About Archibald

James Glasgow's will and the 1817 equity case strongly support Archibald as a son of James and Mary. Gilders Creek gravestones name three children of Archibald and Mary: James Glasgow-3981 (1806-1824), Neomi Glasgow-3979 (1797-1831), and Rachel Glasgow-3980 (1801-1855), wife of Isaac Keller. Their parentage is direct gravestone evidence rather than merely inherited tree structure.

Summary of the research

Overall conclusion

The 1818 estate index names Mary Glasgow as administrator of Archibald's estate, which strongly corroborates the household but does not itself print “wife.” Sarah Glasgow-3042's current father link is tree-only; her stone names her spouse, not her parents.

Robert Glasgow-2769, later of Tennessee, is now the leading named candidate for an additional son. Archibald's 1800 Newberry household contained exactly one male under ten. None of the three gravestone-proved children fills that slot: Neomi was female, Rachel was born in 1801 and James in 1806. Robert's combined census evidence places his birth about 1790, within the 1800 category if he was born after the census date or if his later reported age was approximate. This is a genuine household fit, not proof of parentage.

The age bands require a more balanced reading. Combining the 1800 boy with Robert's 1820 and 1840 brackets permits 5 August 1790–7 August 1794, if the identity and ages are correct. The adult woman aged 16–25 in 1800 could have been about sixteen to twenty at an early-1790s birth if near the older end of her range. Her identity and maternity are not stated. This is a condition to check, not a general chronological objection to the household. Robert's 1850 age of sixty requires a modest discrepancy with the earlier brackets.

The actual American reconstruction has a coherent migration sequence: James's family is associated with Kilwaughter in 1772 and his will places him in South Carolina in 1775; Robert later reported a South Carolina birth and served in Tennessee in 1814. Robert is proposed only as James J's father, not the father of the Irish Alexander, Thomas or Daniel. Their ages do not count against this chain. Findmypast's captured Irish record sets hold no Archibald Glasgow in County Antrim before 1840. Nothing found bears on his missing adult son or on Robert of Tennessee.

Parentage inference correction — 13 September 2026

The common-father comparison is withdrawn: it tested a scenario that was not proposed. The actual Robert-to-James-J hypothesis is compatible with an earlier Irish collateral connection and has positive census, birthplace and migration support. Neither a fixed joining generation nor the two uncertain American parent links has been proved. See the current reconstruction. No structured relationship has been changed.

James Glasgow-3981 is a proved son, but he was born in 1806 and therefore cannot be the male under ten in Archibald's 1800 household. Neomi and possibly Sarah can account for two of the four girls; Rachel and James were not yet born. The census therefore indicates that the currently identified child group is incomplete even without accepting Robert as the missing boy.

Priority: inspect the adult distributions, receipts and releases in estate 647. Guardianship 646 is a separate proceeding and must not be assumed to list Archibald's children. The original 1810 census image should also be read for a male aged 10–15 or 16–25. Archibald's estate packet is the best chance of naming Robert directly or excluding him from a complete heir group.

Keep birth about 1769, with its basis stated: aged 49 at death on 22 July 1818, on the Gilder's Creek stone as transcribed (born July 1768 to July 1769; read through a summarising fetch, to be confirmed on the page). Birthplace: the present South Carolina birthplace conflicts with a birth in 1768/9, before his father's reported emigration in late 1772 or 1773. No record gives his birthplace; mark it as unsupported and do not blank it without an evidenced replacement.

Unresolved — Mary's maiden surname, 7 October 2026

The Gilders Creek inscriptions name Archibald's wife only as Mary. Find a Grave memorial 33531779 calls her Mary Spence Glasgow, but "Spence" is not visible in the photographed Glasgow inscriptions and no marriage or probate record has confirmed it. Derivative memorial; unresolved lead only. Estate 647 (Mary as administrator) may give her full name. Related memorials: Archibald 33531767, Neomi 33531784, Sarah 33531790.
