About Daniel

Daniel Glasgow was a watchmaker of Church Street, Kilrea, who died there a widower on 16 October 1871, aged 75 according to his civil death registration. His 1871 will names his son David Glasgow (Glasgow-3899) of the City of London and his late brother Thomas, shown by his nephew Daniel Neely Glasgow's 1888 marriage to be Thomas Glasgow (Glasgow-987) of Lisnagaver. An 1827 baptism names his son Robert (Glasgow-3897) by Margaret Irwin, and an 1853 death notice calls James Glasgow (Glasgow-3898) his third son. His parents are not established: Alexander Glasgow (Glasgow-3904) and Rosanna (Unknown-761034) are uncertain working parents drawn from descendant testimony about Thomas.

Original Prescott conveyances, 13 September 2026

The original 30 July 1861 deed, B465 now identifies Daniel of Kilrea, watchmaker, and Thomas of Lisnagaver, farmer, with wives Margaret and Mary Anne, as the men selling interests under Robert’s will. Their identity with Daniel-3896 and Thomas-987 is established by the combined places, occupations, wives and earlier brotherhood evidence. The siblings’ parents remain unnamed. Robert, Samuel, John, Daniel and Thomas belong to the same will-defined sibling group, with sister Mary and brother James’s children also named. No contemporary parent names follow, and Alexander-951 is not proved to be another brother.

Eliza Jane and Mary of Rochester are the carpenter’s eldest and second eldest daughters; their ninth shares do not fit a simple division of Robert’s sixth for James’s children. The carpenter’s identity with Robert’s brother remains a property-based hypothesis.

The original C298 deed, 15 September 1869, registered 1 July 1870, identifies Mary Black, formerly Mary Glasgow, as Robert’s sister, and names children John Black (wife Martha) and Rose Ann Black at Drumoolish, Jane Miller (wife of Robert Miller), Agnes and deceased Elizabeth Black at Newburgh, and Thomasina Montgomery (wife of Mathew) at Legrand, Iowa. This establishes the Black collateral branch; it does not name the siblings’ parents. The original C114 identifies James’s son Alexander as a Rochester express agent, whose identity with Alexander-951 remains unproved.

Source findings — Belfast death notices, 3 October 2026

The Belfast Evening Telegraph, 21 October 1871, p.3 and Belfast News-Letter, 21 October 1871, p.1 both report that Daniel Glasgow died on 16 October at his residence, Church Street, Kilrea. The Telegraph gives age 75; the News-Letter gives age 73. The surname passages were inspected in both original scans. These are two appearances of the same notice, not two independent accounts of his age.

The name, locality and exact death date identify the man as Daniel Glasgow-3896, the will-proved brother of Thomas Glasgow-987 of Lisnagaver. Church Street corroborates Daniel's already recorded valuation address at the time of his death. The News-Letter age 73 conflicts with the civil register's 75, corroborated by the Telegraph: the News-Letter implies birth about 1797/98 rather than about 1795/96. Retain the register-based birth estimate with the discrepancy stated; neither age is an exact birth record. No parentage or relationship confidence changes.

Next check: Daniel's burial or memorial and Church Street valuation revisions may resolve the age discrepancy and document the household after his death. The notices name no wife, children, parents or informant.

Age-reading correction — 4 October 2026

Fresh visual inspection of the retained original captures corrects the 3 October assessment that both newspapers gave 73. The Evening Telegraph prints 75; the News-Letter prints 73. The Telegraph corroborates the civil age 75; the News-Letter discrepancy remains. No exact birth date or relationship changes follow.

1858–59: Griffith's Valuation for Kilrea lists Daniel Glasgow in Church Street and a Daniel Glasgow with a holding at Claragh.
1831: the County Londonderry census place index lists a household of "Danl. Glasgow" (the compiler queries "Glosger") in Kilrea town.

All three were seen as online copies or transcriptions. The directory and the Church Street entry fit this Daniel, the Kilrea watchmaker who died in Church Street on 16 October 1871; the 1831 entry probably does too. The Claragh holding may be his or another Daniel's; its tenement details have not been compared.

