Catalogue-wide reassessment, 13 September: Robert-2769 is proposed only as James J's father. His South Carolina birth, compatible son-age slot in 1820 and later Tennessee residence give that hypothesis a coherent chronology. Archibald-2304's unidentified 1800 boy fits Robert's early-1790s age range, while Archibald's descent from James-1144 is independently supported by a will and equity case. This makes a substantive two-generation research model; Alexander of Lisnagaver would connect through an earlier Irish collateral branch, not through Robert as his father. The earlier combined-father objection is withdrawn. Full sourced reconstruction.

Summary of the research

Overall conclusion

Robert is not the only chronologically suitable father for James J. James-2439, born about 1787, and Sarah form another Newberry comparison household. Inspect its 1831 estate 1643 alongside Archibald's adult-heir receipts in estate 647. These are specific alternatives, not evidence that the anonymous census boys have already been identified.

Master reassessment, 5 September 2026

James J's parents remain unidentified. Robert Glasgow-2769 is one compatible Giles County father hypothesis, not an established or uniquely leading father. Archibald Glasgow-2304's 1800 household supplies a narrower two-generation test—an unidentified boy born in the 1790s could have fathered James J about 1809/10—but the census names neither the boy nor James. The adult estate distributions and receipts in Archibald's estate 647 are the decisive target. The boy cannot be Archibald's monument-named son James, who died in 1824 aged eighteen and was therefore born about 1806. If the unidentified 1800 boy was James J's father, a feasible birth window is about 1790–1794; that range is a chronology test, not a probability estimate.

The Robert–John trail in Giles County and James J's separate district 6 land trail remain unjoined. Y-DNA strongly supports shared paternal ancestry between James J's and Alexander Glasgow-951's lines, but cannot identify either man's father. If Robert remains attached to James J, the relationship must remain uncertain.

The FamilySearch attachment to Wilson Crossier Glasgow and Mary McCracken is contradicted by Wilson's estate records. Mary's 1837 will divides her property among seven children. The matching real-estate index names Mary with Robert, Ruth, Naomi, Matilda, Hiram, Almina and Maria in Wilson's estate; James is not listed. The original packet is still needed for its exact kinship wording, but the matching count makes James's omission material. The FamilySearch child list is demonstrably conflated because it also calls Fleming Bates Glasgow, born in 1823, a son of Wilson, who died in 1817.

James remains a plausible but unproved son of Robert Glasgow. Robert's 1820 Giles County household had one boy aged 10–15, compatible with a James born about 1809/10, and James was later established in Giles County. No record yet names Robert as his father. The tested Y-DNA line reaches James and places his paternal line under R-FT20271, but it cannot identify his father without a documented comparison line.

A new paper-tree hypothesis can now be stated without treating it as proved. One testable two-generation candidate runs through Archibald Glasgow-2304, whose 1800 Newberry household contained one otherwise-unidentified boy under ten. If that boy was James's father, the line would run through Archibald to James Glasgow-1144 and the older Kilwaughter family. That would give a coherent place for the close Y-DNA relationship to Alexander Glasgow-951's Antrim line, but no record yet identifies the boy or proves James-to-Robert or Robert-to-Archibald.

Identity and family

Relationship assessment — the Kilwaughter chain and Y-DNA, 6 October 2026

The paper chain is graded as before. Robert Glasgow-1143 had a son James (proved by the 1764 lease, "Jas Glasgow son of the sd Robt"), and that son is James Glasgow-1144 of South Carolina on probable to strong evidence (the 1817 pleadings and sworn answer, known from derivative transcriptions). James-1144 → Archibald Glasgow-2304 is probable. Archibald → Robert Glasgow-2769 is possible, on an age fit to the under-ten boy of 1800 only, and Robert-2769 → James J is possible. James J's tie to the documented Kilwaughter family is therefore at most possible.

Y-DNA does not yet test that chain. James J's line is in R-FT20271 with the line of Alexander Glasgow-951, but neither Kilwaughter kit (reported Robert c.1710; reported James 1731-1775) has an SNP result, so nothing places the documented Kilwaughter family inside FT20271. The same branch also holds the reported William c.1655 and Robert-12 (Moneymore) lines.

The testing recommendation of 6 October 2026 bears on James J in three ways:

First, at no cost, obtain the direct FT6135 call, with coverage, for James J's kit, and ask whether either Kilwaughter kit descends through Archibald. One that does is a test of this hypothesis, not an independent line.
If a Kilwaughter kit proves to be FT25406-positive and FT20271-negative, the documented Kilwaughter family is outside FT20271 and James J's proposed descent through James-1144 and Archibald is contradicted, assuming the testers' reported pedigrees are correct.
A new SNP or private variant shared only between a Kilwaughter kit and James J's kit would support his Kilwaughter descent. It would not prove Robert-2769 or Archibald as his father or grandfather; Archibald's estate 647 is the record test.

