How parent leads are calculated

Automated leads use birth surnames—not married surnames—as parental eligibility, role-specific biological age limits, bounded and approximate-date uncertainty, household chronology, specific time-aware localities, mapped distance, tenancy succession, migration destinations and sex-aware Scottish naming positions across generations. People already attached as the subject's parents stay in the identity summary and are excluded from this alternative-candidate list, regardless of relationship confidence. The main calibration uses clues available on disconnected profiles; existing parent and sibling links are retained as comparison context rather than treated as transferable evidence. Common ordered names and grandparent-to-child echoes receive a small non-zero weight, so a John or James match can support several independent criteria without producing a lead alone. Rare names, repeated bearers and bundles across otherwise distinct branches receive substantially more weight according to catalogue frequency. An exact migration place is weighted by its rarity and repetition across both branches; a shared destination country is worth only one point. Extra weight is added only when at least three independent clue types converge: naming, locality, specific migration, household chronology or collateral networks. Sparse profiles retain a clearly labelled chronology-only fallback instead of disappearing. Countries, states, counties and research clusters do not count as a shared locality, and fallback, broad representative or kin-inferred coordinates are excluded from distance scoring. Shared descendant profiles are removed before branch-name comparison. A candidate already recorded as a parent-in-law is excluded. A confident or independently supported parent is treated as settled; uncertain and unassessed attachments remain open to alternative comparison. A different linked parent, an uncle/aunt or grandparent path, and a matching existing child profile prevent an alternative from being classified as a strong direct-parent lead until the underlying tree conflict or duplicate is resolved. Familiar forms such as Bessie are normalised. Surname remains an eligibility filter worth zero points.

Naming customs, shared farms and occupations are circumstantial. Children, spouses and collateral relatives may be missing, and tree-derived family networks are not independent evidence. Scores rank research leads; they do not prove parentage.

How duplicate leads are calculated

Dates are eligibility gates, not merely deductions: chronologically impossible people are excluded. Dates, places, spouses, parent certainty and children's profiles and names are then compared. A high score is a prompt to inspect records, not a merge recommendation.

Current conclusion

Glasgow-1983

Robert's parentage is unusually well supported. James Glasgow's will calls him a son, and Robert's 1817 sworn answer calls James his father, Mary his mother, Rachel Wilson his paternal grandmother, Ann Glasgow his father's sister, and Robert himself James's oldest son.

Elizabeth was Robert's wife. Their shared Gilders Creek stone directly identifies their son Robert, born about 1808 and dead in 1813. That child is Glasgow-3982, not the Tennessee Robert Glasgow-2769.

Robert and Elizabeth had a larger family than WikiTree currently shows. The 1800 census records one boy aged 10–15, two girls aged 10–15 and one girl under 10 in their household. The boy fits James (about 1787–1831). Mary Caroline Glasgow (1785–1841), wife of Zaccheus Wright, is a strong daughter candidate: she fits one of the two older girls, a Wright family account calls her the daughter of Robert and Elizabeth Kinard, and Zaccheus administered Robert's estate in 1835. The other two daughters remain unidentified.

No further son is presently indicated. In 1800 the only boy in Robert's household was the age-compatible James; Robert (1808–1813) was born later. The 1835 estate packet is the decisive uninspected source for a complete heir list.

Robert's own profile gives Ireland only. His attached father James-1144 is placed at Kilwaughter and his attached brother John-1146 states County Antrim, so the county placement is contextual rather than proved.

James's will calls Robert his son. Robert's 1817 sworn answer calls James his father and says he was James's oldest son.

Robert Glasgow was son of Mary (Crosier) Glasgow

strongly_supported1 linked evidence item

Robert's 1817 sworn answer identifies Mary as his mother; Mary's 1819 declaration calls Robert her son.

Robert Glasgow was husband of Elizabeth (Kinard) Glasgow

strongly_supported1 linked evidence item

Gilders Creek Cemetery calls Elizabeth wife of Robert and says she shares the stone with their son Robert.

Robert Glasgow was son of Robert Glasgow

proved1 linked evidence item

The photographed stone calls Elizabeth the spouse of Robert Glasgow and the child “their son.” This directly supported child displaces the contradictory Glasgow-2769 attachment.

Glasgow-1983 and Elizabeth were parents of Glasgow-3982, born about 1808 and died 1813.

proved1 linked evidence item

Elizabeth's shared Gilders Creek stone calls her Robert's spouse and the child their son Robert.