Daniel Glasgow's original 1871 will directly identifies David Glasgow of the City of London as his son. It also identifies Daniel's late brother Thomas Glasgow and nephew Daniel Neely Glasgow. The will names no Adam, Rose, James, or Inishrush relative and does not support Daniel's current attachment as a child of Adam Glasgow of Inishrush.

Daniel's original death registration now fixes his death at Kilrea on 16 October 1871, aged 75, and records him as a widowed watchmaker. It names Kate Glasgow as the person present at death, but does not state Kate's relationship.

Daniel belongs in the Bann Valley-Killoquin / Kilrea-Rasharkin cluster with his proved brother Thomas Glasgow-987 and possible brother or cousin Alexander Glasgow-951.

Follow-up on Thomas's son Daniel Neely has opened a potentially direct parent route. The younger man's twins were born in September 1889 while their father, a labourer, resided in New York. An Irish-born cemetery labourer named Daniel Glascow died at Troy on 12 February 1931 (New York certificate 9941). He is a strong but unproved candidate for Daniel Neely; his death certificate could name Thomas and Mary Ann McCracken.

Live-profile audit 19 July 2026: the structured parents have been changed to Alexander Glasgow-3904 and Rosanna Unknown-761034, but the biography still has the obsolete Adam section and the structured birth remains before 1807. Glasgow-951. Older Alexander Glasgow-3904 and Rosanna Unknown are useful uncertain working parents, not proved parents.

Daniel must not be used as a proved child or descendant of Adam when reconstructing Adam's parents. His inferred birth about 1796 is compatible with Adam's household chronologically, but compatibility is not relationship evidence.

Adam should not be retained above the older Alexander merely to connect the cluster to Inishrush. Adam's wife Rose is chronologically excluded as the older Alexander's mother, and no source identifies Adam as his father.

The will exposed the conflict in the former tree, which made Daniel Thomas's uncle. The revised working tree places Daniel and Thomas together as brothers and uses Alexander and Rosanna as uncertain parents. The will does not identify which parent the brothers shared, so this parentage remains provisional.

Identity cautions

The will plus Daniel Neely's marriage now strongly identifies late brother Thomas as Thomas Glasgow of the Lisnagaver family; retain the two-record proof chain rather than citing either record alone.

Griffith's Valuation for Rasharkin lists Daniel and Robert Glasgow at Gortereghy. Daniel is probably this Kilrea watchmaker/farmer, but the name-only valuation is not a direct identification. (Revised 7 October 2026: a second candidate, Daniel of Culmore, Glasgow-3475, is now known, and this identity is reduced to possible; see below.) The Robert was most likely younger Robert Glasgow-938, proved son of Alexander Glasgow-951, whose 1866 marriage links Lisnagaver and Gortereghy. If younger Alexander was Daniel's brother, the two occupiers were uncle and nephew. This supports the proposed Daniel-Alexander collateral relationship but does not prove it.

PRONI revision books VAL/12/B/4/17A and 17B refine the land clue. They place Robert Glasgow at house 18c in 1864-65; the adjoining 18b house belonged to Daniel McCochrane, not Daniel Glasgow. See the 1864 scan and later scan. Griffith's name index still places a Daniel Glasgow somewhere in Gortereghy in 1862, but his map reference has not been verified. The records therefore do not prove that Daniel and Robert occupied adjoining houses, much less that they were father and son. Probable uncle-nephew remains a qualified family reconstruction.

Identity assessment — a second candidate for the Gortereghy Daniel, 7 October 2026A second Daniel Glasgow lived near Lisnagaver.

A second Daniel Glasgow lived near Lisnagaver. Daniel Glasgow of Culmore, Rasharkin, a married weaver, died there on 14 December 1867 aged 50 (GRONI death register D/1868/31/1005/1/451, Dirraw entry 451, image viewed 23 September 2026; informant Martha Glasgow, probably his wife; index). He is Glasgow-3475. The 17 September 2026 review took him, rather than this Daniel, as the likelier occupier of Griffith's "Daniel Glasgow, Gortereghy"; after the register was read, research/Glasgow-3475/findings.md grades that identity possible, not proved.

Griffith's gives no map reference for the Gortereghy Daniel, and the revision books read so far do not locate his holding. The Gortereghy Daniel is therefore unresolved between this Daniel of Kilrea and the Culmore weaver, and the statement above that he is probably this Daniel is reduced to possible. The Gortereghy entry now gives at most weak support to the proposed Daniel–Alexander collateral relationship.

