Mary (McCracken) Glasgow

Biography
Mary McCracken was born about 1777, calculated from her gravestone age. Her parents and exact birthplace have not been proved.

Mary married Wilson Crossier Glasgow. Their reciprocal gravestone inscriptions identify Wilson as Mary's husband and Mary as Wilson's wife. Wilson died on 11 September 1817. 

Mary headed a household in Newberry County in 1820. "United States Census, 1820," FamilySearch (record (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XHG6-MT8)), Mary Glassgow Junior, Newberry, South Carolina. She was again enumerated as a household head there in 1830. Mary made her will on 28 November 1837. She gave her daughter Ruth one-seventh of her property. Daughter Mariah, wife of William McCracken, received one-sixth of the remaining estate for life, with the share then to pass to her brothers and sisters. Mary's son Hiram was appointed Mariah's trustee. The displayed recording date of July 1837 precedes execution and is evidently a transcription error. 

Mary died on 23 March 1838, aged about 61, and was buried at Gilders Creek Cemetery. , memorial for Mary McCracken Glasgow. Her will was proved on 22 October 1838, and William Glasgow administered her estate in 1839. Mary's will creates seven child-shares: Ruth, Mariah and five other children. The index to Wilson's real-estate packet lists Mary with Robert, Ruth, Naomi, Matilda, Hiram, Almina and Maria. The widow plus these seven apparent children matches the will count, although the original packet is still needed for explicit kin terms for every person. James J Glasgow is not among the seven names and was not attached as Mary's son. A FamilySearch child list also assigns Mary and Wilson a Fleming Bates Glasgow born in 1823, but Wilson had died in 1817. The online list therefore combines more than one family.