Working hypotheses and conflicts

Robert Glasgow was son of Robert Glasgow

contradicted1 linked evidence item

Glasgow-1983's gravestone-proved son Glasgow-3982 was born while Glasgow-2769 was alive. No direct record supports the older edge, and Y-DNA proves only deeper paternal ancestry.

Record-bearing passages

  • Biography Robert Glasgow was born about 1762 or 1763 in Ireland. His Gilders Creek gravestone records that he died on 17 January 1835 aged 72 years and three months. "Gilders Creek Cemetery" (https://genealogytrails.com/scar/newberry/gilders_creek_cem.htm), Newberry County, South Carolina, transcriptions for Robert, Elizabeth and their son Robert (accessed 12 August 2026).
  • Robert was the oldest son of James Glasgow and Mary Crosier. James's will gave Robert 100 acres including the house in which James lived. "Will of James Glasgow" (https://web.archive.org/web/20101124215937id_/http://lifesweaving.com/Glasgow/Paper_JGlasgowWill.html), transcription of Newberry Will Book A, p. 194; will dated 17 October 1775 and proved 13 July 1793 (accessed 12 August 2026).
  • In a sworn answer dated 2 June 1817, Robert called James his father, Mary his mother, Rachel Wilson his paternal grandmother and Ann Glasgow his father's sister. He also described himself as James's oldest son. "Reply of Robert Glasgow" (https://web.archive.org/web/20101124184247id_/http://www.lifesweaving.com/Glasgow/Paper_Reply.html), transcription of Robert Glasgow's sworn answer, 2 June 1817 (accessed 12 August 2026). His amended answer explained that Rachel was one of six sisters of Archibald Wilson. "Amended answer of Robert Glasgow" (https://web.archive.org/web/20101104165918id_/http://lifesweaving.com/Glasgow/Paper_Answer.html), transcription dated 18 June 1818 (accessed 12 August 2026).
  • Robert married Elizabeth Kinard. Their shared gravestone calls Elizabeth Robert's wife and records “their son” Robert, who died on 12 December 1813 aged five.
  • In 1800 Robert headed a Newberry household containing one boy aged 10–15, two girls aged 10–15, one girl under ten, an adult woman aged 26–44 and a woman aged 45 or older. "1800 Newberry District census" (https://genealogytrails.com/scar/newberry/1800nbycensusG.htm), Robert Glasgow household (accessed 12 August 2026); citing NARA microfilm publication M32, roll 50.
  • The same return is indexed by FamilySearch. "United States Census, 1800," database with images, FamilySearch (record XHRC-7BF (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XHRC-7BF)), Robert Glasgow, Newberry District, South Carolina; citing p. 75, NARA M32, roll 50 (accessed 12 August 2026).
  • Elizabeth died on 10 November 1823 aged 60. Robert died on 17 January 1835. Zaccheus Wright administered Robert's estate. "Probate court general index to estates, 1785–1949" (https://genealogytrails.com/scar/newberry/estates1785-1949/22.htm), Robert Glasgow, estate 1055, box 43, package 98 (accessed 12 August 2026). Research Notes Children The 1800 household shows that Robert and Elizabeth's family was larger than the presently documented son Robert.
  • James Glasgow, born about 1787, is a probable son. His age fits the only boy aged 10–15 in Robert's 1800 household, but the census does not name him and no direct relationship record has yet been inspected.
  • Mary Caroline Glasgow, born 17 September 1785 and wife of Zaccheus Wright, is a probable daughter. She fits one of the two girls aged 10–15 in 1800. A Wright family account identifies her as a daughter of Robert Glasgow and Elizabeth Kinard, and her husband administered Robert's estate. "Family: Wright" (https://www.geocities.ws/richmond01_2000/wright.html), account of Zaccheus Wright and Mary Glasgow (accessed 12 August 2026). The relationship should remain uncertain until Robert's estate packet or another direct record names her.
  • The census requires two further girls in Robert's household: another aged 10–15 and one under ten. They may have been daughters, but their identities have not been established.
  • Robert Glasgow, born about 1808 and died in 1813, is directly proved as a son by the shared gravestone. Robert Glasgow of Tennessee was previously attached as another son, but he was already alive while the gravestone-proved child lived and no direct record supports that former attachment.
  • No other son has been identified. Robert's estate packet, estate 1055, box 43, package 98, is the most likely source for a complete list of heirs.
  • An older compiled family page stated that Robert was born in Ireland. Glasgow family page (http://web.bledsoe.net/~danshell/fam00485.htm), formerly cited on this profile; link retained although the page is no longer consistently available. This agrees with the profile's broad birthplace but is not a contemporary birth record. Sources *