Source audit

OCR for five consecutive weekly issues of The Jewelers' Circular and Horological Review from 13 December 1911 through 10 January 1912 was searched for David Glasgow, D. Glasgow and Glasgow. The only hits concerned the Scottish city; no death notice or obituary for David appeared. This is a bounded negative for those digitised issues, not evidence that no notice was published elsewhere.
The British Horological Institute identifies David's obituary in The Horological Journal, volume 54 (1911-12), pages 75-76, but its digital archive requires membership. The Google Books and HathiTrust OCLC 49488259 holdings inspected expose later volumes, not volume 54. The cited obituary itself has therefore not been read and must not be treated as evidence for David's ancestry.

Required structured-data correction

Daniel's birth should be changed from about 1807 to about 1795 or 1796, derived from his age 75 at death on 16 October 1871. The registration gives an age, not a birth date, so the result remains approximate.

Recommended correction — Kate, not Peter, present at Daniel's 1871 death, 7 October 2026

A working handover of 13 August 2026 named Peter Glasgow of Kilrea as the person present at Daniel's death on 16 October 1871 and proposed further searches for him. The original death register, cited in the source table above and saved in sources/, names Kate Glasgow of Kilrea; the retained register page was inspected again for Glasgow-951 and also reads Kate. The Peter reading is superseded.

The handover's bounded negative search (no adult Peter Glasgow marriage or death in the Irish civil indexes, 1845–1922, under the standard variants; only an infant Peter Glascow at Limerick in 1896) therefore concerns no one named in Daniel's death record, and there is no Peter of Kilrea to pursue on the strength of it. As before, the record states no relationship between Kate and Daniel.

Current conclusion

Daniel Glasgow was a watchmaker of Church Street, Kilrea, who died there a widower on 16 October 1871, aged 75 according to his civil death registration. His 1871 will names his son David Glasgow (Glasgow-3899) of the City of London and his late brother Thomas, shown by his nephew Daniel Neely Glasgow's 1888 marriage to be Thomas Glasgow (Glasgow-987) of Lisnagaver. An 1827 baptism names his son Robert (Glasgow-3897) by Margaret Irwin, and an 1853 death notice calls James Glasgow (Glasgow-3898) his third son. His parents are not established: Alexander Glasgow (Glasgow-3904) and Rosanna (Unknown-761034) are uncertain working parents drawn from descendant testimony about Thomas.

Identity and relationship assessments — earlier will review

Daniel Glasgow's original 1871 will directly identifies David Glasgow of
the City of London as his son. It also identifies Daniel's late brother
Thomas Glasgow and nephew Daniel Neely Glasgow. The will names no Adam,
Rose, James, or Inishrush relative and does not support Daniel's current
attachment as a child of Adam Glasgow of Inishrush.

Daniel's original death registration now fixes his death at Kilrea on 16 October
1871, aged 75, and records him as a widowed watchmaker. It names Kate Glasgow as
the person present at death, but does not state Kate's relationship.

Daniel belongs in the **Bann Valley-Killoquin / Kilrea-Rasharkin cluster** with
his proved brother Thomas `Glasgow-987` and possible brother or cousin Alexander
`Glasgow-951`.

Follow-up on Thomas's son Daniel Neely has opened a potentially direct parent
route. The younger man's twins were born in September 1889 while their father,
a labourer, resided in New York. An Irish-born cemetery labourer named Daniel
Glascow died at Troy on 12 February 1931 (New York certificate 9941). He is a
strong but unproved candidate for Daniel Neely; his death certificate could
name Thomas and Mary Ann McCracken.

Live-profile audit **19 July 2026**: the structured parents have been changed to
Alexander Glasgow-3904 and Rosanna Unknown-761034, but the biography still has
the obsolete Adam section and the structured birth remains `before 1807`.
`Glasgow-951`. Older Alexander `Glasgow-3904` and Rosanna Unknown are useful
uncertain working parents, not proved parents.

