About Robert

Robert's parents and grandparents are still unproved, but his relationship to Arthur Glasgow (Glasgow-649) and Joseph Glasgow (Glasgow-1543) is now strong enough to mark the three men as certain brothers in profile prose. WikiTree cannot encode a sibling edge independently, so this does not make their present shared parents certain.

Summary of the research

Overall conclusion

David Faris transcribed a family letter dated 6 November 1806 from Joseph and Betty Glasgow in Wythe County to Arthur Glasgow in Rockbridge County. Joseph addressed Arthur as his brother and referred to “brother robert.” The wording is contemporary relationship evidence, although the original letter still needs to be located and inspected.

Joseph's 1831 will independently calls the younger Robert Glasgow his nephew and the son of Joseph's deceased brother Arthur. That directly proves Joseph and Arthur were brothers. Together, the letter and will establish the Robert–Arthur–Joseph sibling cluster.

The evidence does not identify the brothers' father with James Glasgow (Glasgow-1024) or their mother with Mary Harkness (Harkness-1149). Faris calls Robert a son of “James Glasgow of Moneymore,” but the live James profile has conflicting dates and migration/death narratives and may combine more than one man.

Source findings — Y-STR family signature, 12 August 2026

An all-against-all comparison of the 111-marker Y-STR results of the seven Big Y tests at R-FT20271 or its child R-FTE32242 (FamilyTreeDNA Glasgow Project public Y-STR table, with rows supplied by the project administrator) found that all four tests descending from three of Robert's sons share DYS19=15, DYS456=16 and DYS712=19. The three other basal FT20271 lines carry 14, 17 and 20 at those markers. The reconstructed Y-111 haplotype for Robert's family is matched exactly by the probable John M. line and by one James M. line; the William line departs from it at one marker (DYS650) and the other James M. line at one (CDY). Seen as a derivative analysis of project-table values.

The motif agrees with the documented descent through three sons, but it is an STR signature, not a named SNP branch. DYS712 mutates rapidly and any STR can recur or revert, so the signature cannot override SNP results: the probable John M. line and a James M. line are identical across the Y-111 panel, yet only the James M. test carries FTE32242.

John and Mary are reported as additional emigrant siblings in Faris's reconstruction, but no equally explicit original-record wording has yet been found for them.

Y-DNA branch assessment

Four Big Y descendant tests cover three sons of Robert. FT20271 is derived in all tested son-lines, so Robert is an inferred carrier. Two independent tests through James M. Glasgow-193 carry FTE32242 while the William and probable John M. lines remain basal FT20271; this places FTE32242 on the Robert-to-James edge.

Current conclusion
