and later tradition supplies a Robert born about 1835. The readings of Alba and Lycania are uncertain and have not been supported by separate records; they are retained as household research leads rather than newly created child profiles.