Source audit

- OCR for five consecutive weekly issues of *The Jewelers' Circular and
  Horological Review* from 13 December 1911 through 10 January 1912 was searched
  for `David Glasgow`, `D. Glasgow` and `Glasgow`. The only hits concerned the
  Scottish city; no death notice or obituary for David appeared. This is a
  bounded negative for those digitised issues, not evidence that no notice was
  published elsewhere.
- The British Horological Institute identifies David's obituary in *The
  Horological Journal*, volume 54 (1911-12), pages 75-76, but its digital archive
  requires membership. The Google Books and HathiTrust OCLC 49488259 holdings
  inspected expose later volumes, not volume 54. The cited obituary itself has
  therefore not been read and must not be treated as evidence for David's
  ancestry.

Effect on Adam Glasgow parentage

Daniel belongs to a directly documented Kilrea-Lisnagaver collateral family whose
will-proved sibling is Thomas. No inspected source calls him Adam's son. Daniel
must not be used as a proved child or descendant of Adam when reconstructing
Adam's parents. His inferred birth about 1796 is compatible with Adam's household
chronologically, but compatibility is not relationship evidence.

Adam should not be retained above the older Alexander merely to connect the
cluster to Inishrush. Adam's wife Rose is chronologically excluded as the older
Alexander's mother, and no source identifies Adam as his father.

The will exposed the conflict in the former tree, which made Daniel Thomas's
uncle. The revised working tree places Daniel and Thomas together as brothers and
uses Alexander and Rosanna as uncertain parents. The will does not identify
which parent the brothers shared, so this parentage remains provisional.

Identity cautions

- The will plus Daniel Neely's marriage now strongly identifies late brother
  Thomas as Thomas Glasgow of the Lisnagaver family; retain the two-record proof
  chain rather than citing either record alone.
- Do not infer Thomas and Daniel's parents from their sibling relationship.
- Do not identify Kate Glasgow as Daniel's daughter; the death register only says she
  was present at death.
- The will proves David's father, not his mother. Margaret Irwin remains uncertain
  as David's mother.

Gortereghy placement update

[Griffith's Valuation for Rasharkin](https://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/antrim/rasharkin.htm)
lists Daniel and Robert Glasgow at Gortereghy. Daniel is probably this Kilrea
watchmaker/farmer, but the name-only valuation is not a direct identification. (Revised 7 October 2026: a second candidate, Daniel of Culmore, Glasgow-3475, is now known, and this identity is reduced to possible; see below.)
The Robert was most likely younger Robert `Glasgow-938`, proved son of Alexander
`Glasgow-951`, whose 1866 marriage links Lisnagaver and Gortereghy. If younger
Alexander was Daniel's brother, the two occupiers were uncle and nephew. This
supports the proposed Daniel-Alexander collateral relationship but does not prove it.

PRONI revision books `VAL/12/B/4/17A` and `17B` refine the land clue. They place
Robert Glasgow at house `18c` in 1864-65; the adjoining `18b` house belonged to
Daniel McCochrane, not Daniel Glasgow. See the [1864 scan](sources/proni_VAL-12-B-4-17A_gortereghy_folio21.jpg)
and [later scan](sources/proni_VAL-12-B-4-17B_gortereghy_folio22.jpg). Griffith's
name index still places a Daniel Glasgow somewhere in Gortereghy in 1862, but
his map reference has not been verified. The records therefore do not prove
that Daniel and Robert occupied adjoining houses, much less that they were
father and son. Probable uncle-nephew remains a qualified family reconstruction.

Required structured-data correction

Daniel's birth should be changed from about **1807** to about **1795 or 1796**,
derived from his age 75 at death on 16 October 1871. The registration gives an
age, not a birth date, so the result remains approximate.

Current conclusion — original Prescott conveyances, 13 September 2026

The original [30 July 1861 deed, B465](https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSLG-LWB8-D) now identifies Daniel of Kilrea, watchmaker, and Thomas of Lisnagaver, farmer, with wives Margaret and Mary Anne, as the men selling interests under Robert’s will. Their identity with Daniel-3896 and Thomas-987 is established by the combined places, occupations, wives and earlier brotherhood evidence. The siblings’ parents remain unnamed. Robert, Samuel, John, Daniel and Thomas belong to the same will-defined sibling group, with sister Mary and brother James’s children also named. No contemporary parent names follow, and Alexander-951 is not proved to be another brother.

