Daniel Glasgow

Biography
Daniel Glasgow was born about 1795 or 1796 in Ireland. He became a
watchmaker and farmer at Kilrea, County Londonderry. His original death return
records that he died there on 16 October 1871, aged seventy-five, a widower and

Daniel was probably married to Margaret Irwin. A Rasharkin Presbyterian
baptismal record identifies Robert, born in 1827, as a child of Daniel Glasgow

The known or probable children are:

* Robert Glasgow, baptised in 1827;
* James Glasgow, an artist whose 1853 death notice called him Daniel's third son;
* Daniel Glasgow junior, a probable son identified by the local junior designation and chronology; and
* David Glasgow, directly identified as Daniel's son in Daniel's will. Daniel's will, proved in 1871, names his son David, his late brother Thomas
Glasgow and his nephew Daniel Neely Glasgow. A descendant family account identifies Alexander Glasgow and Rosanna, surname unknown as the parents of Thomas Glasgow of Lisnagaver. Daniel's original will explicitly calls Thomas his brother. If the descendant account correctly identifies Thomas's parents, Alexander and Rosanna are therefore plausible parents of Daniel as well.

No contemporary record inspected directly names Daniel's parents. Alexander and Rosanna should remain attached as uncertain parents. The evidence does not exclude a half-sibling relationship, an error in the descendant account or another reconstruction of the family.

Rosanna's surname has not been identified. No inspected source supports the surname Shaw.
Margaret Irwin
The Kilrea First Presbyterian baptism register names Daniel Glasgow and Margaret Irwin of Kilrea as the parents of their son Robert. Robert was born on 1 September 1827 and baptised on 30 September. The transcription does not expressly call Margaret Daniel's wife, but they were probably married. Daniel was described as a widower when he died in 1871. Margaret may be attached as Daniel's uncertain spouse. Their marriage date and place are unknown.

* David Glasgow, born at Coleraine in 1824 and later a prominent watchmaker in London. Daniel's will explicitly described David Glasgow of the City of London as “my son” and left him the residue of the estate. David, Robert and James account for three sons born before the younger Daniel. The previously proposed unidentified elder son is therefore not required.

Margaret Irwin is proved as Robert's mother. She may also have been the mother of Daniel's other children, but no inspected source establishes that relationship.

The probate calendar later described Daniel as a farmer, while his death registration called him a watchmaker. He may have combined watchmaking with farming or held agricultural land later in life.

Griffith's Valuation also lists men named Daniel Glasgow and Robert Glasgow at Gortereghy in Rasharkin parish. The Daniel entry probably refers to the Kilrea watchmaker and farmer, but the name-only valuation entry does not directly establish his identity. PRONI valuation revision books place Robert Glasgow at Gortereghy house 18c in about 1864–1865. The adjoining house 18b was occupied by Daniel McCochrane, not Daniel Glasgow. The Robert at Gortereghy was probably Robert Glasgow, proved son of Alexander Glasgow, rather than Daniel's son Robert. If Alexander was Daniel's brother, Robert would have been Daniel's nephew. Neither the proposed sibling relationship nor the interpretation of the Gortereghy entries has been proved.

The records do not establish that Daniel and Robert occupied adjoining houses or that they were father and son.
Brother Thomas and the Lisnagaver family
Daniel's original will refers to “my late brother Thomas Glasgow” and leaves a legacy to his nephew Daniel Neely Glasgow. 

Daniel Neely Glasgow married Mary Jane Boyd at Boveedy First Presbyterian Church on 28 June 1888. He was described as a farmer of Lisnagaver and named his father as Thomas Glasgow, farmer. IrishGenealogy.ie (https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/), civil marriage registration of Daniel Neely Glasgow and Mary Jane Boyd, 28 June 1888, Boveedy First Presbyterian Church; groom's father recorded as Thomas Glasgow, farmer (accessed 17 July 2026). 

