About Robert

Robert was probably born about 1790 or 1791, not about 1780. The intersection of the 1820 age 26–44 bracket and the 1840 age 40–49 bracket favours a birth between about 1790 and 1794. The 1850 return gives his age as 60, but that may have been an estimate or a rounding of 59 rather than an exact age. Robert Glasgow (Glasgow-1983) was detached as his father because the Gilders Creek gravestone proves that Glasgow-1983 and Elizabeth already had a different son Robert, Glasgow-3982, who died in 1813.

Summary of the research

Overall conclusion

The reported wife Nancy has not been identified by a contemporary record. The 19 January 1814 Delaware marriage of Robert Glasgow and Nancy Black belongs to a different couple who remained in Delaware and raised children there. Nancy Black must not be used as this Robert's wife.

Priscilla is Robert's strongest child identification. A female aged 15–19 in Robert's 1840 household fits her estimated birth, and the 1850 census names Priscilla Glascoe, 28, born Tennessee, in Robert Glaseoe's household. The 1850 census did not state relationships, so daughter remains a strong inference rather than literal census wording. Emma and Jessie fit the other adult-child slots in 1840 but are not named there. James J remains chronologically possible. John, reportedly born about 1800, would have been born when Robert was at most about ten years old; he remains attached only as an uncertain son (corrected on 7 October 2026; see below).

Archibald Glasgow (Glasgow-2304) is now the leading named father candidate, but is not proved. Archibald's 1800 Newberry household contained exactly one male under ten, a slot not occupied by his three gravestone-proved children. Robert's best estimate of about 1790 can fit that category. Combining that boy with Robert's 1820 and 1840 brackets gives 5 August 1790–7 August 1794, conditional on accurate ages and identity. A woman near the older end of the 1800 female age band could have been about sixteen to twenty at an early-1790s birth; her name and maternity are not supplied by the schedule. Preserve the existing uncertain father hypothesis while seeking named heirs in Archibald's 1818 estate 647.

Robert is proposed as James J's father only, not as father of Alexander of Lisnagaver, Thomas or Daniel. Their ages do not object to this hypothesis. Robert's South Carolina birth, a compatible older boy in his 1820 household, and the later Giles County family make a coherent South Carolina-to-Tennessee reconstruction. If James J was his South Carolina-born son about 1809/10, Robert's 1814 Tennessee service fits a move after that birth. Archibald's documented descent from the Kilwaughter emigrant family makes this a concrete route to test against the DNA connection, rather than proof obtained from it. See the family reconstruction.

Candidate father assessment

Archibald Glasgow-2304 ranks above the other named Newberry candidates because the 1800 census supplies an actual unidentified boy of the correct broad age. The hypothesis also makes geographic sense: Archibald belonged to the emigrant family of James Glasgow-1144, while Robert was born in South Carolina and had moved into Tennessee by the War of 1812. It remains only a moderate working hypothesis. No record calls Robert Archibald's son, the 1810 age columns are still unread, and the 1800 adult-female age is awkward.

Relationship assessment — status of the link to John (Glasgow-2770), 19 August 2026

This file's recommendation that John be detached as Robert's son was not carried out. On 19 August 2026 the live profile's stale detachment wording was corrected and Robert and Nancy were kept as John's parents with both links marked uncertain, because no better parents are known; the register records this as verified live that day. The chronological objection stands: John's reported birth about 1800 falls when Robert, born about 1790–1794, was at most about ten. No record names them as father and son. Whether to detach John remains a decision for the owner.

A Robert Glasgow headed a household in Newberry District in the 1800 census (FamilySearch XHRC-7BF; index). This Robert, with a census-derived birth about 1790–1794, was too young to be that household head, so the entry documents a different local Robert, very probably Robert Glasgow (Glasgow-1983), whose findings use the same 1800 household (inference from name, district and year). Excluded for this profile. FamilySearch tree person LHBL-QFT represents a different Newberry Robert; it is a derivative lead only, not evidence of identity.
