About Arthur

Arthur Glasgow (Glasgow-649), born about 1750, later Rockbridge County, Virginia is now proved to be a brother of Joseph Glasgow (Glasgow-1543) and Robert Glasgow (Glasgow-12). His claimed Moneymore birth and attached parents are still not established.

Summary of the research

Overall conclusion

David Faris prints a family letter dated 6 November 1806 from Joseph and Betty Glasgow to Arthur. Joseph addresses Arthur as his brother and refers to “brother robert.” Joseph's 1831 will independently calls a younger Robert the son of his deceased brother Arthur and Joseph's nephew. The combined evidence makes the three-way sibling relationship strong; it does not identify their parents.

The repeated name Arthur in John Glasgow's descendants is real but heavily confounded by John's wife, Mary Arthur. Their son Arthur can naturally have been named from his mother's surname; later Arthur Glasgow compound names can honour that son or the maternal surname without referring to Arthur-649.

A useful working hypothesis remains: Arthur-649 could have had an older or half-brother Adam who remained in Ireland and became the older Adam implied by John-822's naming pattern. Faris calls emigrant Robert a son of James of Moneymore, while later accounts make Robert, Joseph and Arthur brothers. The resulting Adam-James-John-Arthur sequence could preserve John's father Adam, grandfather James, John himself and his paternal uncle Arthur. No inspected source names Adam in that emigrant family, however.

This hypothesis concerns the record-defined James of Moneymore, whose own dates and spouse are not supplied by the WorldCat summary. It must not be used to validate the internally conflicted live profile Glasgow-1024 or the wholly derivative James-3305.

This is chronologically possible and would let John's first son Adam honour his paternal grandfather, James preserve the preceding paternal generation, and Arthur honour a paternal uncle. The sequence is not a strict application of the usual naming convention because a second son ordinarily represented the maternal grandfather. The model is not yet preferable to the second-1740-Hugh model because no source names Adam as Arthur's brother, Faris's evidence remains uninspected, Ellen Glasgow's account instead places the family's Irish stage in Down and Antrim, and Mary Arthur independently explains the name Arthur.

Current conclusion

[Arthur Glasgow (Glasgow-649), born about 1750, later Rockbridge County,

His claimed Moneymore birth and attached parents are still not established.