The census names only Robert, however, and neither Giles County deed names a parent or sibling. The relationship therefore remains uncertain.

FamilySearch has also placed James among the children of [[Glasgow-1982|Wilson Crossier Glasgow]] and [[McCracken-3711|Mary McCracken]]. The available estate evidence contradicts that placement. The same FamilySearch family also includes Fleming Bates Glasgow, reportedly born in 1823. The Wilson and Mary hypothesis was therefore rejected. Robert remains the leading working father, but a probate, deed, Bible, obituary or other record naming the relationship is still needed.

The proposed path through [[Glasgow-2304|Archibald Glasgow]] is a further missing-son hypothesis and should not be stated as established ancestry. The 9 November 1848 deed proves James's residence on the ridge then. Its recital of Noah Hancock's 7 October 1845 title bond proves the earlier transaction, not James's residence in 1845. **Catalogue-wide reassessment, 13 September:** Robert-2769 is proposed only as
James J's father. His South Carolina birth, compatible son-age slot in 1820
and later Tennessee residence give that hypothesis a coherent chronology.
Archibald-2304's unidentified 1800 boy fits Robert's early-1790s age range,
while Archibald's descent from James-1144 is independently supported by a will
and equity case. This makes a substantive two-generation research model;
Alexander of Lisnagaver would connect through an earlier Irish collateral
branch, not through Robert as his father. The earlier combined-father

Robert is not the only chronologically suitable father for James J.
[James-2439](/people/glasgow-2439.html), born about 1787, and Sarah form another
Newberry comparison household. Inspect its 1831 estate 1643 alongside
Archibald's adult-heir receipts in estate 647. These are specific alternatives,
not evidence that the anonymous census boys have already been identified.

### Master reassessment, 5 September 2026

James J's parents remain unidentified. Robert `Glasgow-2769` is one compatible
Giles County father hypothesis, not an established or uniquely leading father.
Archibald `Glasgow-2304`'s 1800 household supplies a narrower two-generation
test—an unidentified boy born in the 1790s could have fathered James J about
1809/10—but the census names neither the boy nor James. The adult estate
distributions and receipts in Archibald's estate 647 are the decisive target.
The boy cannot be Archibald's monument-named son James, who died in 1824 aged
eighteen and was therefore born about 1806. If the unidentified 1800 boy was
James J's father, a feasible birth window is about 1790–1794; that range is a
chronology test, not a probability estimate.

The Robert–John trail in Giles County and James J's separate district 6 land
trail remain unjoined. Y-DNA strongly supports shared paternal ancestry between
James J's and Alexander `Glasgow-951`'s lines, but cannot identify either man's
father. If Robert remains attached to James J, the relationship must remain
uncertain.

The FamilySearch attachment to Wilson Crossier Glasgow and Mary McCracken is
contradicted by Wilson's estate records. Mary's 1837 will divides her property
among seven children. The matching real-estate index names Mary with Robert,
Ruth, Naomi, Matilda, Hiram, Almina and Maria in Wilson's estate; James is not
listed. The original packet is still needed for its exact kinship wording, but
the matching count makes James's omission material. The FamilySearch child list
is demonstrably conflated because it also calls Fleming Bates Glasgow, born in
1823, a son of Wilson, who died in 1817.

James remains a plausible but unproved son of [[Glasgow-2769|Robert Glasgow]].
Robert's 1820 Giles County household had one boy aged 10–15, compatible with a
James born about 1809/10, and James was later established in Giles County. No
record yet names Robert as his father. The tested Y-DNA line reaches James and
places his paternal line under R-FT20271, but it cannot identify his father
without a documented comparison line.

A new paper-tree hypothesis can now be stated without treating it as proved.
One testable two-generation candidate runs through Archibald `Glasgow-2304`,
whose 1800 Newberry household contained one otherwise-unidentified boy under
ten. If that boy was James's father, the line would run through Archibald to James
`Glasgow-1144` and the older Kilwaughter family. That would give a coherent place
for the close Y-DNA relationship to Alexander `Glasgow-951`'s Antrim line, but no
record yet identifies the boy or proves James-to-Robert or Robert-to-Archibald.

The testing recommendation of 6 October 2026 bears on James J in three ways:

- First, at no cost, obtain the direct FT6135 call, with coverage, for James J's kit, and ask whether either Kilwaughter kit descends through Archibald. One that does is a test of this hypothesis, not an independent line.
- If a Kilwaughter kit proves to be FT25406-positive and FT20271-negative, the documented Kilwaughter family is outside FT20271 and James J's proposed descent through James-1144 and Archibald is contradicted, assuming the testers' reported pedigrees are correct.
- A new SNP or private variant shared only between a Kilwaughter kit and James J's kit would support his Kilwaughter descent. It would not prove Robert-2769 or Archibald as his father or grandfather; Archibald's estate 647 is the record test.
