Unresolved — Montfoid testament comparison, 10 September 2026
Grant's Commissariot Record of Glasgow (printed p. 426; cross-reference p. 196) calendars the testament of Bessie Robertson, spouse of John Glasgow in Montfoid, confirmed 17 August 1610. James Paterson's History of the Counties of Ayr and Wigtown, Cuninghame, pp. 53–54, quotes an unnamed Montfoid tenant's testament with the same confirmation date: Jean Boyd, Lady Montfoid, is creditor for 'ane boll of ferme meill', and the tenant died in February 1606. Paterson names neither Bessie nor John; his account is a later printed quotation, not an inspected original.
The shared estate and date make this a useful target, not proof. Obtain the original testament (CC9/7; volume and image not yet identified) and compare the confirmation date, Montfoid tenancy, the Lady Montfoid creditor, the ferme-meal debt and the death wording. Until then do not enter February 1606 as Bessie's death or treat the tenant as her husband. If a 1606 death is proved, reconsider children attributed to her from later baptisms only after distinguishing birth from baptism dates; it would not exclude John Glasgow (Glasgow-3296) from later fatherhood. The 1650 Quothquan testament's Bessie Glasgow is John's sister, not this Bessie.