Together these records establish that:

* Daniel had a brother named Thomas;
* Daniel Neely Glasgow was Daniel's nephew;
* Daniel Neely's father was Thomas Glasgow; and
* the family was connected with Lisnagaver.

The two-record evidence chain identifies Daniel's brother as Thomas Glasgow of Lisnagaver. Thomas may be attached as Daniel's certain brother.

A Thomas Glasgow aged 55 was registered in the Ballymoney district during the second quarter of 1870. The age and district fit Thomas of Lisnagaver, who was described as Daniel's late brother in 1871, but the original civil register image is unavailable. The index entry alone does not conclusively identify him or name his parents. Possible brother Alexander
Alexander Glasgow of the Lisnagaver and Rasharkin area may also have been Daniel's brother.

The proposed relationship is supported by locality, connections with Thomas's family and the probable Gortereghy link, but no inspected record explicitly calls Alexander and Daniel brothers. Alexander should therefore remain attached, if at all, as an uncertain brother.

Daniel, Thomas and Alexander form a probable Bann Valley–Killoquin or Kilrea–Rasharkin family cluster. Only Daniel's relationship to Thomas is directly proved.
Death and will
Daniel died at Kilrea on 16 October 1871, aged 75. His death registration described him as a widower and watchmaker. 

His recorded age gives an estimated birth in about 1795 or 1796. It does not provide an exact birth date.

A derivative index was previously read as naming Peter Glasgow at Daniel's death. The original civil image instead clearly names Kate Glasgow, present at death, Kilrea. It states no relationship, so Kate should not be attached as a daughter or other relative without further evidence. 

Daniel's will was proved at Londonderry by Samuel Neely of Kilrea, assistant land agent and sole executor. His effects were valued at under £300. 

The original will named:

* David Glasgow of the City of London, his son;
* Thomas Glasgow, his late brother; and
* Daniel Neely Glasgow, his nephew. 

The will does not name Adam Glasgow, Rose Glasgow, James Glasgow of Inishrush or any property at Inishrush. This omission does not prove that Daniel had no connection with that family, but the will provides no support for attaching him as a son of Adam Glasgow of Inishrush.

Daniel's burial place has not been identified.

The original death image identifies Kate Glasgow as the informant. 

The only Kate active in Ireland at this time was Catherine Glasgow

Alexander Glasgow and Rosanna Unknown are retained as uncertain
parents. A descendant account identifies them as Thomas's parents; because
Daniel's will proves Thomas was Daniel's brother, they are plausible parents of

Daniel's death age corrects his estimated birth from about 1807 to about
1795/96. That change also requires the proposed parents to be born earlier than
previous estimates. Adam Glasgow and Rose should not be placed
above this family; Rose's age excludes her as the older Alexander's mother.

Alexander Glasgow of Lisnagaver is a probable brother of Daniel
and Thomas, not a proved one. The local cluster and Y-DNA support common paternal
kinship, but no found record states the relationship.

Register coverage
The surviving First Kilrea Presbyterian baptism register begins on 17 April 1825, about thirty years after Daniel's estimated birth. It therefore cannot contain Daniel's own baptism.

A search of the available 1825–1859 baptism transcription found only the known 1827 baptism of Robert, son of Daniel and Margaret. The transcribed 1825–1845 marriage pages contain no marriage for Daniel Glasgow.

PRONI valuation revision books place Robert Glasgow at Gortereghy house 18c in about 1864–1865. If Alexander was Daniel's brother, Robert would have been Daniel's nephew. Neither the proposed sibling relationship nor the interpretation of the Gortereghy entries has been proved.

A derivative index was previously read as naming Peter Glasgow at Daniel's death. The original civil image instead clearly names '''Kate Glasgow''', present at death, Kilrea. Daniel's will was proved at Londonderry by Samuel Neely of Kilrea, assistant land agent and sole executor. His effects were valued at under £300.<ref name="Probate1871" />
