How parent leads are calculated

Automated leads use birth surnames—not married surnames—as parental eligibility, role-specific biological age limits, bounded and approximate-date uncertainty, household chronology, specific time-aware localities, mapped distance, tenancy succession, migration destinations and sex-aware Scottish naming positions across generations. People already attached as the subject's parents stay in the identity summary and are excluded from this alternative-candidate list, regardless of relationship confidence. The main calibration uses clues available on disconnected profiles; existing parent and sibling links are retained as comparison context rather than treated as transferable evidence. Common ordered names and grandparent-to-child echoes receive a small non-zero weight, so a John or James match can support several independent criteria without producing a lead alone. Rare names, repeated bearers and bundles across otherwise distinct branches receive substantially more weight according to catalogue frequency. An exact migration place is weighted by its rarity and repetition across both branches; a shared destination country is worth only one point. Extra weight is added only when at least three independent clue types converge: naming, locality, specific migration, household chronology or collateral networks. Sparse profiles retain a clearly labelled chronology-only fallback instead of disappearing. Countries, states, counties and research clusters do not count as a shared locality, and fallback, broad representative or kin-inferred coordinates are excluded from distance scoring. Shared descendant profiles are removed before branch-name comparison. A candidate already recorded as a parent-in-law is excluded. A confident or independently supported parent is treated as settled; uncertain and unassessed attachments remain open to alternative comparison. A different linked parent, an uncle/aunt or grandparent path, and a matching existing child profile prevent an alternative from being classified as a strong direct-parent lead until the underlying tree conflict or duplicate is resolved. Familiar forms such as Bessie are normalised. Surname remains an eligibility filter worth zero points.

Naming customs, shared farms and occupations are circumstantial. Children, spouses and collateral relatives may be missing, and tree-derived family networks are not independent evidence. Scores rank research leads; they do not prove parentage.

How duplicate leads are calculated

Dates are eligibility gates, not merely deductions: chronologically impossible people are excluded. Dates, places, spouses, parent certainty and children's profiles and names are then compared. A high score is a prompt to inspect records, not a merge recommendation.

Current conclusion

Glasgow-1561

Father assessment: Andrew Glasgow (1540) is contradicted by Andrew's 1598 testament. Andrew expressly names Marioune, James, Andrew and William as his four children. John was alive and parenting children in 1613-1622 but is absent from that list.

John still fits the Lothian family geographically. He may instead be one generation lower, through one of Andrew elder's record-proved sons James, Andrew or William. He is also the strongest duplicate candidate for the otherwise unsourced Mid Calder profile Glasgow-3608.

John was alive and parenting children in Linlithgow from 1613 to 1622, so this omission conflicts with treating him as Andrew's proved direct son.
 • The existing links to Andrew and Jonet Anderson are retained as uncertain working parents, not as proved relationships. The Lothian geography could instead place John one generation lower or on a collateral line through one of Andrew's documented sons, but the evidence does not identify an exact parent. Interpretations are paleographically informed but speculative.
Biography
John Glasgow was born about 1590, likely in Linlithgowshire, Scotland. This estimate is based on the 1613 baptism of his daughter, Jean Glasgow (bef.1613–) https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/sources/MG7J-6GM .

He appears in multiple parish records as the father of children baptized in the town of Linlithgow between 1613 and 1622, suggesting he resided there for at least a decade and was part of the established Glasgow family in the area.
Children
The following children are documented in the Scotland Births and Baptisms, 1564–1950 database, all born in Linlithgow, Linlithgowshire:

* Jean Glasgow – christened 17 July 1613 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X1RX-HPB

* George Glasgow – christened 20 January 1622 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X1RN-XV7
Research Notes
* The geographic setting (Linlithgowshire) and naming patterns suggest possible descent from George Glasgow (abt.1580–) or James Glasgow (abt.1540–1580), both associated with the greater Lanarkshire–Ayrshire–Lothian area.
* His son may have been James Glasgow (abt.1585–), also later found in Linlithgow.

* The surname in these records appears as Glesgow, a common early spelling variation.
Parentage and generation
Andrew Glasgow's operative 1598 testament expressly names four children—Marioune, James, Andrew, and William—but does not name John. National Records of Scotland, Edinburgh Commissary Court, testament of Andrew Glasgow, CC8/8/32; printed index: Scottish Record Society, p. 108 (https://archive.org/details/scottishrecordso01scotuoft/page/n117/mode/1up). John was alive and parenting children in Linlithgow from 1613 to 1622, so this omission conflicts with treating him as Andrew's proved direct son.

The existing links to Andrew and Jonet Anderson are retained as uncertain working parents, not as proved relationships. The Lothian geography could instead place John one generation lower or on a collateral line through one of Andrew's documented sons, but the evidence does not identify an exact parent. John Glasgow is also an unproved same-name duplicate candidate; no merge is proposed.

* Jean Glasgow – christened 17 July 1613
* John Glasgow – christened 14 September 1617
* George Glasgow – christened 20 January 1622

* Thomas Glasgow (1612–abt.1675), whose records also place him in the region, may be another child of John, though further documentation is needed.
* The surname in these records appears as Glesgow, a common early spelling variation.

Parentage and generation
Andrew Glasgow's operative 1598 testament expressly names four children—Marioune, James, Andrew, and William—but does not name John.