Eliza Jane and Mary of Rochester are the carpenter’s eldest and second eldest daughters; their ninth shares do not fit a simple division of Robert’s sixth for James’s children. The carpenter’s identity with Robert’s brother remains a property-based hypothesis.

The [original C298 deed, 15 September 1869](https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSLG-LQTY-K), registered 1 July 1870, identifies **Mary Black, formerly Mary Glasgow, as Robert’s sister**, and names children John Black (wife Martha) and Rose Ann Black at Drumoolish, Jane Miller (wife of Robert Miller), Agnes and deceased Elizabeth Black at Newburgh, and Thomasina Montgomery (wife of Mathew) at Legrand, Iowa. This establishes the Black collateral branch; it does not name the siblings’ parents. The original C114 identifies James’s son Alexander as a Rochester express agent, whose identity with Alexander-951 remains unproved.

Source findings — Belfast death notices, 3 October 2026

The [Belfast Evening Telegraph, 21 October 1871, p.3](https://www.newspapers.com/image/1267991526/) and [Belfast News-Letter, 21 October 1871, p.1](https://www.newspapers.com/image/388271252/) both report that **Daniel Glasgow died on 16 October at his residence, Church Street, Kilrea**. The Telegraph gives age 75; the News-Letter gives age 73. The surname passages were inspected in both original scans. These are two appearances of the same notice, not two independent accounts of his age.

Identity assessment — a second candidate for the Gortereghy Daniel, 7 October 2026

A second Daniel Glasgow lived near Lisnagaver. Daniel Glasgow of Culmore, Rasharkin, a married weaver, died there on 14 December 1867 aged 50 (GRONI death register D/1868/31/1005/1/451, Dirraw entry 451, image viewed 23 September 2026; informant Martha Glasgow, probably his wife; [index](https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QP3S-P6DL)). He is [Glasgow-3475](https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Glasgow-3475). The 17 September 2026 review took him, rather than this Daniel, as the likelier occupier of Griffith's "Daniel Glasgow, Gortereghy"; after the register was read, `research/Glasgow-3475/findings.md` grades that identity possible, not proved.

Griffith's gives no map reference for the Gortereghy Daniel, and the revision books read so far do not locate his holding. The Gortereghy Daniel is therefore unresolved between this Daniel of Kilrea and the Culmore weaver, and the statement above that he is probably this Daniel is reduced to possible. The Gortereghy entry now gives at most weak support to the proposed Daniel–Alexander collateral relationship.

- **1846:** [Slater's National Commercial Directory of Ireland](https://www.failteromhat.com/slater/0192.pdf), Kilrea, p. 473, lists "Glasco Daniel" under Watch & Clock Makers.
- **1858–59:** [Griffith's Valuation for Kilrea](https://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/derry/kilrea.php) lists Daniel Glasgow in **Church Street** and a Daniel Glasgow with a holding at **Claragh**.
- **1831:** the [County Londonderry census place index](https://www.billmacafee.com/1831census/1831derrycensusplace.pdf) lists a household of "Danl. Glasgow" (the compiler queries "Glosger") in Kilrea town.

All three were seen as online copies or transcriptions. The directory and the Church Street entry fit this Daniel, the Kilrea watchmaker who died in Church Street on 16 October 1871; the 1831 entry probably does too. The Claragh holding may be his or another Daniel's; its tenement details have not been compared.

Recommended correction — Kate, not Peter, present at Daniel's 1871 death, 7 October 2026

A working handover of 13 August 2026 named **Peter Glasgow of Kilrea** as the person present at Daniel's death on 16 October 1871 and proposed further searches for him. The [original death register](https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/view/?record_id=cide-7256058), cited in the source table above and saved in `sources/`, names **Kate Glasgow** of Kilrea; the retained register page was inspected again for Glasgow-951 and also reads Kate. The Peter reading is superseded.

The handover's bounded negative search (no adult Peter Glasgow marriage or death in the Irish civil indexes, 1845–1922, under the standard variants; only an infant Peter Glascow at Limerick in 1896) therefore concerns no one named in Daniel's death record, and there is no Peter of Kilrea to pursue on the strength of it. As before, the record states no relationship between Kate and Daniel.
